The pizza is our favorite. The atmosphere is genuine. Service is good although they are always busy. I do wish they were open more.

I just moved to Windber and I wanted pizza for dinner. I ordered ahead by calling the restaurant. I was given a 30 minute window for pickup. When I arrived at the restaurant there was barely any parking because they were very busy. I did not mind it at all, that means that they must have good food. I went inside and I was attended very quickly! I was in and out in less than 10 min! I was surprised that even though they were so busy, they made sure I got my pizza on time. Do you know what I hate? I hate people who visit a pizza place, get take out, and then write a negative review about the quality of the pizza. But I couldn't get my family to pile into the minivan and head over the mountain for pizza. However, I still wanted to try this classic place which prides itself on "Abruzzo Style" pizza. I'm a pizza lover, and knowledgeable on a wide variety of styles, but this one was new to me. And the "oil pizza" on the menu seemed like it might be the purist expression of the form. Here's what I know, it doesn't travel well. So I'm going to be headed back to D'Arc's and I'm going to make the family come with me. Because more than anything else, I need to try this hot out of the oven. The meatball sub was tasty. The $2 pork sandwich came cold and was unexpectedly spicy, but I heated it up in the oven at home, and that was a treat. Breadsticks were oily, garlicky, cheesy, and delicious. I hate myself for even suggesting such a thing, but I kinda wish there was some ranch dressing on hand to dunk them into. There was once a place in Berkeley that made breadsticks like these, and that's how they were served. Sometimes, food is all about the memories. Everyone enjoyed the pizzas. Me? I thought they were fine. But I know about the damage being closed in cardboard and reheated can cause to pizza. My apologies to everyone at D'Arc's for not having my first experience with their pizza in the restaurant. Hours are 1500-2100 Th-Sun. Walked in at 2035 on Sunday and they wouldn't serve us because they "stopped seating" at 2030. They said we could place a takeout order inside. The party left after discussing what to do next and how ridiculous this was. Called at 2043 and no answer. Called at 2045 which was supposedly the "cutoff time" and someone actually answered and we were told it was told it was "too late" for takeout orders. After explaining that we were just there to dine-in and denied service, and also called just prior to the "cutoff time" for takeout orders and nobody answered, we were placed on hold and heard arguing in the background before the call was eventually disconnected (we were hung-up on). Our family has been long- time patrons of this establishment (bachelorette parties, holiday events, etc), for over 50 years. No wonder small businesses don't last; being open 4 days a week for limited hours and turning away customers like that is a shame. The original D'Arc's would roll over in their graves. They used to be open after football games. What place actually tells customers sitting at one of their tables that they don't want their business?! Might as well close and have another business come in that really wants to work. read more

With all of this COVID 19 business, we had ordered our usual pizzas. We allowed that period of time that they had told us and when went to pick the pizzas up early, we were pleased that it was, in fact, ready. I have a disability so that I could not carry the pizza and the employee had cheerfully offered to take the order to my car!!! Impressive! Delicious pizza with amazing handmade crust in a great atmosphere full of local charm. I was blown away by the price of the pizza which all tastes homemade and fresh. A sheet pizza (huge rectangular pizza) cost less here than a medium at a local chain. (The rectangular pizza gives your crust eaters and anti-crust people each a chance to enjoy!) Family-owned and operated with tons of history on the walls. Love the D'Arc fam and love this pizza!!!! read more

Love love love D'Arc's pizza!! If I've had a rough day at work or a really long week, my husband just smiles and says, "you want me to call D'Arc's?" I've eaten a LOT of pizza in my brief time on earth, and this is my favorite. Thin, dark crust, bubbly browned cheese, perfect sauce - I order the Margherita pizza just for me! And you can bet I eat the whole thing in one sitting. I can't speak for the other food, because I've never had it. The pizza is a true gift to humanity. read more

Gosh, we love this pizza. We stop any time we're in windber. So far, we've only eaten pizza, and we usually take a tray home with us. We love the buffalo chicken pizza, but it is a little spicy. The regular pepperoni is yummy. We love the crust that tastes pan fried, but it's not super thick like other pan pizzas. Give it a try! You won't regret it. Best kept secret in the area. By far the best pizza. The wedding soup is second to none. A cozy throw back with a mix of a bar and dinning room. Service is fast and extremely friendly. You have your choice settle into a table or nestle up to the bar. Friendly customers though after 5 you will have a lot of people coming in for take out. Let's just say I have been coming here on a monthly basis for 5 years with my wife for dinner, especially in the winter because of the wedding soup. Oh I like the thin pizza best. Park in the back and enter through the back door. You can use the side door if you park on the street. read more

A local favorite for great pizza. Going to D'arcs is like stepping back in time. The decor pays tribute to the coal industry and high school sports achievements among other tidbits from the past, many different things to look at when waiting on your order. There is a small bar area and good deal of dining space. Pizza comes in rectangular form, the crust, sauce, cheese combination is perfection. Salads are all very good, but we seem to always return to the antipasta salad as our favorite. D'arcs doesn't go heavy on the lettuce like some joints, but balances every ingredient. The relaxing dining area is a great place for family and friends to hang out and always a post sporting event option. read more

I really love this place. The pizza is the best around. Commercial pizza places don't even compare. The service is great and the atmosphere is very enjoyable. It is very warm and inviting with a mismatched assortment of antiques and family photos that go together perfectly. I love picking up pizza on the weekends from here because it's a short drive from my college campus and the prices are great! you MUST try the bread-sticks, they are nothing like the traditional kind served everywhere else. I grew up in the suburbs of NY city. You know we have good pizza when you travel the country and see so many places that boast that they have have "NY Pizza". Much of my family lives in the Johnstown - Windber area. l spent several summers there back in the 60s / 70s. One of our favorite places was D'Arcs. I always thought it was the best pizza outside the NYC area and the debates between myself and family about pizza from both places were endless but fun.. I was pleasantly surprised when I came back to Windber several years ago and saw a "new" D'Arcs. The pizza now is as good as ever, and I must admit I like it as much as anything from NY. I live fairly close to Scranton now and their "world famous Old Forge pizza". It's good but pales in comparison to D'Arcs. Last month I came to visit my sister there. She is a recent transplant. She had never been to D'Arcs but when I took her there she said it was the best pizza she's ever had. Looking forward to eating there later this week. You guys could thrive in Little Italy or on Arthur Avenue. read more

This was a favorite high school hangout after football games. The prices are very reasonable and the pizza is an absolute favorite. Its a friendly small town atmosphere. Also very accommodating when it comes to wanting to have a private party at the shop. Only downside is that they are only open a couple days a week. read more

What can I say we eat out a lot and no matter what we always find our way back to D'arc's. I think they offer the best pizza in Somerset and Cambria County. They make a super wedding soup. What makes this place is the rustic old time feeling, clean bathrooms and good service topped of with good food. Parking can be tight but there is on street parking. They have a small bar and a two part seating area. One main and the other is smaller and more private near the bathrooms. Funny but in the many times we have eaten here I have only sat at the bar once. The place is busy during the evenings with take out orders but you can always find a place to sit and eat. I personally think this place is the best kept secret in the Johnstown area. So if you are looking for a light dinner or lunch instead of a full size dinner menu you owe yourself a trip here. read more

I have fallen in love with this restaurant. After three recent visits I have absolutely no complaints at all, only praise. Every menu item has been fantastic. The prices are more than reasonable and the wait staff incredibly friendly and helpful. The atmosphere, in this early 20th century Italian immigrant grocery, screams comfy retro. Bring the whole family, or several families, for an enjoyable meal. Whatever you order, make sure you start with the Italian Wedding Soup.
