My husband and I was looking for a different Italian place than more commercialized pizza places. The salad that came with my chicken Parmesan meal. The vegetables were very fresh and the salad was probably the best out of the whole meal. The chicken Parmesan the sauce was awful and nasty and the chicken seemed like it wasn't cooked long enough it was tough. My husband ordered the 1 topping pizza and he was absolutely disgusted. I have been to Pappy's multiple times since my initial review over eight years ago. Each visit cements the fact that this is some good food that brings your back. I have tried many things on the menu over the years from appetizers to entrees to pizza, and all of them are quite possibly some of the best items you can find in the Johnstown area. The most recent visit was one of the COVID era. If you were wondering, social distancing is enforced, plexiglass shields are up to protect from other diners, and people are full force using the take out, pick up, and drive thru window. Yes, this place has a drive thru window, so call your order in ahead of time and just swing around to the window and pick it up as you pass through. I'm not going to go much into the menu, I'm just going to dive into the item I had ordered. I waivered back and forth and just kind of blurted out what I wanted when it came time to order. I was in the mood for something hearty and something that would fill me up. I opted for their Chicken Parmigiana. The menu describes it as two chicken breast that are breaded, fried and topped with marinara and cheese, that all goes on top of a bed of spaghetti. What I pictured in my head were two moderate sized chicken breasts, not the mammoth ones I got. Each one was nearly as big as my face. Each one was fit to be a meal by itself. These were not thin at all, they had a good thickness to them. The breading was perfectly season and believe it or not, held up the crispiness. The marinara is made in house, so you know it's fresh and to top all that with that amount of cheese made me the happiest person in there. Fresh piece of garlic bread is served with this behemoth of a meal. Without having to say it, this had a good portion come home with me. I also should mention that I got the pepperoni rolls appetizer as well. And the meal came with a side salad. So that was a lot of food for me. Probably didn't help that I had a Orange Crush Float as my drink to start, so soda and ice cream. I was sufficiently full when we left here and happy to say that I had leftovers to take as my lunch to work the next day. The two reasons I can't bump this up to five stars is that no matter what time of day it is in here, it always has a gloomy feeling to it. I know that kind of gives it its charm, but it's always so dim, unless you sit in the sun room on a sunny day. The other reason is the timing that the food comes out. My meal came out quite a bit later than the pizzas that the rest of my party ordered. I kept wondering if they forgot to make my order for a time. Each time the server walked by it was so fast that I couldn't ask her what was up with my food. Oh, if you want a gut-buster of a meal, make sure to look for the Great Grand Pappy. Two grilled cheese sandwiches sub in for your bun. Totally worth the gluttonous feeling you have afterwards. read more

This location has been in business for over 40 years! That's great to see! If you visited as a kid, not much had changed with the decor. You can still view your pizza being made, there's a juke box and a large game room. Check out the Game room - some very unique "vintage" games. Really neat! We ordered two pizzas. Unfortunately one arrived way over cooked. We quickly found our waitress who happily returned the pizza for a much better one. Pappy's offers a great value - bring your family here! They have half priced pizza specials on certain nights. Such a great place to eat. When you walk into this restaurant the first thing to grab your attention is HAND TOSSED dough for the pizzas! You can watch them toss/roll your pizza! You're always seated timely, never a hassle where you sit because there's not a bad seat in the restaurant. Food is a huge arrangement from Italian dishes, pizza, and meat and potatoes. I highly suggest their buffalo chicken Stromboli. Drinks are usually bottled beers, your usual mixed drinks that aren't out of the normal, and I believe Coke products? I usually just get a water. This place has been around since I was a kid. I have great memories of going here for my birthday and getting my birthday "kit": An old timey 1890's barbershop quartet-type straw hat (actually styrofoam), a paper bow tie, and a paper Pappy mustache. The place is still there. They've added a sun-porch dining room addition many years ago. Took out the video games (dang it!!!). The "player" piano is still there although I don't know if it's still used...and yes, the wacky fun house mirror is still there. You can still watch the dudes in the kitchen making the pizzas through a giant plate glass window, but they've put in new pizza making gizmos in there and it's not as nice an experience as it used to be. What are those new giant contraptions!?!? Anyway, maybe I'm just used to living on the West Coast but the food there is way cheap. Not mind-blowing quality, but a typical family pizza/pasta place. Iceberg lettuce salads and decent pizza. Their sandwiches are good too. They still have their half-price pizza Tuesdays and I think they have a stromboli day. And you can't beat that painting of the Last Supper that they still have hanging on the fireplace inside. read more

Awesome place for families! They have a game room and an old player piano. You can watch the pizza makers flip the dough and make the pizzas. It's a bit dark in here, but I like that. They also have a sunroom if you want to eat in there. Everything is made with rich wood and accented with vintage signs. We have had a few experiences with Pappy's. (We had my daughter's wedding rehearsal here) Even with certain COVID-19 issues,service was great. We had called and placed our take-out, The lady on the phone was so personable, we felt really good about going back! At the rehearsal dinner, one of the things that we had was wings (bone-in) and this immediately cemented in my mind that only Pappy's would be the place for us to order wings. The barbecue wings were incredible, the garlic-parmesan wings were phenomenal! The order was carefully placed into the take-out bag and was safely situated in the bag.) I had not known that they had a drive through window, which made pick-up SO easy. The garlic sticks are about the same. We have tried different items off the menu. On Sundays, they have the all you can eat breasted chicken and spaghetti. This restaurant is owned by the parents of a young man I went to elementary school with and has been around as long as I can remember . However , the building is very old and not very well maintained . I ran not my childhood friend one day and he gave two fifty dollar gift cards for his families restaurant as a gift . I have one of the cards to my grandparents and used the other t order food for pickup . My grandmother did the same . The next day my grandparents were both complaining of what they suspected to be food poisoning . My children were both not feeling well the next morning and also had bad tummy troubles . I ate only a little bit of the food but I had pain and vomiting as well . Needless to say I will never eat at this location again . It's quite sad that it has gone downhill so much over the years , because I used to really enjoy going for dinner followed by a round of miniature golf at their course that is located behind the restaurant. This was a pretty good experience. There was a small issue with the pizza, but I still think 4 stars are fair. Our pizza was a little undercooked, a bit of raw dough. But, it was big enough, and we managed to set that part aside and make the best of it. The staff were very nice. It was a bit dark in the main room, but they have a sun room area if you want that. Both are nice in different ways. If I had a complaint, the tables were dirty, like a lot of them. We walked by table after dirty table, and eventually asked to sit in the sun room, where we did find a clean place. If I'm generous, maybe the place was completely full 10 minutes before we went, and everyone made one mass exit. It's possible I guess. How can I give 4 stars after saying that? The cooked part of the pizza was good. I suspect that I could have sent it back and they would have been cheery and nice about it. They really do seem like a nice bunch of people. I just have the feeling that I did not catch them at their best. I'll go back again. If I strike out, then I'll come back and lower the rating. read more

I've ate pappys many times over the years but today probably turned me off for good. Order pizza and wings and picked them up 25min later. Pizza was cold, looked and tasted like it was made hours before, wings were under cooked, slimy and caked with breading with barley any sauce. Things have seemed to be on a down hill slide the last few times I've ordered here. I've never reviewed a restaurant or any business for that matter. Not here to trash anyone but maybe some criticism might help them out in the long run. read more

We usually hit Pappy's for all-you-can-eat fried chicken for Sunday lunch. (They probably lose money on my dad.) They have great pub food, and even when they're busy, the wait staff is very attentive and friendly. They do a great job and don't foist their stress onto us! My only hesitance is with the general cleanliness ... I'll only say that it's good they keep the lights low. (Of course, my dream-come-true is to be independently wealthy and own a professional steam cleaner. Instead of having a job, I'd go around to public places by night and power-steam them clean.
