Do you drink coffee and/or know people who drink coffee? Then you should know about D'Amico. The shop isn't that much to look at, but they've got the good stuff for that perfectly legal, socially acceptable addiction you need to feed every morning. So for years, I've been grabbing friends by the scruff of their neck as they try to walk into Starbucks, and dragging them into D'Amico. Not on my watch. I bring them over, and watch as their eyes widen in wonder. I watched her marvel over the machine mixing and roasting beans in the back of the shop (used to be in the front). I watch them peruse all the options, finally picking a blend (organic, fair trade Sumatra maybe, or French Costa Rican). I listen as they and the helpful coffee guy discuss the type of coffee machine they have, and watch him grind the beans into a bag specifically for them. And then I allowed them to kiss my ring for showing them where they SHOULD be buying coffee. For the past decade or so, we've also been gifting a bag of coffee to a lot of our loved ones, because it's a useful gift that everyone can appreciate. This establishment has seen some rough times recently since my review back in '16! Covid and deaths in the family to name a few. This business is still owned and operated by the same family. D' Amico continues to serve the best coffee ever --iced or hot--and I continue to love the White Christmas blend all year long. They're a roastery so you can buy a variety of coffee here whether whole coffee beans or ground. Nutella, Hazelnut and good old Columbian are some popular picks. I dropped by this morning to have a quick breakfast: 2 eggs any style served with toast and home fries. All for $6.95 and quite good/above average. Coffee is additional and self serve. They have a pretty good menu offering a variety for breakfast and lunch. Place your order at the counter but it will be served to your table if dining in. What I truly miss about the old D'Amico is the set up prior to the pandemic. It was more cozy, private and amenable to breakfast/lunch with friends or working alone on your laptop. Though indoor seating is available (just a few tables) the entire ambience is gone. What's also gone are some familiar local faces who have since passed away. Despite this, D'Amico has a good fan base: locals who have lived in the neighborhood for a long time, newcomers just moving to the area or those dropping by for the first time. I've been coming to the area to get my nails done for over 4 years and I never noticed that there was a coffee stop across the street. I finally stepped in for a coffee fix after getting my nails done and it was quite nice. They have so many flavors available and you can fix it to your own liking at the condiments bar. I like that, because most times baristas overload the half&half when I ask for a tiny smidge. Staff were friendly and nice. So happy my boyfriend and I stopped in here Saturday. Such a great coffee shop! The kind gentleman who helped us recommended some coffees and we bought three different kinds/flavors. He was very knowledgeable! We also got a large iced coffee (it's legit large lol). I got a large iced latte with almond milk. It was good! Huge! Prices aren't bad at all. They give you the cup with however much ice you want, and you can fill it up on your own. There are plenty of ingredients that you can put in there like sugar water, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. Buy local! They've been in business nearly a century with the original family owners. Solid coffee choice, both a weekend treat and a daily staple. Affordable coffee beans custom ground to order. If you're unsure about a blend, you can try their top selections in either hot or iced variety. I typically do this for their more expensive offerings. I haven't tried any of their espresso drinks, but considering that most of their counter space is devoted to their drips, it's basically a drip place. Same with their food menu. I've ordered ahead once before, but they only recieved the order once I got there so I had to wait anyway. Not much more than basic deli/diner food but again affordable and not bad. Hands down my favorite coffee shop in Brooklyn. Service is efficient and friendly. I have frequently come to this coffee shop for many years now and for good reason. D'Amico coffee has the best, flavorful, and robust coffee available. Plus it's a small business, family owned and operated, for as long as it has been in existence, well over 60 years. I've tried all of their options of iced coffee flavors. My favorites are the Nutella and also their White Christmas which are incredible. There is a station where you can add simple syrup, or a milk of your choosing etc... I've also purchased different flavors of their beans and had them ground for my drip coffee machine. It is my first time ordering from the D'Amico food menu. Delivery service was early (yay!). The food was still hot (double yay!). The scrambled eggs were real eggs, and cooked through. The bacon was tasty and well cooked, no raw sections on the strips. The pancakes were fluffy and light, not tasteless but not overwhelming either. Just the right amount of flavor with the syrup. The western omelette was a little over cooked, but the ingredients were fresh, the peppers were crispy, and the ham was flavorful. A really good breakfast experience. I tried the hazelnut coffee, which was yummy with no sugar needed. I didn't purchase any whole beans coffee since my French press have been packed away back at my parents, but I must say as a first timer this place got the charms of being a good local spot where I can imagine regulars hanging out there all day. I came after work, and arrived half a hour before they close. I managed to get some work done, and even stayed there about 10 minutes over with no one bothering me or telling me anything. The staff is ...(thinking of the right words) most pleasing group of people that you can find in a coffee shop. They are mainly older age Italians which is adorable because even though the store got hipsterized the heart and soul of the shop still remains through the staff. I was greeted by a lady in the counter that told the other patron to wait a minute so she can serve me because I got there first. She also guided me through the condiment bar and brought out soy milk for me with no complaints. When asked what time the store closes (which is 20 minutes later), she assure me that I can stay until the closing time. (I actually ended up staying later since there were so many locals still in the sitting area while they started cleaning up.) Great for coffee but don't even think of having a sandwich. My friend & I ordered 2 genoa salami sandwiches. No exaggeration, 2 paper thin slices. The slicing machine had to be set on the thinnest setting to get it that thin. Even folded & overlapping, it didn't equal 1 decent size slice. When we complained, the non English speaking staff didn't understand us. Funny, they understood us when we placed the order. Second issue, the bathrooms have no sink. There is a sink around the corner from the bathrooms & is kind of hidden. I couldn't wash my hands before eating my lunch ' it was very distressing to me eating with the same hands that just.... Walking into D'Amico makes me wish I grew up in Carroll Gardens. It has that family/home-y feel to it, that's harder to find now a days. I prefer to buy my coffee here, rather than at a chain market. Why, you ask? Because they roast their beans every day, on site* and have been doing so since 1948. Every time I go here to buy a pound or so of coffee I am warmly greeted and the staff are always so nice and friendly. I love walking home with a bag of freshly ground coffee and can't wait to brew a pot. I haven't yet had any sandwiches, but I hear they're pretty tasty. Ah, next time for sure. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee warrants five stars on its own. The small, mom-and-pop feel of the joint (complete with requisite old men shootin' the breeze on a bench outside or at the tables in the back) make this place so much more appealing than any high-falutin' coffee house. Add to that the coffee is wicked good and we have a winner, folks. Maybe I shouldn't mention this 'cause it might damage my credibility, but I've never liked black coffee. I like it light and sweet. The Copenhagen blend at D'Amico, however, might just change my cream and sugar ways. Smooth and delicious with nary a hint of burnt bitterness, this black coffee is life-changing. For me, anyway. And just when I thought it couldn't get better than a wink and a thick Brooklyn-accented "Take care" from the guy working the counter, I hear the older Italian guy telling someone he's "the lover." There's no basket of corny world music CD's by the register, no bespectacled wannabes blogging by the front window, no self-congratulatory display of "fair trade" coffees complete with long-winded, patronizing explanatory pamphlets about how we can all "get green". Ask for some sickly sweet fake coffee drink and you're likely to get laughed out of the store. And that's as it should be, nancy boy! D'Amico is an old school, unapologetically un-PC place. The owners are serious about coffee and it shows. Huge open burlap sacks of coffee beans, white aprons on the staff, decor that doesn't seem to have changed much in thirty years, unsmiling patrons--it's all there. Be ready to order and don't give anybody any guff, okay? The smell when you walk in is incredible, perfect, exactly what you hoped it would be--roasting beans, tasty baked goods, a faint hint of smoke. These guys know their coffee and but good. Don't think you can bullshit your way through a coffee conversation with the staff like I saw some random douchebag try to do on my first visit there; he left the store in abject shame after getting schooled about the difference between some particular roast he wanted and "regular beans". Fool! You cannot dupe the coffee man. Not only do we buy our beans here and I stop in frequently for the best cup in the neighborhood, but they even put a gift basket together for us by special request and delivered it to my midwife in Windsor Terrace--no extra charge. Walk past what is left of the old-time Italians sitting out front no matter what the weather* and walk into coffee heaven. I'm not a coffee drinker though, so what I really come to D'Amicos for is the sandwiches. Yes, this coffee shop makes sandwiches, and they're amazing. This is the basicly not even worth thinking about. It is just the best place to buy coffee beans, hands down. The people are local and I think have each been working there since the begining of time. I have tried a few Colombian and Kenyan blends that were good, the carroll gardens blend that was a little to light for my perticular brand, the red hook blend which was good and little darker, and the house blend. I like the house blend for drip but my beau got it esspresso ground and WOOOO! So damn good. The pounds range from $8 to $14ish? So its not like you are spending more than you would at the grocery.
