I left a message but no one called me back :( Called back the next day and was able to schedule an appointment for 3 pm. Arrived a few minutes early and was instructed that the stylist was running 15 minutes behind. Well I didn't actually get to the sink for my hair to be washed for ~30 minutes. In general, I enjoy the hair washing as it usually involves a nice head massage and is relaxing. Well this was FAR from relaxing. I felt like she was clawing my scalp with her nails, thankfully it only lasted a few minutes! Finally, I met with the stylist and told her I would like to keep the majority of my length but to cut it so that it was healthy. She was very receptive to my request and before she would cut more she asked if it was ok. So the cut went well. She asked if I wanted my hair "straight straight" or "straight with body". I opted for "straight straight" but the blow out fell a bit...well...flat. I think next time I require a hair cut I will seek my regular stylist.

Beware of the other two stylists, especially when Luz isn't there, the shorter one cannot style hair, always wants to go home early & both will raise the prices for everything when Luz isn't at the salon. I come here biweekly to maintain my weave & I have my weave removed, hair relaxed & colored before I get my next weave installed elsewhere. It's best to bring your own shampoo, conditioners, dye, relaxer & curling irons (Shining Star only has flat irons). Luz will take $5 off of relaxer & dye services if you bring your own relaxer & dye. I'm incredibly picky about who does my hair, and there are so many mediocre, overpriced dry bars…read morepopping up. But Mane Haven is AMAZING and I'm so glad I found it -- on a Sunday! The interior of the salon is really polished and stylish but understated, and it's really quiet and peaceful. I have a sew-in weave/extensions, so I'm doubly wary of how my hair is handled and I'm used to spending 3+ hours getting it done (which is why Sunday appointments are such a convenience for me). I made an appointment for 3PM using Vagaro just before I went to bed, which was also extremely convenient. If you log into Vagaro, search for "Mane Haven" in Islip and you can make an appointment whenever. (I think I made mine at like 2:30 AM.) The shampoo part was excellent (using my favorite kind of tingly shampoo) and Kristin thoroughly cleaned my scalp under the braids. Stand dryers are not my favorite thing, and she hand dried my hair. In about an hour from start to finish! Kristin is also great to talk to and the salon ambiance is so pleasant. Mane Haven also does extensions, which is not uncommon at dry bars nowadays. But almost every dry bar doing extensions sticks to tape or keratin and does not have the necessary experience to do great extensions -- I had a weave going in, but I would feel comfortable getting extension services here, too. Prices are more than reasonable, and my hair came out so perfect! At other boutique dry bars, I've left with damp hair or neglected edges, but every aspect was 10/10. From style to service and cost was great, and I definitely think I will be back often. If you're going for a first-time visit and don't know Islip well, it's just west of Town Hall and between the candy place and the Acai bowl place. Also, there's a back entrance and marked spots that are in a larger lot -- make sure you park in the right ones.

She takes care of my natural hair by being gentle and using QUALITY hair products. She also has the same price of other salons that don't. (25 for a wash and set.) She NEVER puts a straightener to my hair and gets it just as straight, if not straighter than salons that do. I do have a few issues with their practices. 1. If you make an appointment, do NOT expect them to start your hair at that time. Even when I was the first appointment of the day, there was always someone already in the chair when I arrived. And I was 10 minutes early. I have NEVER been started at my appointment time. The least amount of time I waited was 30 minutes. I have waited 2 hours before! I find this unprofessional. When you make an appointment pack a book and a snack. You WILL be there for hours! I have seen women fidgetting and rolling their eyes in the waiting area. 2. I am concerned about the hygene of this place. There is a woman who "preps" you. I can't remember her name. I think it starts with a "T." I have seen her walk in the shop, do your hair, scratch in her own scalp (A LOT), adjust and dig in her pants, go out for lunch, eat lunch and then go in someone else's hair all without EVER washing her own hands once! That is disgusting and unhygenic. A stylist should not operate like that! If they are unhygenic aboout themselves, I worry about the cleaniness of the shop and the combs and brushes they use. Other than those 2 issues it is a good place to get your hair done. The owner does a great job. I always looked snatched there! I have gotten perms, color, cuts and tracks put in there.
