St-Viateur Bagel is a must visit when in Montréal. Not your average New York bagel for sure! It's light, dense, flavorful and filling. I got it with strawberry cream cheese which is unlike me because I don't like cream cheese. But I tried it because hey, I was in Montréal. This cream did not taste like cream cheese! I actually liked it, and will get it again!
Excellent ovenbaked Canadian bagels with super smooth service. Tasty and not expensive at all.
These bagels get a huge build-up but really...meh. They are ok. I don't know, I just expected better and they are nothing special. Lots of better bagel shops around Detroit. Asked for a salt bagel and got a rosemary bagel which supposedly had salt in it. What? A proper salt bagel has a ton of kosher salt on it. Service was randon, the place is stark. If you go, just don't expect much. There is a line outside--WHY?

We had a rosemary bagel and everything bagel which we both loved. It's a fun atmosphere with people excited to grab bagels and go.

Like other native New Yorkers, I have strong opinions on bagels so I was intrigued to see how these stacked up. St-Viateur Bagel consistently came up as the quintessential bagel shop in Montreal, so I made it my intention to check them out while visiting the city. There are many places to get bagels in Montreal, but St-Viateur is one of the most notable and popular with tourists. While they have several locations throughout the city, I visited their original spot near Mile End since I was in the area. The best way I can describe the a Montreal bagel when comparing it to a NY one is that the former is denser and thinner, with a larger hole in the middle. Additionally, they use sugar in the dough so there is a slight sweetness. The shop itself is somewhat small, typical of other bagel shops I've been to with a small queue area and and ordering counter towards the back. Along the walls are drinks, spreads for the bagels, and merch, though the main focal point is the open production area which contains mountains of bagels ready for picking. The shop is strictly takeout, though one of their locations has a seating area and offers extras such as bagel sandwiches. We decided to share three varieties - plain, sesame, and rosemary. Overall, I thought they were good; compared to bagels outside the NYC area they're far superior, compared to NYC bagels they come close but I still prefer NY. The quality is there though, and the rosemary especially had great flavor. Service was efficient; note they are cash only, so plan accordingly. Overall, I'm glad I stopped in to St-Viateur; I would definitely return the next time I'm in Montreal.
I walked into St-Viatuer to pick up some bagels. This isn't your typical New York style deli where they offer all kinds of sandwiches and different cream cheese spreads. This is a cash only how many bagels you want? And GTFO type of place. But in the nicest way possible. The staff he was great. Ordering process seemed very easy. I ordered a couple of each sesame, poppy and everything bagel. They were still warm and tasted very fresh. All very delicious. The only thing is you eat them right away. I ate a couple of them fresh and tried saving for a couple days later, but were already dry. My fault there I guess. Will definitely be returning as well as checking out their rivals.

Their Traditionnel sandwich on top of an everything bagel is a must. The salmon tasted fresh and paired very well with the warm everything bagel. I came on Friday morning and did not have to wait in line. However, by 12pm lunchtime, a huge line was forming outside. There is a good amount of seating but prepare to wait especially on weekends.
As a NYer we can be snobby about our bagels but this hits. The sweet airy dough of the bagel was perfect. And that crust of sesame seeds made every bite packed with flavor. To the point you dont really need a spread.

St. Viateur is worth whatever wait there is but lucky for me the line wasn't too bad. Cash only but I did see an ATM in there. They have plenty of fresh bagels coming right out of the oven and lots of options to choose from. You also have fridges filled with different cream cheeses and butter to pair with your bagel. Staff is friendly despite the chaos. I went with a sesame, everything, and a cinnamon raisin. My only regret was not ordering more. I bought a specialty avocado cream cheese that paired so well with a warm everything bagel. The bagels are thin with a delicious crunch but still plenty of soft bits that all come together. Happy I was able to stop by and check out the famous St Viateur bagels! Would definitely come back again here whenever I visit the city again.
I didnt know bagels could be this good. I always thought people were overhyping them. Specifically the rosemarry bagel is perfect. The outside has almost a crip edge and the inside is dence and chewy. The rosemarry adds a nice freshness and savory twist. The price was great as well. We ended up getting 6 at a time and almost ate them all in one sitting. The next time we came here we got a handful of their other options like the sesame, apple, and everything. The sesame was almost too fresh to the point that it was a little doughy. The apple wasnt actually as fruity as I imagined but was still pretty decent and the everything bagel was the perfect combo of salt and savory. The line seems long but it moves super fast and there are two locations so you can always go to the other down the road if this one is too long. Overall a must visit if you are in Montreal.

They have a variety of bagel sandwiches, both veg and non-veg, and my favourite has to be the fig & cream cheese one. It's on the sweeter side but pairs perfectly with an Americano. This is a cash-only or debit location, so plan accordingly. The ambience is your classic cozy café vibe, and the patio is the best part. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of how the bagels are freshly made on-site. I genuinely enjoyed watching the entire process. The staff is super friendly and adds to the charm of the place.
FYI: they accept cards now! I was fully expecting them to be cash only like they have been for years but that is no longer the case. These bagels are delicious! My favorite in the world (for context, I was in NYC just a few weeks ago where I tried several from popular places). The sesame bagels here are slightly sweet on the outside with a rich, umami roasted sesame flavor from the seeds and wood firing. I recommend buying a tub of cream cheese or whatever other supplies you'd like from the cooler to make your own sandwich or to dip your bagel. Of course, they're great on their own, but a little chive cream cheese really brings it to the next level. I always stock up during each trip to Montreal and bring some to friends and family back home and everyone always looks forward to that! read more
First of all, I'm a born and raised New Yorker. What does that mean, it means I know bagels. I've heard a lot of people claim the Montreal bagel is better than the New York bagel. Well, I had to find out for myself. The two bagels are very different. I may sound bias but the New York bagel is definitely better. That's not to say I didn't like the Montreal bagel, they're just not the same. The Montreal bagel tastes almost denser. We had the spicy everything bagel which is a first for me and a sesame bagel. Again, good. But I come from the home of bagels so it wasn't anything for me to write home about. read more

I found La Maison du Bagel on the Netflix show: Feed Phil. We were recipients of a just-out-of-the-oven sesame bagel. Best bagel I've had the privilege to enjoy. Service, was fast, friendly and efficient. read more

For those who appreciate celebrity-approved spots, St-Viateur has welcomed famous visitors, including William Shatner of Star Trek fame. My friend and I were surprised to hear that bagels were a big thing in this city, but after a bagel at St. Viateur, I definitely know why. We had JUST eaten a plate of poutine at a place down the street and were planning on picking up a couple bagels for us to eat in the morning for breakfast. As soon as we walked in and saw the fresh sesame seed bagels coming out of the oven, we knew we were just going to sit and eat them there. We each tried a different house-made cream cheese and loved every single bite. read more

CASH ONLY! we knew going in it was cash only, but lost our last 5CAD bill! So we were only able to try one flavor -- apple maple. It was SO yummy! It did make me change my mind about Montreal bagels and only wish I could've tried more flavors. read more
I tried both rivaling famous Bagel shops on my trip to Montreal and I realized that I am a St-Viateur bagel loving foodie! They had some of the freshest bagels. Montreal bagels are special because they hand make them and they mix honey in the batter to get a special texture in the dough. I had a sesame bagel and also got special chipotle cream cheese and it was great! Bagels were soft, chewy, and very very fresh. Note, they accept cash or Canadian debit card so if your visiting from abroad like I was, make sure to have some Canadian cash to try this bagel spot! read more
This place had little line, but it moved quickly. They also only take CASH (both US and CAN), ATM inside. I got the sesame bagel and a small cream cheese, which is extra. I was disappointed with their bagel, the exterior was hard and interior was dried out. The cream cheese did not help... took few bites and it went into the rubbish bin. read more

As far as Montreal bagels go, I'm more of a St-Viateur guy when compared to Fairmount Bagels. Truly, a the sign out front their bakery here claims, it's "La Maison du Bagel!" For full disclosure, I was weaned on old school New York bagels - meaning only savory, smaller than most U.S. bagels these days, dense, and boiled in lye (I guess) - and bialys.. including those from Kossar's which was around the corner from my grandparents' Lower East Side apartment. Echt old school style New York bagels and bialys remain my all time favorites - and that excludes almost all street vendor bagels, cinnamon raisin bagels, blueberry bagels, (fakakta) Rainbow bagels, and any bialy that isn't onion! So, Montréal bagels like St-Viateur were more the size I was used to, except they have a wider hole. Although Montreal bagels are boiled in honey, I found St. Viateur a little less sweet than Fairmount and more to my liking. My reco (at least for Americans) would be to try the Rosemary & Salt variety. You may this variety better to combine these with cream cheese or butter, maybe working less well with smoked fish. That being said, Rosemary & Salt works. [Note - If you make it to Burlington, Vermont, recommend checking out Myer's Wood Fired, including their Montreal Spice bagels. Those spices also includes Rosemary. Yum!] Be advised, their bakery location here is take out only! There is an alternative St-Viateur Bakery & Café location, plus there are restaurants serve fresh St- Viateur bagels. read more
At this well-known, highly recommended bagel shop in Montreal, you get fresh-from-the-oven bagels (we got sesame and everything). There will certainly be a line, but it moves quickly as it's (1) Canadian cash* only, (2) grab toppings, beverages, etc. out of the coolers next to the line, and there's no table service (or seating, for that matter). Now that I know those things, if I return I will be less overwhelmed and more able to grab everything I want as the line surges forward. The bagels were as good as those we get in New York and even better because they were warm and toasty from the oven. *There's an ATM next to the door and a kind soul who happened to be traveling to the United States the next day also offered to exchange cash on rate. read more

The debate is whether Fairmount or St-Viateur Bagel is better, but honestly, you should just try them both and decide for yourself! This spot is only a block or two away from the other St-Viateur Bagel but with a much shorter line, so we came to this one instead. It's interesting how Candian bagel spots won't put the cream cheese topping on you for you; you have to buy a container in the shop and put it on yourself. So prepare in advance and get a container from Walmart if you happen to go before the bagel tours -- I promise it's much cheaper! If you want a lox bagel, St-Viateur Bagel sell packs of smoked salmon ($7.75 for 60 g and $15.50 for 120g). Again, it's probably cheaper at the grocery store. The cheapest bagel flavors are sesame, poppy, and plain, but only by a little. The fancier flavors include all dressed, cinnamon & raisn, rosemary & sea salt, whole wheat, museli, blueberry, maple apple, pumpernickle, onion, and butterscotch caramel. And it's cheaper to get them by the half/dozen. If you're traveling with friends (I know locals aren't reading Yelp reviews on this bagel institution), just get a bunch and have a taste test as I did outside. There was a really nice man who was behind us in line and gave us a piping hot bagel when he saw that we just missed the new batch by a bit. Thanks to the kindhearted stranger, I had one of the best bagels in my life. read more
Fantastic bagel! It was everything I wanted in a top rated bagel spot, perfect texture with a crunchy outside, soft inside, generous seasoning, and the perfect combination of topping for a lox bagel! I wish I could have taken a dozen home but they wouldn't have survived my flight! read more
