What a ride! The constant feeling that the car will come off the tracks or the wooden framing will fall apart any second just adds to the experience. The ride is actually longer than I expected, taking at least three loops around the lot with several good dips and curves. The drops are much more steep than I expected. One ride is $6. The seating is tight, but that's a good thing with all the rocking and rolling going on over these rough tracks. As long as you don't expect a silky smooth ride like new roller coasters at Great Adventure or Dorney Park, you will enjoy the Cyclone! read more

They're closing down the Cyclone. We have to go get on it for the last time. Psyche! That was my childhood and teenage years, and in truth it never ended. About every year, I heard the rumor that the Cyclone was being closed. Few icons have been so persistently riddled with that vile little rumor, among them the steel Puerto Rican flags in Chicago. And for many years we would believe it and spread it further. It was entirely possible that the rumor, nay, urban legend was self-perpetuating, slowly making it's rounds across the population until it returned to you. Last time I was at the Cyclone, I told this to a visiting friend who had never been to Coney Island. Shortly, her partner received a call, and when she mentioned where she was, the caller replied: "Ya know, they're closing down the Cyclone." I was proud to have trained my companions to become roadblocks to these fugitive myths. She gently smiled and explained to the caller that it was simply a rumor repeated on an annual basis and hung up. * For the record, I think the Cyclone is reasonably smooth for a wooden coaster at its age. I've gotten whiplash and soreness before, but not on the Cyclone. Perhaps I always have the right seat, or knowing how to take this particular coaster is something I'm accustomed to, but I find it smoother than you might expect. It's very expensive, hence the lost star, but the money goes to the city and the city needs money. read more

Iconic rollercoaster in BK. For those amusement park enthusiasts, this ride is a must. Complete classic wooden rollercoaster ride. It's not a smooth ride. It's really tough on the body to take hits from the curves, drops, twist and turns. Reasonable admission. Plenty of other amusement areas nearby. We one time literally road the cyclone 25 times. I recall another time that they said they needed to fix something on the track and the repair man went with and came back only with a hammer and a screwdriver. The cyclone was the first rollercoaster I road as a kid-- and after going to practically every other amusement park in America-- it is still my favorite. The first drop hits you in your stomach like no other, and the old wood puts the speed in context, as you feel everything. I was admittely annoyed with some of the changes when it reopened: you used to be able to wait for the first seat, and you also could ride again for half price if you stayed in your seat. Also for the people complaining about how it's rough, I'm pretty sure they added extra cushioning so I'd hate to see you ride it before they did that. I remember it being way more rough then it is now. I hope they don't give way and some how make it even less bumpier-- that's the whole point of the ride. If you want a smooth comfortable ride, ride the new steel roller coasters. read more

This is an awesome coaster, and not because of that tired "it feels like it's gonna fall apart!!!!" bit that EVERYONE says thinking they are the first to say it. It's a gorgeously designed coaster...getting a long, crazy ride in a small space that NEVER lets up. There is no "downtime" on this coaster, and that's truly it's greatest achievement. The first drop is among the best of all coasters (still the best 1st drop I've ever ridden on a woodie, not counting that bastard pre-fab mutant El Toro). It's also gorgeous and a work of art. For people complaining about it being "too rough"...well, don't sit in the last seat and you'll be fine. It's really only brutal in that last seat, but everybody wants to be a badass. Sit toward the back (but not in the back) for the best of the drop action. No trim brakes, seatbelts, or seat dividers. This is the way a coaster SHOULD be, and it's one of the last in the world. It's no hyperbole to say it is a national treasure. You expect to see something like this in a museum, not out in the wild, accessable to anybody with eight bucks. It's a bargain. Ride it five times for the price to get in to Six Flags...and you are still getting the better end of that deal. read more

Each time I ride this I wake up the next morning with such neck pain. Sometimes even a bloody lip. BUT SO WELL WORTH IT!

The name is apt! I felt like I was tossed about in a cyclone. It's been two days and my neck is still sore. And I sound like a frog from all the screaming and cursing I did during the entire ride...sorry kids! Every time the coaster dropped and I lifted off the seat I thought I might die. But as bad as I make it sound, I would definitely do it again! I really love the Cyclone, it is one of the things I look forward to most about summer in Coney Island. I especially love taking friends on it that are riding the roller coaster for the first time. My favorite seat is right at the very front, I sit by myself, and let my arms flail above my head for the whole ride. Something about this coaster is just always thrilling to me. read more

3.5 stars... I don't do roller coasters, in fact I barely do rides, but I really wanted to experience this Coney Island legend and landmark, especially before they completely change Coney island in the years to come (they're not getting rid of the coaster but the Coney island area will be different I'm sure). Anyway this is a terrifying roller coaster full of nothing but drops in the nearly 2 minute ride. The seats look and seem comfortable when you first get put in and then you realize why, this old wooden coaster bumps you around so much that my girlfriends arm ended up with 5 massive black and blues afterwards. I lucked out with only 1. No matter where you "secure" your belongings whether it be wedged next to or under you, you will nearly loose them so if you can let someone on the ground hold your stuff, just not bring anything, or put it in your pants you'll be all set. I've talked to 3 or 4 people who do roller coasters and have been on the Cyclone and they all say its a scary terrifying ride that they wont be doing again (I understand some people like terrifying so this might be your cup of tea so check out this landmarked ride). The ride is $8 and if you dare ride again its $5 for re-rides. I think this is expensive for such a small ride. They guys running it know its an American icon and that people will pay this so they continue to charge for it, disappointing, especially when I read reviews from less than a year ago with people saying they paid $4, oh well. Some Facts/Trivia: -Following the sucess of a couple other roller coasters in Coney Island, the wooden Cyclone opened June 26, 1927 -The biggest drop and highest point is 85 feet. -The length of the ride is 2,650ft which takes 1 minute 50 seconds and hits speeds of 60mph and a G-force of 3.75. -Height restriction is 54 inches\ -Has been a NYC Landmark since 1988, and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991 -With exception of a couple people who eluded safety procedures and managed to stand up on the coaster the only death came in 2007 when a 53 year old man broke his back riding the Cyclone and died 4 days later from complications of his surgery. -In 1977 Richard Rodriguez set a marathon record for riding the Cyclone for 104 hours (he holds the record for the longest marathon on a coaster at 401 hours at a coaster in the UK) -Every year since 2000 the Cyclone has ranked in the top 20 (mostly in the top 15) in the Golden Ticket's list of the best wooden coasters in America read more

This is a Brooklyn classic. Although the ride doesn't last very long and it's a bit bumpy, it's still worth your money. I still find it amazing that to this day, this hunk o' junk is still standing and standing proud. Just the thought that it's wood gives it more of a thrill. The Cyclone is not big on superlatives, especially in the era of Cedar Point, Kings Island, Six Flags, etc. But it is still an amazing ride! It's old, and has some tough transitions, but man, does it deliver some good airtime! And sometimes, if a coaster like this throws you around... what do you expect? Probably one of my bigger criticisms could be the price... Once half the price not too long ago, and allowing you to stay on for extra $, the price to ride is $8 and no re-rides are allowed. you can review the cyclone? most beautiful fulfilling cheap fun i've had in nyc. i also fell in love in nyc, and that was beautiful and fulfilling. but hard. and most definitely not cheap. it took a long time, self-realization, apologizing, forgiving, growing as a person, and even a little bit of maturing. many huge moments of rush, pleasure, and make it all worth while, but still, it was a challenge. the cyclone is pure rush, pleasure and joy. ride this famous landmark and revel in the metaphors with falling in love: it is old and rickety, but has stood the test of time. you know what's going to happen, but also have no idea how it will feel. every ride feels like the first time, no matter how many times you ride. you have to be this tall to ride this ride. and you get bruises that you can show off to get sympathy and elicit strangers' stories of their rides and bruises. and, it breaks people into two simple groups - those that want to get right back on the second the ride is over, and those that burst into tears and vow "never again." read more

I have to say, I was very skeptical of this coaster when my friends and I walked up. I've been on some crazy fun coasters all over the place but I had to try this one out because it's a legend. Those newer coasters are better for the mere fact that they are more comfortable and you don't feel the need to see your local chiropractor the next day. The price is a bit steep for an old ride at Coney Island but it's pretty fun. The turns whip you around just as muchas I imagine they would 20 or 30 years ago. The option to ride again gor $5 is decent considering the fact that you have to pay $8 per ride. Overall, if you're at Coney Island for the day you should check out the aquarium, Nathan's, and the Cyclone. read more

It is steeped in history and myth, how many rollercoasters have the distinction of having as riders three generations of screaming families? One of the best ride experiences in my life!!!! It felt like I was riding on the back of a dragon!! I would recommend sitting in any seat from the middle of the train to the front. Whoa, this is the most terrifying roller coast I have ever taken! The rickety climb up, and the first drop literally lifted me out of my seat. From then on, it was one terrifying turn and drop after another. And just when you think or wish it was over, here it comes again. Yeah, I would do it again (after my neck is back to normal), but I have 2 pieces of advice: take your glasses off. My sunglasses kept smashing against my face, then flew off onto the floor. Better not to wear glasses. You also might want to stretch your neck, and do neck rolls prior. My neck literally snapped back & forth several times, thought I had whiplash. Maybe minor one, but its still sore. Aside from that, enjoy the thrill ride of your lifetime! Can't wait to go back read more

Ts Rollarcoaster is a body jaring experience, I sat in the very first car and felt like I was going to get thrown out of it going down the first drop. I took i video of my ride, I t was krazy. I'm kind of puzzled by other reviews about the jarring ride, unless this is the first wooden coaster they've ever been on. Nearly all wooden coasters are a very shaky, usually painful affair, but I must say that my recent ride (8/13/14) on the Cyclone was relatively comfortable and smooth, even with both hands in the air the whole ride. Seems like they added a lot more padding to the seats since last time I rode it 20 years ago. It was a squeeze to get my 6'2" frame into, but very snug and cozy once seated. Great drops and turns, flexing structure, and the questionably maintenance (I saw a bolt roll out of the car as we exited!) add greatly to the thrill of riding this 90+ year old piece of history, which is still in the same league as new steel coasters in my opinion. The loading area did have a nice fresh coat of paint. All told, worth the trip and the $9 ticket price :) Tips: - Of course, as with all wooden coasters, the last car gives the scariest/best ride. - 54" minimum height to ride. - Typical coaster scream photo available for view/purchase at the exit. read more

The cyclone was a disappointment because the 5 or 6 drops there are were spoiled because the ride itself is so very violent. It's like driving over a pothole riden street at about 30 miles per hour downhill. It's the coaster's fault (the actual train itself -not the track), if they were to put a modern coaster on that same track it would be smooth. I know that many like the way it is, more power to ya, I was checking to see if I had all my teeth when I got off that thing. Well after all it is in Brooklyn...
