I hate heights. I was born in Coney Island hospital, only a few miles from the coaster, and had never ridden. Until Early this last summer. Again, I hate heights. I was terrified the whole time, the whole roller coaster looked like it was going to splinter and break at any moment, I felt like I was going to slide out of my seat and the staff RUSHED ME INTO THE SEAT. I needed just 2 seconds to talk myself into going and they just rushed me in. Was not happy, NEVER GOING AGAIN. I hate heights. I love this roller coaster and visit Coney Island once every summer just to ride it . It's older than your great grandma which adds to the thrill . You get a nice view while climbing up . there is only one other coaster that fills me with such unbridled joy and that is rolling thunder at great adventure in jackson, nj. it is also a wooden, dilapidated-seeming clattering vaguely-terrifying ride, but the cyclone even out paces this other coaster for sheer awesomeness. i still get a lump in my throat as the coaster begins its rickety ascent and i still get whipped around and my head still throbs afterwards, but this is the best ride in all of america. i love the cyclone. i'm one of the crazies who will ride it 3-5 times in a row and one of the reasons i want to procreate is so that i can drag my kids on this beast. amazing! read more

read the other reviews. serious. this ride looks like a rickety old piece of junk from the outside. ha. yuk it up before you shell out the measly $6 to get on this badboy. my brother and I - who are seasoned rollercoaster riders mind you - stroll onto this thing thinking, "Man, this thing is gonna be cake." wrong again. this ride is pretty sick. its not super fast, its no marvel of technology, just and old, squeaky, FAST roller coaster. the drops are steep, the seats are uncomfortable and the ride is long! probably one of the longest coasters I've ever been on! in any case, this ride gets an A- from this kid. sweet. will be back on soon! read more

I have been riding the cyclone for over 20 years and it is as awesome a coaster as ever. However, it was recently taken over by the nice folks at Luna Park (the kiddie park across the street) and much of the charm has been taken away. After paying the 8$ and getting a Luna Park card to scan at the gate, we were told that we could not wait for the first car (there was no one waiting on the entire platform) and that we had to board the almost full car that was waiting at the station. I simply refused to board and we waited anyway, but I found that new policy to be absurd. Further more, once we boarded we had to wait almost 10 minutes for the car to fill up. I don't know why this was the case, but it was quite anticlimactic. The employees used to be a ragtag bunch of locals and now have been replaced by minimum wage fresh-mouths with uniform polo shirts. The "ride again for 5$" option has been removed all together and one must get off, leave and get on the line again to re board. The picture booth was out of order and the woman there was N A S T Y about it. I stand by the coaster...it's one of the best, but Cyclone has lost a lot of it's cool since the Luna Park takeover. read more

Oldie but definitely a goodie! Rode this back in 2010 when I was a tiny teeny bopper and this was honestly my first "real" roller coaster. After this I felt like I could conquer any roller coaster and I was right! The cyclone is the distant cousin of El Toro at six flags but much older and much more dangerous (but that adds to the fun!) My favorite part was when we climbed the first hill and the first drop is THE BEST. Although my hair was flying and whipping in my face, I got banged around and got a few battle scars but nonetheless it was a great experience!! I went back today to ride the cyclone and the price is $9 now, the prices go up each year so ride the cyclone ASAP. Anyways, it was still the same and if anything even crazier because it's older now! I recommend ladies to tie their hair up securely! Also make sure not to put your hands up when you're close to one of those supporting wooden beams because you can get hurt ! But yeah, for anyone whose a roller coaster virgin the Cyclone would be a great Cherry popper! read more

Riding the Cyclone was on my bucket list. I felt like I'd either be able to check it off, or it would be the last thing I ever did on my bucket list...lol It was awesome! As someone else said, it wasn't "a rollercoaster", it's "THE rollercoaster". When we'd go to Coney Island as kids, I wasn't allowed to ride it because I was too little, but my brothers all went on. I'm 57 now, and I figured it was time! I have to admit that my eyes stayed shut right after the first drop, and I thought it would never end, but guess that's why it's called, "The Cyclone"! I talked to an older gentleman on the boardwalk who grew up there and rode it three times a day years and years ago, for 25 cents a ride! It's an icon! Just do it! The only way I can describe how I feel today after riding the Cyclone for the first time last night is like being in a car crash. I hurt from head to toe. Maybe because I was in the last car, I'm not sure but this ride scared the crap out of me. It's terrifying. I had my eyes closed the entire time after the first drop and held onto the safety bar for dear life. I actually hated this ride but I'm glad I did. One time is enough for me. read more

It's not for everyone. I don't mind the "thrills" of a rollercoaster, but at least the new ones hold your neck still. I suffered really bad whiplash (sat midway back), and was in pain for days. Felt like I had walked away from a bad car accident. I'm 5 feet tall and "just" made the height cutoff, but I'm wondering if they should have a weight minimum that might be safer. I'd hate to think of a kid on that thing getting thrown about. Yes, I totally felt like I could slip through the barrier bar, and I had to fight to keep myself in the seat the whole time. Even my husband, whose favorite ride is Kinda Ka, thought this one was a bit too "rough" to be enjoyed. read more

WOW! This coaster is definetly worth the 50 minute subway ride to Coney Island. It opens at noon. It is bumpy and super speedy, which adds to the thrill. Best coaster on Coney Island!!! read more

Being from Pittsburgh, I'm forced to say that Kennywood's Thunderbolt is a better coaster, and my personal favorite. Let me start with saying that I go to Coney Island all the time. I am 32 years old and never had any issues - ever! I regretfully have decided to send this email. I went to CI yesterday and wanted to get on the cyclone. I bought 4 tickets and wanted to get in the front 2 rows. I understand there is no waiting for these seats, but it wasn't an issue since there were hardly any people there -it was around 9pm. There was a man who also waited for the front row and so we waited for him to get on and were going to get on next. The staff started yelling at us and saying there is no waiting and we weren't going to get on. I was with 3 guys and was surprised that the staff was being rude to me - a female - when I was explaining that there was no one waiting and that they should have better customer service skills especially when we bought 4 tickets at $9 each. They got the supervisor who only made matters worse when the ride came into the station and he didn't open the first 2 rows so that we couldn't get on. I was very upset and had them call the manager. Douglas Youla was very polite and said we would get our money back - but that wasn't the point. The point I explained was the poor customer service and the 3 staff members attitude which was very offensive and made us feel like we were being discriminated against. Let me say again that there was hardly anyone there - and the people who got on the ride were saying it was ridiculous they weren't letting us on. We all live in Brooklyn and go to CI all the time. One of us even lives in the neighborhood. I am extremely upsest and wanted Luna Park management to know about this offensive discrimination incident. I am a manager and we take customer service very serious and always try to please our clients. We will not be riding the cyclone or recommending it to others until the staffing issue is changed. Discrimination is against the law and should be taken seriously. However, I am a fan of the Cyclone RIDE!!!! :) read more

I love the Cyclone but that's probably because I'm from Brooklyn. It's not really scary comparing to Hershey Park or Six Flags so sitting in the front seats is the way to go. However, the fact that its shaky, even got stuck a couple of times, and it incredibly old might be something to thik about before you buy that ticket! read more

Its good. But it is not worth the $8. i mean the ride is way too short to be worth $8. its a fun ride though. it goes as fast as the nitro and the coaster goes at crippling speed. savor every moment of this ride. its short but very enjoyable. definitely give it a shot. and yeah, each reride is $5 read more

Despite the exciment and the adrenaline, I experienced the most terrifying moment ever. On 7/4/11, I was with my friend making a line to get in, when sudenly some screws and knobs felt from above while the cars were in movement!! People got scared, some pick up the knobs and gave it to the supervisor. He told us not to worry that it was "normal." When we got it, the cars moved with such power and out of control that my friend's neck got injured. My lower back, my neck and my chest were in such pain that I had to go to the hospital. 24 hours after, I still in pain and a diziness feeling is over me. I WILL NEVER re-visit this machine. I went on cyclone yesterday for my bday happy 25 and I loved it...haven't been on it since my teen yrs and I forgot how rough that ride was...and I've been to many rollercoaster rides including sixflags but this is the only ride that scares me and I woke up this morning feeling soar but worth it lol read more

This ride is a classic. The best roller coaster I've ever been on. A staple of new york. It's not how I remember it though, going on it as a kid in the late 90's. It used to be better. There are no more re-rides. I remember re-riding as much as 8 times, switching from the first car to the very scary and exhilarating back car. Was awesome. They also take your picture, which you can purchase as you leave, if you want. Mayor bloomerberg ruined this shit. It used to be fun going to coney island, not knowing if you would get out alive. He wants to turn the city into disneyland. So, I give this ride 4 stars instead of 5, which it would have got if it was left the way it used to be. read more

Coney Island is one of my most favorite places in the world. I've been coming here since I was a toddler and have so much memories here. The park has changed a lot now, they tore down 2 of the 3 parks that existed and left The Cyclone still up which is great. I remember getting on the Cyclone when I was bout 7 (I passed through as I looked old enough to ride at the time, also back then it didn't really matter unless you looked like a 4 year old) and it was the first roller coaster I ever got on. This roller coaster is the reason why I love roller coasters, it introduced me to the thrill of riding coasters. I remember when I got on it I was scared as ever I have the picture to prove it haha. Now the parks there are called Luna Park which personally, i don't think looks great now. The beach is nothing special but a lot more activity goes on here(sometimes you'll find small crabs in the sand or clams) a lot of different people come here which makes the environment more exciting because there's all types of different people here. I wonder if the boa holding person still goes to the beach in the summer. Overall it's a New York staple. read more
