My wife and I recently visited the Santa Ynez area for our 30th anniversary. I wanted to find something fun, personal and different than the 'pour and snore' tastings that some wineries have to offer. The few reviews for D'Alfonso - Curran all seemed to touch on an experience that would match what we wanted, and they did not disappoint. We were greeted by Diane and Tracy, two of the most friendly and down to earth people that you would ever want to share a glass of wine with. Within the span of a couple of hours my wife and I felt like we had known them forever and that we were all wine tasting together as a group of friends. To top it all off, the wines were great and we went home with a few bottles to remind us, until we return, of the great time we had. My girlfriend and I have been to every winery and tasting room in the area. Took us several years, but it was a fun adventure. Of all the wineries we've visited DC wines is our favorite. They have the highest quality wines at the most unbearable prices in the entire valley. Their white varietals are unique and delicious. Their pinots are also fantastic. War blows my mind is that they are able to offer their incredible wines at such competitive prices. Quality this food typically costs $75 - $100 but here you can get bottles under $40. The wine was so good, we signed up with their wine club, which is saying something, because I've felt the need to sign up for a wine club. If you go for a tasting here, give yourself at least two hours. read more

So this happened for reals! We were invited by a friend to a "wine tasting". We had an extra hour on a Sunday so we said "sure". Little did we know we would actually spend 4 (yes, four) amazing hours tasting brilliantly crafted wines, having in-depth conversations with our group and the winemaker about grapes to clones to spirituality to dogs to road kill (you had to be there, it was appropriate in the context) to natural wines to so much more that I can't even put in writing. ... Last night my wife decided to make homemade Pasta Sauce. She followed her mama's recipe serving it with a some spicy Italian sausage. I made the starter of Caprese Salad. Some family was over to enjoy the dinner with us so I pulled from my wine Locker. 2005 Curran Sangiovese Bruce Vandale Reserve. I have been a big fan of Kris Curran's wines for years. She is at the top of my list of Central Coast winemakers. Between her and her husband Bruno D'Alfonso. They design some beautiful wines. The wine in question this night was a joint project that they both did to honor a friend of there's Bruce Vandale. Bruce Vandale was very influential in planting some of the first Sangiovese in Central Coast. Sangiovese is an ancient grape from the Tuscany region of Italy. The wine is a VERY full bodied wine with very very dark colors. The wine displays all the characteristics of an Old world Sangiovese. Kris has always had a knack for doing this. Plums, Cherries and a little Vanilla on the nose made this wine perfect with our dinner. Curran's wines can be found throughout So.Cal wine shops. At $40.00 per bottle it is a little on the high side. She does make another Sangiovese at $28.00 per bottle. I will continue to purchase wines from Kris and Bruno for years to come. Give them a Try! *This wine is available in Anchorage, AK, at UnWINEd* My sister and I stopped in here on our way to Paso Robles. Though this winery doesn't have a "proper" tasting room and is a touch out of the way, it is completely worth going to and meeting the winemakers, Kris and Bruno and their german shepherds. You will definitely be set up with a glass and given a tour of the winery with some advance notice. We were treated to horizontal barrel tastings of the pinot noir and drank straight out of the stainless steel fermentation vats as we sampled the new vino bianco. This is a husband and wife team with considerable years of wine-making experience. Each have degrees in viticulture and enology. They each make their own wine specific to their interests and palate and also make a wine line together. Kris: CURRAN label, focus on Spanish varietals Bruno: Di Bruno label, focus on Italian varietals Combined: d'alfonso curran, badge: focus on everything else, ESPECIALLY pinot noirs. Their wines characteristically showcase amazing mouthfeel with ridiculously long finishes. The Grenache and Tempranillo have long been staples in my under the stairs cellar. Each are dense, fruit driven, low on tannins, warm spice notes. The grenache blanc may be one of my favorite whites. I have never tasted such a beautiful expression of melon in a wine before without being overtly sweet. The creamy mouthfeel on the wine indicates malolactic fermentation. I'd been eyeing this winery for quite a while, and have been intimately familiar with both the Santa Barbara/Los Olivos and the Paso wine scenes for many years. Had to get over the mental hurdle of "Oh, they're appointment only. Must be exclusive and possible pretentious". Some places are simply smaller or not set up for carloads of people all day, and they simply need to have arranged tastings because of lack of staff, no facilities, fill-in-the-blank. This is one of those places. We arranged our meeting for 1030am this past Saturday. Quite simply, this was the best tasting I've ever been to and the best possible introduction to the operation, the winemakers and the wine that I've ever experienced. I'll try to keep this brief, since I could go on for pages. A. If you like to know about the wine directly from the winemakers, while they sample it with you, this place is for you. Both Kris and Bruno were on hand, together with about 6 current club members, and my wife and I. B. I learned more about wine and soil chemistry in 15 minutes there than I have in years of talking to other winemakers. Not in a dry, uninvolved manner, but in the most avuncular, friendly and almost professorial way possible. Bruno and Kris REALLY know their stuff, and they way they present things, you want to know more than you already do. C. The wine. Simply the most extraordinary quality throughout their entire collection which, contrary to my first impressions, goes FAR beyond merely Chard and Pinot Noir. Someone else mentioned mouth feel and long finishes. It's one of the reasons we decided to come, but it's simply not possible to describe how each wine lived up to expectations in this regard and then far exceeded them. The Grenache Blanc is simply the best I've ever had, exceeding that of Tablas Creek and Shale Oak in every metric. The Pinots are extraordinary, practically screaming the classic characteristics of the grape, expressing everything wonderful about what that varietal offers and none of the things that so often seem to trip up other producers. We sample two Chards, a Grenache Blanc, Sangiovese, two Pinots, a Syrah, a dry Gewurz and a few others that escape me just now. Oh, and the Grenache Gris, a rose you simply won't find anywhere else, pretty much in the world. D. During the entire time we were there, we also learned about the history of the area, the backgrounds of Kris and Bruno, and the other players in their specific area. In short, we got the entire big picture of who they are and where they fit into this AVA, to say nothing of rather hilarious side trips into philosophy and art. Rather than ramble, suffice it to say that what I thought would be a typical 15-20 minute tasting session ended up closer to three hours, we signed up on the spot and we left with 7 bottles of some of the most magical wine I could hope to have sampled. Finally, what you will NOT find here: Pretense. Any pretense at all. No shale walls with shiny granite counter tops, gigantic windows in a surgical tasting room with vaulted ceilings and a view out to infinity. Snobbery. Zero. None. Nada. This is extraordinary wine, made by amazing people, presented in the most honest and open way possible and served up in basically what is a working agricultural facility. Those ridiculous limos and/or booze cruise buses filled with 40 already lit people, getting in the way and being loud, and generally slowing things up. If you love wine, care about wine and want to experience it in the best, most immediate way possible from the people who make it, cancel your other plans and come here first. You will not be disappointed If you want LOTS of other people, multiple wood fired pizza ovens, 15 pourers on duty wearing aprons with the brand on them, lines to get in, noise and utterly pedestrian wine, just follow the first wine bus you see in the opposite direction and look for the winery with the biggest gift shop! read more

We stumble on this today by luck, we were invited in like we were family by the wine maker Kris. My wife and I were poured wines out of the barrel and stainless steal tanks. What a great time, spent over two hours there drinking some of the best wines I've ever had. We met some new friends that share a lot in common with us. Except, when we once again met up with the wine makers, we had such fun, enjoyed great wine, and were enriched with another wine making lesson...we didn't.
