These are definitely my favorite Montreal bagels…read more As a NYC native, I think I am qualified to judge bagels. NYC bagels are definitely the best but these bagels are right up there as well. The biggest difference has to be the hint of sweet that comes from the honey. I did really like that hint of sweetness in my bagel. I was especially enamored with the poppy ones, the aroma and flavor of those were really punchy. The onion and garlic were also very aromatic. I also enjoyed these bagels as the natives do, ripping and dunking them in the cream cheese. The Tre Selle containers of cream cheese were lighter and less dense than the Philadelphia cream cheese I normally get with my bagels. Supposedly it's not a dense because it has less preservatives. I tried the bagel crisps and other items but the bagels are definitely the draw. I ended up grabbing a dozen for my trip back to the states. Fairmount doesn't have as many locations as the main competitor in the area and these is no where to eat in. This is strictly a grab your bagels to go, the ambiance is compact once inside.

The sesame bagels here are slightly sweet on the outside with a rich, umami roasted sesame flavor from the seeds and wood firing. I recommend buying a tub of cream cheese or whatever other supplies you'd like from the cooler to make your own sandwich or to dip your bagel. Of course, they're great on their own, but a little chive cream cheese really brings it to the next level. I always stock up during each trip to Montreal and bring some to friends and family back home and everyone always looks forward to that!

Well, I had to find out for myself. The two bagels are very different. I may sound bias but the New York bagel is definitely better. That's not to say I didn't like the Montreal bagel, they're just not the same. The Montreal bagel tastes almost denser. We had the spicy everything bagel which is a first for me and a sesame bagel. Again, good. But I come from the home of bagels so it wasn't anything for me to write home about.

Bagel Fréna is a relaxed neighborhood spot specializing in these Israeli and Moroccan delights, resulting from its extremely friendly owner's cultural background. A corner location, its front windows were fully open allowing a light breeze to complement the warm, late summer air. The music fit the chill vibe. Jerusalem Bagels (a.k.a. Ka'ak or Simit) are flat, oval bagels coated in sesame. Mine had also green olives, perfect with Za'atar Hummus. To drink, I enjoyed their sweet Moroccan Tea made with fresh mint leaves, which reminded me of my time years back in Marrakech and Fez. On my next visit to Bagel Fréna in addition to another cup of that fantastic Moroccan Tea, I decided to try their Jerusalem Pita, also coated with sesame. This time, I filled the warm bread with Olive Cream Cheese and Moroccan Roasted Red Peppers. All flavorful and sensational! I ended up going there for a bagel for 2 times on 3 days in Montreal. This can be my proof on how great their Le New Yorker bagel. In addition, I bought the salmon cream cheese from the store. Went home today and try it, full of salmon flavor, and it won't override the cream cheese. Definitely worth the price!
