Cute spacious Mexican cantina in Old Town San Diego. Outdoor and indoor seating in themed rooms. Very cute decor. Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us. Complimentary chips and salsa are brought to the table. I had the tortilla soup and a cheese enchilada. The soup was very good, albeit slightly heavy broth, but a great smoky chile flavor. The enchilada was a little salty but again the red sauce had a great flavor. Everyone else enjoyed everything they ordered, and most of the items come with freshly made flour tortillas.

I've always loved this place! The food is great! Service is EXCELLENT! Ambiance is always on point! Usually when we come here we see Myra, but I had a lot of time to kill today since we just left the Chula Vista Police Department, the ceremony and beginning of the LETR. We met Ash our server! And this gal was so awesome!! There's not enough words to say how thankful I am that Lulu and I met Ash! I want to give a big shout out and thank you Cafe Coyote for Ash, Myra and your amazing team! Best customer service ever! Thank you Ash and we look forward to seeing you again! JJ & Lulu PS a few of the new pictures are from the event this morning. Thank you again!

If you are looking for the quintessential Old Town experience, Cafe Coyote certainly looks the part. The chips and salsa are a solid start, and the menu is expansive. The Birria: Visually, the birria was impressive--rich, fatty, and deeply colored. It tasted as good as it looked, which makes the subsequent "delivery fail" even more disappointing. El Rey and Pollo a la Crema: The portions are massive, and the food arrived hot and well-seasoned. Was cooked perfectly and paired with their delicious handmade tortillas. Drinks: The Horchata was creamy and served in a huge glass, which was much needed to wash down the meal. The Service: A Literal Hot Mess While the kitchen was firing on all cylinders, the front-of-house was a total wreck. Our server seemed more interested in "performing" than actually serving. The Incident: Our server was literally spinning around with a bowl of Birria soup like they were on a dance floor. Unsurprisingly, the laws of physics won. I ended up wearing a significant portion of the soup. While mistakes happen in a busy restaurant, the lack of spatial awareness and the "showmanship" at the expense of the guest's safety (and wardrobe) was completely unacceptable. It's hard to enjoy a "good meal" when you're damp with beef consommé. The real issue?: The Server: No immediate attempt to fix the mess or call a manager. The "Help": I had to flag down a different server to complain. The Management: Absolute silence. No manager came to the table, no apology was offered, and the meal certainly wasn't comped. Bottom Line: Go for the handmade tortillas and the birria, but maybe wear a poncho or sit far away from the "spinning" servers. The food is 4-star quality, but the service was a 0-star disaster.

Okay guys it's definitely really touristy but sometimes that is what's FUN! We love taking people who come from out of town to walk around Old Town and this is just a great stop with a great vibe. The food may be not as typically authentic as other places in the same area but you get great photos, the bathrooms are easily accessible, and the food and drink is pretty good, and the vibe is just fun with music and ambiance! In terms of what to get, I especially LOVE the carnitas here and could eat them all day. They're super good. I also feel that even when this place is busy it's still pretty easy to get a spot and the service is fast and efficient. This last time we came we had such a sweet waiter named Lucy/Lucia who was so on the ball with us, even though it was a busy Saturday!! It made our experience so positive and I would come back in a heartbeat just to get served by her. We always have fun here and I love taking others here as well!

Is in an excellent location right in the heart of Old Town, and the restaurant itself is massive. They even have a roped-off area for guests waiting to be seated, which gives you an idea of how busy the place can get. Surprisingly, we walked right up and were seated immediately, which was awesome considering we visited on a Saturday afternoon with perfect weather outside. One of the coolest parts was seeing the ladies outside making homemade tortillas right in front of everyone. You can even watch them from the street, which really adds to the experience and atmosphere. The service was great from start to finish. The food came out quickly, tasted delicious, and even the check came out fast. Honestly, they did a really impressive job considering how large the restaurant is and how many people were dining there at the time. Definitely a spot worth stopping at if you're visiting Old Town San Diego.

Cafe Coyote surprised me in the best way. I was a little skeptical at first, but the food ended up being really good. Located in Old Town San Diego, the restaurant has that classic traditional Mexican ambiance that really gives it a south of the border feel. Pricing was about what you'd expect - around $60 for two people including soft drinks. I had the El Rey plate with carne asada, green enchilada, and carnitas, while my lady had the veggie fajitas plate. Both meals came with beans and rice, portions were solid, and everything tasted fresh. The chips and salsa were a great start too :) Overall, really enjoyable experience and I'd definitely come back again!

My wife and I visited during Spring Break. It was pretty busy and the wait to be seated was about 10 mins. The ambience is kind of loud. The place itself is pretty big and they can accommodate large parties, although that may make the wait longer. The menu was pretty typical in what you'd see in a Mexican restaurant. They do make all their tortillas from scratch and you are able to see that being done at multiple stations throughout the restaurant. The food presentation was great. Where it was just lacking for me was on the flavor.

Food was great! Ana's customer service was amazing! Returning customer, coming from Los Angeles. Will Definitely return soon.

I've been here twice now and I can say the taste of the food stays consistent. Fresh handmade tortillas and delicious drinks. It gets really packed here and it's more of a fiesta vibe with mariachi walking around. It has an outdoor/ indoor setting so I could say the places appears pretty clean and is great for larger groups of people. Our server was Alicia and she was patient and on top of her game with our party of 8. I have only ordered the chicken chipotle flautas and I love them. Tonight I tried a house margarita and it didn't disappoint.. if ever in San Diego old town it is a must stop.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants, anywhere. If you're in the SD area old town is worth checking out for breakfast and a stroll through the shops. The vibe is incredible given its old town energy. There's even a park down the street to sit at and enjoy a sunny SD day. The staff are also SUPER nice despite the busyness of the shift they're on. In house made tortillas are a MUST!

I loved everything about this place. I am already planning another visit when I am in San Diego this summer. Guess what? They take reservations! From what I could tell, the majority of the place is covered so even if you sit outside and it rains (just in case), you are covered. Again, most of the area. My hotel gave me a free appetizer of the restaurant's choice. Honestly, mine was just beans, which were great for dipping the tortilla chips. If you are staying in a hotel, check with them to see if they do the same. I had the margarita tray and I probably liked 4 of the 6 drinks. Yum! Honestly, and this is so silly, becasue we were going on a walking tour, i knew that I was not going to go back to the hotel so I just ordered (don't judge), flower tortillas (made fresh) frijoles. I felt that I was a little kid in the kitchen with my dad. That is all I needed. Seriously! The beans were that good that I didn't need anything else. The tortillas, also. Mariachis played for us and, again, it was as if my dad was there with us. Great time. Okay, moving on from my sappy stuff to something also important... The restrooms are a bit of a walk and are upstairs. If you cannot climb stairs, there is an elevator. Hopefully you will enjoy this place as much as I did! ........ ...... .. .....

This in no part is not towards our server Ricky. If it was just based on service alone it would've easily been a 10. On a busy day like today, the service was all around amazing and Ricky was a great guy. But the food itself was just too bad not to give a review. Honestly the food I get at my local taco shops, yes even Lolita's, was much better quality and taste wise and cheaper for that matter. We came here today to do Cinco De Mayo and taco Tuesday. Our go to place across the street was closed down (Fred's) and I'm so bummed because we enjoyed their specials and the food was consistently good. Here however, not so much. My hubs got the tequila sunrise, one of the drink specials for cinco de Mayo. It was absolutely delicious. My drink on the other hand was horrible. I got the the spicy cucumber and it tasted like the glass it was served in was washed in lard and prepared in lard. The consistency was as a margarita should be, but that lard taste was so off putting that I had to pass it on to my husband and he couldn't even finish it. The chile relleno, oh boy. It was soooooooo soggy and the batter was horrible. I got a taco trio, carne asada, fish and hard shell taco. The only good taco out of the 3 was fish taco. The carne asada was so dry yet soggy, is that even a thing?! And the tortilla was not fresh. It was gritty, cold and heavy. The crunchy chicken taco was so bland, no seasoning no nothing. Just dry and soggy which seemed to be a theme. Honestly when you have good taco shops around you it's so disheartening to know that a place commercially for tourists serves this quality of food because that would the first impression tourists would get of Mexican food and San Diego is the heart of excellent delicious Mexican food, especially the hole in the wall places. For those trying Mexican food for the first time, pls don't let this be your first experience. There are so many great places around that don't cost as much and have better quality food.

    Do you have lobster today?

Yes we do!! Best in town!

    Are dogs allowed?

Yes! We are dog friendly in our outdoor areas. We also have a dog menu 🐕

I'm planning a party for 50 people, you guys have place for this cane of party?

Yes they even offer separated rooms if needed

Planning to go for lunch but two people in our group use walkers and find it difficult to walk from the car into the restaurant. Is there close parking with handicap signs near the restaurant or valet parking available?

They have a free parking garage under the restaurant, as well as a few free spots on the right side of the restaurant. No valet but I'm sure you could pull up front and drop off with the hazards lights. Super friendly staff! Great food

Do they charge a service charge on top of the bill?

I still have my receipt from two weeks ago and it doesn't show a service charge. Just the tax. At the bottom it does indicate that 20% gratuity will be added to parties of 8 or more.

Are dogs allowed on the patio?

No they are not. I have asked.

    When is happy hour?

It's an extremely touristy restaurant in a very touristy area. The bar may have special prices on certain drinks, but it's just a place to take money from tourists.

What Vegetarian options do you have that don't contain lard or chicken broth in the beans, rice or tortillas?

This is a Mexican restaurant. What you're looking for is a vegan restaurant.

I see conflicting comments in the reviews. Can you buy the fresh tortillas by the dozen?

    Sure can

Do they have Mariachis every night?

    Yes

    Do they have Apple Pay?

    Yes!

They do take Reservations, but sometimes it is hard getting through to them by calling. if you have under 6 people you can make reservations on their website.

What time do the Mariachis play on Sundays?

I generally go there on Saturdays or Sundays around brunch time ...the mariachis are there ...they are walking from table to table ...asking for permission to serenade you... And make your visit very special

Do they still have live mariachi bands there during covid time?

Yes they do and they still do pictures table side

    Are you animal friendly?

    No pets, unless service animals

    Do u serve wet burritos?

Yes. They can make your burrito wet! Enjoy

What forms of payment do the street side tortillas take?

    Cash

Can you seat a table of 30? Thank you!

    Yes

Hi I never been here and trying to book a large group for girls' weekend. Is there good shops around this area and things to see? This is for a twenty something crowd. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you

Yes there is the old hard rock which is now called zozo. There is a club their and like a pool party vibe at this hotel. However when covid19 was going on it was more of a chill relax vibe. Their is a drag show spot restaurant near by and a club… Read more

    What vegan options are available?

None. You'll have to take ingredients off something in order to make it vegan. I recommend going somewhere else honestly.

Located in Old Town San Diego, we had dinner at a restaurant within walking distance from Oculto. I parked for free on the street and made a reservation day of. It's a pretty small speakeasy so if you're going on a weekend, you're probably going to have to make a reservation in advance. Ambiance (4.5/5): Oculto has the seven deadly sins theme going which is pretty cool. I've been to a similar speakeasy in St. Pete, Florida. Once you arrive at the mezcal bar that houses Oculto, check in with the host, and he will bring you to a "confessional." There, you must confess one of the seven deadly sins before the door to the speakeasy is opened for you. Naturally, I went with "lust." Once you get inside, it's a charming speakeasy. Service (2.5/5): This is one of the areas that leaves a little to be desired. There was only one bartender working when I was there. Since speakeasies have elevated cocktails, service was quite slow. They definitely needed two bartenders there to speed up the process. They also have a two-drink minimum which I was annoyed about on principle. I often have multiple drinks at a bar, but I never feel like I'm forced to do it. Food (N/A): I'm not sure if they have food, I don't believe they do. Regardless, I was on a liquid diet. Drinks (4/5): Pretty interesting menu of craft cocktails. When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for unique drinks that have an interesting combination of ingredients and flavor profiles. In addition to a nice list, they also have a dealer's choice cocktail where you can tell the bartender what you're into and they will craft a custom cocktail for you based on your taste. Another cool thing about Oculto is that it's located next to the cemetery in Old Town. That adds to the spooky theme.

I had sort of been to Monkeybar several years back when I used Resort Pass to spend a day lounging by the pool. At that time, I had walked up to the bar several times for mimosas, but mainly spent time at the pool rather than in the bar. This time, it was a chilly January evening and we walked in to find that there was a convention at the hotel, so it was pretty packed. The decor was modern, but the bar itself was really just a hotel lobby bar. I was hoping it would have a bit more character. There was a DJ playing, which was cool, but it also was pretty loud making it difficult to catch up with my friend. We struggled as the indoor area was loud and the outdoor area was really cold. The couple of outdoor tables that had fire pits were already taken by convention-goers. Finally, we chose to sit on the outside area of the bar, which was still chilly, but was quiet enough so that we could chat. Anyway, I was a bit hungry, and had been hoping for a salad, but there were none on the menu. We chose to share the edamame hummus. They did have some decent sounding cocktails on the menu, but we were in the mood for wine. We both chose glasses of Malbec. The Malbec was decent, so I had a second glass. Our bartender was friendly, but out hummus was forgotten. After I asked, he expedited our order. I enjoyed the hummus and the variety of veggies. As it got colder, we moved inside when the DJ ended. Parking is free with validation, however mine did not get validated correctly by the bartender. I explained to the parking attendant and he let me go. All in all, it was a decent place to talk with a friend over a glass of wine. I think it would be a nice bar if I were staying in the hotel, but not special enough to make the trip. I do think the atmosphere might be much more lovely on a summer weekend, as sitting outside by the pool would be very nice.

They also offer a great happy hour special Tuesday through Friday with $5 off pizzas. I don't remember the exact hours, so you'll want to check those before visiting. One of the things I love most about this place is the variety. There are three different brewery stations throughout the venue. I got a flight from the back room, where they serve mead, which is tough to find around San Diego. I ordered a flight, which came with six selections, and every single one was excellent. The staff here are fantastic. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and one of the chefs even came out to give the pups some pepperoni, which was a nice touch that definitely stood out. The space itself is huge with plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a great place for groups to gather, relax, and enjoy a few drinks without feeling cramped. Overall, this is a fun and unique spot with great food, excellent drinks, and outstanding service. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back.

The main food available is from Pizza Cassette, which has delicious sandwiches and wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza pies. Drinks are available from a brewery, a trendy and unique wine spot, and a meadery! Truly something for everyone. It's dog friendly and great for groups to still feel intimate with standing areas, barrel table tops and picnic style tables. There's usually always something happening like trivia night or live music, but heads up, they don't stay open too late - won't be an issue for most, but in case you're looking for a spot at 8pm, double check the hours, especially for food.

Other San Diego wine clubs focus on things like Spanish and French wines, fancy bubbly wines, Santa Barbara or Santa Rita.... This is truly San Diego. Oddish also has some of the craziest wines I've ever seen. For example, they had one called the hybrid that mixed wine, Mead, and cider. If you're looking to have fun and try a wine that is not full of itself but instead full of character, this is what you want. Also, I have a lot of friends who say that drinking wine makes them feel sick and that they never feel sick when they drink Oddish wines. Must be the way that they produce it and just how natural it really is. It's inside of a space called The Garten which is also such a must-see spot. They have Mead, beer, and a pizza truck? Pizza, outdoor oven type thing haha. And a stage that sometimes has live music. You order your drinks, sit on picnic tables with others, and enjoy the beautiful San Diego Sunshine
