Hands down, best wines in the area!!!! The owners are so sweet and the employees are so helpful and fun. The spirit of Hawaii is definitely here! The tasting room alone has this super chill and relaxed vibe, which is more than I can say for some other tasting rooms I've been to. The wines! Omg! Not your usual Pinot or Chardonnay wines, they are all about Grenache, Riesling, Syrah, and many more that you don't usually find in this area! If you are in the area you need to check this place out! Not only will you have a great time, but you will also get to sample wines from, in my opinion, the best wine maker! It was tasty fun and interesting to be able to swirl wine and also talk with the winemaker, Mikael, right there in this cozy tasting room. We had heard about their Grenache, and are so glad we visited to taste and purchase. We also thoroughly enjoyed his Viognier, Hapa Blanc (white blend), and Mouvedre. Definitely recommend visiting Mikael and all of his wines. Conveniently located in the center of town, near the roundabout and flagpole, in between Coquelicot and Solminer tasting rooms. read more

Super friendly and centrally located tasting room in Los Olivos. The staff is so great and knowledgeable. It was such a pleasant stop to do some tasting and then we took home a ton of wine too. Love this wine and the ranch. Service is always great. Could be better sometimes the servers pay attention to certain tables more and I've had to go ask for another refill. But I love the wines. My husband and I have been of their wine club for two years and it sucks to write this review. However, their customer service is negligent and absurd. We signed up for pick up instead of delivery for our club wines and got charged every time for a release but when we went to pick them up "our account was paused." Which we never paused. And it took us to call our bank and take physical copies of our bank statements and emails to prove it. We were assured it was a one time thing. We decided we would just sign up for delivery since we live all the way in Oceanside and sometimes we don't go right when they come out and thought maybe that was the issue. We filled out the form and were assured our account would be updated. Only to find out now we are being charged twice due to their negligence. And now are having to deal with having to prove everything again. I love this wine but the hassle and continuous issues speaks volumes of their company. read more

Went here on a Monday afternoon, Robert was working. The wines were great, Robert was very knowledgeable about the wines and we had great conversation about wine and food. After a couple days of wine tasting we honestly did not come in with the intent to buy any wine but just do a tasting. We had purchased lots of wine already that weekend. However the wine was good and Robert so personable we wanted to leave with a couple bottles, and we did. We will definitely be back the next time we head up to Los Olivos! read more

Ok, so being from Hawaii and being on a wine tasting vacation in Los Olivos, this place is a MUST! Our group of 5 descended on the small tasting room situated right in the heart of Los Olivos. We entered and said "ALOHA!" The 2 gals behind the counter were so excited that we were from Hawaii! So, all my Hawaii peeps, be sure to stop in and try this place out! The owner is known as the King of Grenache. One of our friends in our group absolutely loves Grenache and he was thrilled with this particular brand. He said it truly was one of the best he's had. My favorite was "Ronin". The Hapa Blanc wasn't too shabby either. If you are in the area, definitely check it out. I didn't pick up any to take back to Hawaii, because I understand that Tamuras carries it. I'll be sure to check next time I'm there....hopefully I wasn't led astray as I truly enjoyed the wines. read more

We have the AXXESS book. Kaena was in there for a buy 1 get 1 tasting. I was blown away by how great their wine is. So was hubby. We were told that Mikael, the winemaker, was the grenache king. After tasting the grenaches, we had no doubt, he is the king. We love the aloha vibe and how sweet the wine pourers (insert the proper word here) are. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. Needless to say, we joined the winery on day 1 and have never looked back. Kaena is conveniently located near Lake Cachuma and the Chumash Casino Resort. I highly recommend both of these places if you want to stay local. read more

Interesting experience here. It's a Hawaiian-themed tasting room which feels somewhat out of place in the middle of rustic Los Olivos, except for me, anything Hawaiian puts me in a good mood. It's all about the aloha. The wines were subtle in style but solid. The ladies pouring the vino were friendly but in a sales-y kind of way. I was told--twice--that the owner/winemaker was labeled the "King of Grenache" by US Airways. Consider that for a moment. Is that a compliment? If US Airways likes your wine, sure, that's great, but I personally wouldn't use that particular line when selling my product. On the other hand, the Grenaches here are indeed good and I walked out with a bottle. Kaena is an interesting change of pace from your typical winery or wine tasting room. read more

She would not engage in any discussion about the wines or the wine maker from Hawaii. It felt like we were annoying her by asking questions. A total disappointment. Kaena is an awesome tasting room with a distinctly local Hawaiian story to it. My wife and I were recommended to visit Kaena, which is a few doors down from the Fess Parker Inn where we were staying. As soon as you walk into Kaena, you know you are in a different kind of tasting room. Kaena has a really casual feel, with decor that recalls old Hawaii. Mike, the owner, was there when we visited, and we found out he actually grew up and went to school in Hawaii, near our home. Mike's story as to how he became a winemaker is really awesome, and he is an extremely warm and friendly guy, with a really big heart. This guy exudes aloha. But in all seriousness, this is Los Olivos we are talking about, so if you are going to have a wine tasting room, you gotta have some game. Well, Mike's Kaena winery did not disappoint. His passion, and his specialty, is Grenache wine. You will taste grenache at some of the other tasting rooms, but Kaena's Grenache really is a step above. We enjoyed it very much, and purchased some of his estate Grenache. Now from time to time you will see folks walking around time holding a bottle or two that they bought from a tasting room, but we actually met a couple of folks in Los Olivos who were carrying a case of Kaena's Grenache. Now how often do you see that? Answer: It's really rare. When you visit Los Olivos, you really do have to make a short list of tasting rooms to visit, as there are way too many to begin to visit them all. I certainly recommend that Kaena be on your list. The wine is very enjoyable, and so is the Hawaiian vibe and story that go along with this place. read more

The service was personable and friendly, despite being alone and us bringing a crowd (my husband and I have a habit of doing that.) She was able to work both groups (the other party was about 5 people) with efficiency. I loved the vibe here. I think the 1000 cranes was my favorite, just made it feel like a happy place. That being said, not everyone in this area cares about atmosphere - just give me good wine - so now I'll speak to that. As previously mentioned, I was on a rose kick, and theirs didn't disappoint. The Grenache, though, was probably the highlight. It was delicious! If you only have time to stop in here for one thing, just go with that. I mean, it's something I'll be talking about (and dreaming about both before and after we consume the bottle we brought home.) If you're already headed into the quaint little town of Los Olivos, make sure you hit up the Hawaiian-style tasting room. You won't be sorry. Unless, you're like me and don't buy one of the hats you fell in love with and are kicking yourself for that. :) read more

came by for our 5 year anniversary Los Olivos trip. our 3rd trip to this spot. they have the best Rose in town here. and that says a lot considering all the vintners. service was awesome and quick. we did a tasting, but, already knew were picking up a couple of the grenache roses. and by a couple, i mean 4. so good. the wine maker's story line is also a great listen. hawaiian dude starts making wine in california, ftw! definitely highly recommend and will be back. read more

I went to this tasting room back in 2016 and was blown away by their Rose. I only bought a couple bottles of it but that was a big mistake because it was so good my boyfriend and I went through it really fast. We finally went back a couple weekends ago and had Sara pour us some wine and we got hooked again. Sara was super friendly and nice and let us taste multiple wines. We signed up to be members right then and there and took a case home of Rose and whites. Love this winery! read more

A whole party inside drinking and having a good time and was told they closed 7 minutes ago... Even pleaded that we were here to buy. That's too bad... Kaena is unique because it has a Hawaiian vibe.  Mikael, the winemaker, is from the Islands and he has injected the aloha spirit into his name and themes.  We very much enjoyed the whites--the Albarino and the Grenache Blanc.  These are very luscious and distinct and we highly recommend them.  You want to take the detour to taste these wines.  Michael's signature wine in reds in the Tierra Alto Grenache.  It is leathery and earthy and so very yummy.  The Syrah is also equally tantalizing.  The Tierra Alto vineyard is on the northland of Ballard Canyon, which is a beautiful drive.  It's fun to see the vineyard and then taste the wines.  Kaena sources grapes from a number of different areas, but we liked the Tierra Alto best of all.  Chloe, the wine manager, is very informative and kind.  Sarah is also very friendly and knowledgeable .  We also met Alex, who is so informative that we realized that we need to brush up on our winemaking basics. A nice surprise. 5 year's ago I could barely tell good wine from bad. Now, the wife and I are snobs. We used to spend many weekend getaways in the Santa Ynez valley and now catch ourselves going further up to Paso Robles for our wine tasting, as our palettes really enjoy the punchier wines up there. That said, we agreed to retry Los Olivos and while eating at Sides Hardware (OMG!!), we had a glass of the Kaena Grenache. Yowza! We really enjoyed it and the waiter told us they were king of Grenaches in the valley. We went for a tasting and enjoyed many of their whites and reds, but seriously dug into their Grenaches. Really well done. Came home with a number of bottles, and they may make it not our wine club list someday. Nice people, good wines. read more

I've been to a lot of tasting rooms and generally the vibe is very stuffy. They have a list of things to taste and they go through it without variance. Kaena is COMPLETELY different. We always have great conversation with the ladies handling our tasting. Once they know we're buying they kick-out the tasting list and operate off of what we're into. My wife likes whites and i love Grenache. Last visit we each had our own flight of anything they thought we'd like (though i'll guess this may vary with large groups for obvious reasons). Every time we're in Los Olivos it's the highlight of our trip. The company really focuses on Granache so it's perfect for me but my wife (whose pallet and preferences are completely different) also loves this place and is the one that suggested we join their wine club. I was across the street with my group when I turned around and saw the state flag of Hawai'i waving at me. I left my group & went to investigate. THE BEST DECISION I made that day. Chloe, the hostess, was so friendly, knowledgeable and full of ALOHA. We chatted like old time friends, I learned about the local boy from Hawai'i Kai & his visionary wines. I walked out with a couple bottles of Hapa Blanc & Ronin. I am a wine neophyte so not a fan of reds BUT the Ronin changed my mind. Such a smooth, silky wine. IF I go back it will be because of KAENA. They poured the wine and walked away. No idea why they ignored us most of the time we were in there. Maybe because it was close to closing? There was one other couple there and the pourers focused their attention on them the whole time. Don't normally complain about customer service, but wine tasting has a lot of customer interaction involved and I missed that part of it here.
