I happened to come across a Juneteenth performance at this theatre and decided to check it out. The theatre itself is cozy and approachable. It is located in a small plaza with plenty of parking space in the lot. I really enjoyed the performance and because of the layout of the space, you could easily see no matter where you are. One downside about this is that the only way in and out of the theatre is through one main door and if you're sitting on the further side from the entrance, if you need to get up to go to the bathroom or whatsoever, you'd have to walk in front of everybody, right in front of the stage, go across in order to get to the door, exit and find the bathroom. It's kind of awkward. So, make sure you do what you need to do if the performance has no breaks! read more

This is an intimate theatre! Stadium style seating that isn't too cramped. Cute little lobby and two restrooms down the hall. All of the staff and volunteers were absolutely lovely! It's in a strip mall so pretty good amount of parking. At our show the sound system seemed to be having some issues but nothing too bad, although it's overall a little quiet! I think the show, especially the one we saw, could've benefited from a little more volume hehe. Overall good venue! :) read more

Great space, great show! I have been quite a few times, and Ive loved almost everything Ive seen! My favorites have been The Pleasure Trials, The Chronicles of Kalki, Man & Moon. Note for Plus sized folks, The theatre seats were a bit small and uncomfortable for my plus sized self, but turns put they have a few bigger seats that they were able to accommodate me in! So if you're a wider hipped plus size person, just ask for a larger seat when getting tickets! (Or look around the theatre, the larger seats have a pink sticker on them!) I love this theatre otherwise, and so many great shows! read more

went to the Moxie for the first time, to see #EverydayVanilla. Great show though I understand that it is not the Moxy putting it on. The venue was great and they were excellent hosts. Hard to find good small theater in San Diego these days. I am handicapped and they provided a couple of nice spots. again, this is difficult and small Theaters but they made every effort to accommodate. One recommendation, and the reason that this does not get five stars, the first row of seats (theater style) were not bolted to the floor, and when my daughter stood up, the chair moved was unexpected. It would be great if they were secured better. Do go! read more

MOXIE is the sweetest little homegrown theater hiding in a strip mall in Rolando. I came for BROOKLYN The Musical, and ticket prices were a steal. There's no bad seat in the house, voices & acting were top notch, plus the powerful live orchestration really killed. Parking is quick, free, and easy. The staff creates a warm & welcoming vibe too - it feels like the whole place is one big family, and that helps shape a lively & engaged audience. I love that MOXIE primarily produces shows by female playwrights and showcase pieces defying female stereotypes. We need more of that. Season ticket holders get some good little perks, so I'll be subscribing to their 2017-2018 shows. read more

This is my first time at this theater. I can't believe it's been around for 15 years and I've never been here. It's a great set up and every seat has a great view of the stage. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Parking is easy to find. The play tonight is fantastic. All the actors are really good. It is a very funny play. My favorite actor is a young lady by the name of Tamara Rodriquez. She is incredible. read more

I passed this place three times before I finally found it tucked away in what looked like a neighborhood strip mall. Dang navigation kept telling me it was 500 ft on the right, but I didn't see a theatre. Guess I was expecting to see a building similar in structure to the Orange County Performing Arts Center where I've attended for countless theatre performances. Well, this is definitely far from that. It's a small quaint theatre; only big enough to handle a handful of people. I was rather impressed with my overall experience. They could've opted for better theatre food then Skittles, but I'll give Moxie a pass given that there was no intermission and I wasn't there for the concessions. I saw Toni Morrison's "Bluest Eye" and it was very good. It was 90 minutes of pure captivation. I will definitely return for another theatre production. read more

One of the cutest little theater I've been to. Even though it's in the middle of no where, driving down the long and windy road (I-8) was definitely worth it. What I love about Moxie is that they're a "non-profit theatre, founded to create more diverse and honest images of women by promoting primarily female playwrights." This is an intimate little theater that seats fewer than 100 patrons. (my guess) But the drama ("The Madres") that I saw there recently was an exceptionally fine piece of theater. I'm told that this theater specializes in productions that showcase women in powerful roles. It wasn't the reason I came; I was familiar with the storyline- based on true events- and I wanted to see how it was dramatized. But it's good to know that we are fortunate to have a theater in San Diego that has a mission to empower women. This performance surely did! In addition, the seats were comfortable. Very reasonably-priced beverages (wine and soft drinks) were sold in the lobby and could be brought into the theater. In the future, I don't want to miss any play that Moxie presents. read more

I'm glad I looked this place up on google maps before I headed over, otherwise I might've driven right by the strip mall where this theatre is located. Crumbs From The Table of Joy is the play that drew me to the theatre last week. I was quite impressed by the quality of acting, especially considering the youth of some of the actors. The theatre was intimate, but without assigned seating, so arriving early might be a good idea. The refreshment stand was small, but very affordable. Overall, I would recommend this theatre if they have a show in which you are interested. read more

Just saw "Drink Me or The Case of Alice Times Three" with the Moxie Theater Company...they are in residency with the La Jolla Playhouse now and will be moving to the Rolando Theater near SDSU for their next show. Anyhow, logistics aside, I enjoyed the play very much. It was an intimate setting at The Forum Studio Theater on the UCSD campus. The 7 actors did a great job! The play content was unexpected and it was funny, quirky, and oddly sensual...all at the same time. I enjoyed the minimalist, but effective use of color and props. The 3 witches in the play were PERFECT! The detective was sure and steady...on the mark! All the supporting actors also did a great job of weaving together a splendidly thought-provoking tale. A+! While the $25 Sunday matinee is more than I'd care to spend on a movie, say...it was money well spent on live theater, for sure. The $15 Thursday night show would have been a bit of a money saver, but...I couldn't be sure I'd stay awake that late...seeing as I teach Kindergarten during the day...I need all the beauty sleep I can get, so I'm beautiful for my students each morning. Oh, one more thing....they do have a season pass, of sorts. There are a few different prices, depending on the type of show you want to catch (Opening night, versus non-opening nights, etc.) Those run about $125ish to $90 per person...for 6 shows, a good deal! read more

Went here last night to see Candye Kane do her musical life story in the 'Toughest Girl Alive.' She is one of my fave local blues performers. This girl has been through the ringer in life and presented it in fine form here at this not so small theater. But Candye, you're a champion of big girls, plus size girls and guys, you preach love your bodies, and size acceptance. But have you ever sat in one of these seats at this women run theater?? I have lost a bit of weight the last couple of weeks, and if I had those lbs back on, I would not have fit in these seats! Wait, I STILL didn't fit in these seats! It was terribly uncomfortable and I won't be back until I lose some more! I truly want to support this place and I understand they are trying to fit in as many seats as possible (about 160) but c'mon. It's run by women. Women are absolutely more obsessed with their bodies then men are, so I find it hard to believe they they don't have some seats for the big bootays. They lost a star for that and for that only. read more

As well as having a wonderful mission, Moxie Theatre is also intimate, cozy, and easy to find. I am endorsing this theatre company because the work that is being done here is like no other. San Diego has an enormous performing arts activity. Local not touring. And People do not seem to know. First time to this theater. I was very impressed, reminds me of the old Bowery Theater in San Diego that was known for excellence in an intimate setting. Parking was easy. Getting tickets was easy. They have a small refreshment area with the usual stuff and some good cookies. The play we saw was Ten Cent Night and it was very well done. Specially the performances all around. Great set. And the story is a bit of a ride with some bits of excellent writing that I did not expect. Nicely done. I will be back to the Moxie. I am happy to have found it. read more

I drive all the way from Vista, passing the moonlight theatre on the way. I like theater to be thought provoking, engaging and intimate. The Women who started this group have a great vision and primarily produce women playwrights. This doesn't mean that they leave men out, in fact they have embraced some of San Diego's best Actors, like Mark Christopher Lawrence who just won Best Actor of the year! Mark was in "A Raisin in the Sun", which is the only play I haven't seen! Dang! Moxie, please bring it back! Going to see "The Bluest Eye" this Thursday, can't wait! I stumbled upon The Moxie years ago tucked away in a small shopping center. Unbelievable to walk inside and be "taken away" with each wonderfully thoughtful production. I have lost count of the number of plays that I have seen. A small, intimate theatre with the stage practically sitting in my lap. I love being so up close with the stage design, lighting, music, and cast. Not only are plays entertaining but they are educational. At the end, I leave having learned something more about life. read more

'Yoga Play' was fun. Theater is good. Parking lot is terrible! Park on the street or avoid this venue. Another patron and I received thousands in damage from a hit & run driver. As if that was upsetting enough, it took Moxie a week to respond to our call asking if they had a surveillance camera! No, they don't. read more

Wow, every single play I've seen at Moxie this year has been fantastic. It may be a little out of the way, but the theater is simple to get to, the parking is free and it's a great little theater space - not to mention the price of tickets are really affordable, especially for the quality of acting. What continues to impress me is the choice of plays (always thought provoking and poignant), the directing, the level of acting and the set design. I just saw Jade Heart, and it was incredibly good - once again! I now bring a different friend each time to introduce more people to this hidden gem. read more
