The Windber Hotel is charming and so convenient if you're attending a performance at the Arcadia across the street. I've found the food and service to be inconsistent. Usually the food and service have been OK, but my last visit wasn't great. It took 30 minutes to get our food (small pizza, steak salad, patty melt and burger). My patty melt was loaded with garlic (like, why???) and the fries were limp, though I had requested them well done. The server didn't check on us until we were ready to pay. So no drink refills and no opportunity to ask them to dunk those fries for a bit longer. Overall it wasn't awful, but not great and not as good as past visits. Still, if I'm going to the Arcadia, I'll come back here for dinner just for the convenience. read more

Stopped here as a backup plan due to another restaurant in town not having what it takes. Anyway - really liked the look of this place - very dicey with friendly bartenders and tentative help. Ordered a cherry limeade mixed drink to start and a couple of appetizers - Buffalo chicken nachos and fried pickles. I would say the fried pickles were the best part here - good breading to them and very hot. The nachos not so much - I pictured white cheese and wing sauce over homemade tortilla chips - but instead it was yellow chips and Pete's red hot on chicken chunks with yellow nacho cheese and lettuce etc. I just think with Buffalo chicken the nacho cheese takes away from it all. For my entree I went with the crab cake wedge (which I'll be honest I have no idea what I was doing). The guy did tell me it was plain inside so I added tarter sauce - and it was good just really pedestrian in terms of taste. I think with some additions and subtractions this place would be 4/5 - maybe I'll try it again and get something more realistic for my tastes. read more

I have heard many things about Windber Hotel and finally had a chance to visit. One thing that I found out is that this is not the place that has the world's largest ouija board, that is elsewhere in Windber. The bar area is huge. There are multiple places to go within that can make or break your night here. You have the bar which is long. Stretches from the front of the building to the side entrance. Tons of seating around it and allows for a different perspective dependent on where you sit. Off the bar is a large seating area, good for dining and has a space for a stage for live bands to play. The night I was here one such was, which can make for a hard time to have a conversation, but a good time to get out there and dance to the tunes. Off the bar area is a small room with arcade games, dartboard, and a piano that now is an aquarium. Spent a good bit of time in here. Off of this room you have the patio, which, given the weather, can be packed. Smoking is allowed on the patio. There is a small porch area out front with some high top tables and smoking is also allowed in that area. Beers available here doesn't cover everything you would find in other bars, but they do have some pretty good things in their selections. Makes for a great night out to sample something different. The staff are upbeat and pleasant to deal with. read more

Too many bad experiences with food and service to recommend. They have cool events, but often charge at the door. The bathrooms are small and usually dirty, the food is hit or miss, and the service has been poor one time too many. This beautiful old-fashioned bar is worth a visit for drinks and/or dinner. The beer list is always good, and the cocktail specials are worth trying. The Philly cheesesteak with shrimp sounds odd but really works. Wings are good too. Wide variety of food choices - fries were very good and burger well prepared. Lots of beer choices too. Architecturally interesting. The prices to wet your whistle are cheap! $19.50 for the old man and I to kick back 8-9 beers was a blessing. I experienced no problem with the service, as a matter of fact, I was amazed at how quickly the ladies behind the bar refreshed my beverage. If I weren't in town for one night only, I would show my face here again. They had a decent celtic band playing, $5 cover, but I would have paid the cover after hearing them jam. I entered the Windber Hotel one day when it was freezing cold out and was warmed with what was the best bowl of chicken soup in my life. It had great flavor, tender chicken - the perfect lunch with a beer! And they have a great selection of that too...the staff here has always been friendly with me. I wish I could give this place a 3.5 honestly. Its not that its bad, actually quite contrary. But depending on when you go (and how unfamiliar you are to them) it can be quite a disappointing experience. I've also found if you don't sit at the bar you get some very spotty service (they tend to have their rushes, and the service essentially stops to the tables). Anyways, the busy nights are Monday nights (trivia) Thursday Nights (College Night) and Friday/Saturday are both typically packed with some live music. From a dinner aspect if you come during the week you are typically safe, but like I said, if theres any sporting event (pens, steelers) or there is a special going on (Trivia night) you may be disappointed in the table service. The Bar service is great though! Onto the food. The wings are some of the best in the Johnstown area, their HoTel Ranch are delicious. Their Pizza is really good, I just don't suggest reheating it (much better out of the oven). Their fries, buffalo chicken dip, wedges, sandwiches are all good as well. Typically running weekly specials that are also very tasty! The bar itself is gorgeous, along with the kinda old time feel you get from here. Their happy hour specials are pretty great as well. (I believe the domestic drafts drop to $1 during happy hour). And on Thursday Nights I know Miller Lite and Coors Lite are $1 until midnight (College Night). Overall some great food, but the service can be spotty at times. read more

The Windber Hotel lies within a beautifully remodeled hotel in downtown Windber. The place has a lot of small town charm. Inside, the tin ceilings were restored and they have a beautiful bar. Best beer in town, I miss the one bar tender that pored Guinness correctly. It was the only time I ever received a proper pour in this town. It even had a shamrock! They get two stars for being a somewhat unique establishment for the area. The hipster-like micro brews, local bands and "foodie" mentality are hard to find around here. For these reasons alone, it's definitely worth checking out. However, the service is sub-fast food. McDonalds employees at least try to be polite. I was on a blind date, super nervous and, barely able to hold a conversation. I ordered the Portabello sandwich. In my defense, I've seen this on menus before and, generally, it's served as a chicken breast substitute. I.e. same fixens. This sandwich was literally a mushroom cap on a bun, nothing else. When I received it, I politely asked my waiter if I could get some lettuce, tomato, mayo and cheese as well...He proceeded to loudly (like, all of the tables around us witnessed him humiliating me) question why I had't read the menu and, why, would I want to send it back to the kitchen? As if I had just insulted his mother. He took it back but, I didn't feel confident enough that someone's DNA had missed my sandwich to eat it. The whole scene was so weird and uncomfortable that I never heard from my date again...In case you decide to frequent this establishment, the uppity waiter in question is approximately 5'9'' with sandy blond short hair and an average "I'm too cool to work out" build. Don't eat what he serves you...I've never been back, I can buy micro brews and cook my own awesome food for far less than these rude a-holes charge...easy choice. read more

I sure wish I would've snapped a pic of my meal. I had the beer battered chicken meal. It was burned. I told the waitress it was a little burnt and she said well they had to cook it good to make sure the meats temp was high enough. It tasted like charcoal. The mashed potatoes were dry. Cole slaw was good. We also paid $6 for nachos that were just chips and cheese. Nothing else on them. A bit pricey if you ask me. Not planning on returning soon. Service was slow. read more
