This was a technically challenging project involving a steep hill and very mature redwood roots. Standout qualities of this company are: 1. Ease of quoting process Before coming out in person, they were able to give us a ballpark price based on dimensions, fence type, and site images. This allowed me to decide whether to move forward and I thought this was really respectful of my time. Then, Dago, the owner, came for the site visit and to discuss details. 2. No bait and switch In ironing out the details, there was some miscommunication about whether staining was included. Dago was able to meet us halfway with the price increase. This honest business style continued throughout the project and no change orders or unexpected price increases happened. 3. Detail oriented Throughout the project, we discussed details such as fence posts placement relative to tree roots, post height, etc. Dago was both available in person and by email via his assistant Maria. It was also nice to have responses confirmed in writing so that things were clear and there would be no bait and switch. 4. Personality Dago is a really nice person and I enjoy speaking with his about his geriatric dogs, etc. This also helped me not feel anxious about the project, because I felt that I could trust him. For this fence, we received multiple quotes. Two companies were in the $9-10K range, another was around $12K, and an outlier was above $20K. We had a great experience with D Garcia's Landscaping. Dago and his crew removed 25 years+ old wooden retaining wall, grass, the old concrete, tree and the old fence (see the pictures) and replaced it with beautiful Basalite block-based retaining wall, Catalina Grana Toscana pavers and new fence. The marker of any review IMO is would you hire this contractor again after the project? Wholeheartedly yes. We had them do a full landscape job on our small lot - build a deck, a patio enclosure in the front, extend the sides of the driveway with new concrete, demolish a concrete pad, plant and irrigate in the front, install a French drain along the perimeter to solve our flooding issues, install pavers and river rock on the sides of the house, and build good neighbor fences on two sides of the property. I'm so happy with how the work turned out, especially for the price. The only nit I have with working with them is you have to keep a close eye on the project and make sure you give feedback immediately if it's not to the specs you wanted/discussed. That doesn't bother me much as I've found it's necessary with most contractors unless you just don't care about the details. A few small details were missed in the end - like a few screws not installed, the cuts in the deck for the railing aren't perfect, the stairs down from the deck should have been 6 inch wider given where the grass ends - little small details like that. But honestly nothing that detracts from how beautiful the yard looks now and how happy we are with the work. Also, nice people which helps during a big project! And they follow through - when we saw an issue with the fencing a few weeks after the project wrapped they came out and fixed it. read more

We bought a fixer house with a backyard straight out of a horror movie. The former owners just poured concrete everywhere and I don't know who they hired to do the tiered garden out back, but literally every one the concrete steps of the tiered garden was a different size. When I did research on Yelp for a landscaping contractor I was looking for someone who didn't just throw a little mulch and some pavers here and there, but that clearly had a team that could take on big, complex projects. It was clear from the reviews that Dago was that guy. His quote was not the most expensive but also not the cheapest. That was OK with me because I had the example in my back yard of what happens when you pick the cheapest... and it was not pretty. I just spent a few minutes looking through all of my reviews and all of Dago's so I could find my last review and update it - and was shocked to discover that despite over a decade of superior service that Dago and his team have given us, I never reviewed him on Yelp. This review is LONG overdue. As I said, Dago has been our gardening contractor for many, many years. His team has always provided excellent, timely, professional service. His gardeners have kept our gardens and lawns looking beautiful year round. They've always been accommodating for any special requests, and have also been proactive about letting me know when they discover any issues outside of the gardening realm that might need my urgent attention. Most recently, the senior gardener on his team notified us of a drainage issue that could have damaged our foundation, had it not been brought to our attention. Dago himself found a drainage and construction professional who was able to repair the damaged underground drainpipe at an extremely competitive cost. At the same time, Dago pointed out the clogged downspouts that had likely caused the flooding which had been a major cause of the drainage issue. Over the years, Dago and his team have also helped us with fence and gate repair and other household repair issues over the years. In the rare instances where he and his team could not do the work, he was always happy to send someone who could. I recommend Dago and his team full-heartedly and without hesitation. read more

Dago's crew has done so much over the years to make our yard gorgeous! They've installed our lighting, plants, mulch and stone and patio pavers (& the concrete and rebar below it) and build wood stairs into the landscape too. They've trimmed back our aloe and you can't even tell it's been so reduced (unless you saw it before). They've installed 3 huge outdoor pieces of art too. Perfection! They are helpful, clean and fast. They show up when they say they will...takes a while to get on the schedule, so plan ahead. Back in July, Dago and his fantastic crew replaced an extremely degraded pathway that was in a tricky spot (on very steep slope, lots of erosion, irrigation pipes running just under the pathway, etc). They worked quickly and cleanly and the result is beautiful and so much safer for anyone walking up to the house. I waited until the first big rains to see how well the new pathway would stand up to the water erosion problems that destroyed the last one, and I'm happy to report that it's holding up like a champ! I hired this the company about two months ago to do bi-monthly services on a couple of my East Bay properties. Initially, Dogaberto, was very communicative and diligent, but soon became just the opposite--not responding timely, no set times for my monthly services (it was always sporadic scheduling), and not adhering to our agreement of bi-monthly...during the last month before I discontinued their services (Sept. 2018), they only came once to each property. Since we agreed to bi-monthly service, I didn't know what the charges were for single services and it literally took Dogaberto two weeks to respond to my texts inquiring about the final charges for the month of September. They replaced an "urbanite" retaining wall with moss rocks and replaced a pathway that I was constantly tripping over with pavers that were well seated. Excellent job with our backyard landscaping by Dago and his crew! We had landscaping plans drawn up last year, but there are always changes that happen once you try to turn it into reality. Dago took the extra time to meet with me more than once before we even signed the contract - to make sure he was quoting what I wanted. He also made suggestions along the way (e.g., curving our patio wall so it was continuous with the pathway in the backyard) that only enhanced the design. The project was even completed on time and within my budget! Dago was great about getting approval before doing any work that wasn't on the original plan. The team was very professional and kept noise and dirt to a minimum. We had a tough design - we wanted an Arizona flagstone patio on the side of our house with a wooden landing/deck connecting it to our house (complicated by multiple stairs / levels due to the original backyard hardscaping). Our backyard space needed a lot of work so we reached out to a number of landscaping companies that we found on Yelp. After interviewing a few companies, it was clear that D Garcia's Landscaping was the perfect fit for our project. We needed to replace some failing retaining walls and wanted more space for recreation and gardening. Dagoberto, Gabriel and the crew delivered a product beyond all of our expectations! They were thoughtful and creative in executing the plan and kept us in the loop on any project tweaks that came up. They built us a new deck, installed two paver patios, installed one patio of decomposed granite, installed/ upgraded the drainage system and installed retaining walls and steps. I can't recommend them enough! Some supply chain issues slowed down the project, as well as some rainy days...but the whole time Dagoberto and his staff were always professional and honest. i work with contractors all day long, professionally and for personal reasons. even so, its not an easy thing to hire a contractor to do work for you. unless money is no option and you hire a designer, that hires their tier one contractors that works with your project manager.... you are left with some hard choices and hand holding. If you can afford to pay $100,000 for a $35,000 job, im happy for you. im not one of those people. on the opposite end, you have contractors that are shady, dont communicate on a timely process, or worse, they just run off with your money. the wife found D. Garcia's Landscape, super lucky she did. between the handful of contractors we picked out for this project, we felt Dago, the owner, was the most reasonable, most knowledgeable, and basically, the person we felt the most comfortable with. d. garcia seem to be that right balance between reasonably priced and great work. makes sense, dago has been in the industry for decades and this is HIS business. as a small business owner myself, i can say that the ones that have a business open for more than a decade, we are a special breed. it takes a lot to run a business, but even more so for this long. we had a particularly tricky retaining wall and drainage situation... no problem. we had some interesting aspects to our rare level yards in the hills, no problem, redo deck, no problem.... professional, good work, great crew, reasonably priced? easy choice. read more

Mr Garcia replied immediately to my email, arranged a time to do an in person visit w/ masks and distance to assess the job, and got back to me with a written estimate about a week later. i heard back from a few others, who said they were not interested in our job. we felt his bid was reasonable and very clear, he's bonded, licensed and insured, and the specifics were there, with measurements, how he handled contingencies, etc. we let him know wed be open to having the work done as soon as possible, but we were in line for 6 weeks out. He had an unexpected slot open up and the crew started the next week! They were hardworking, considerate and polite, cleaning up at the end of each day and they just got so much work done we were blown away. we realized there was no way we could have done the work on our own (we'd considered) and were very lucky that we'd hired them. Extra nice touches they installed were a beautiful little rock wall bed along our side yard, a pretty little pad of pavers for our bbq, very study wood beams to make a "step-up" to the veggie beds and the way they were able to grade the whole yard to unify it. Initially, our front and back yards were in poor shape.  The front yard was covered in sand and weed-infested.  The backyard was mainly unleveled dirt mounds with trash buried underneath.  After removing the trash and excavating the ground ourselves, we turned to Dago and his crew to redo our front and back yard, to something that was relatively maintenance free (artificial turf in back and a hardscape with a few drought resistant plants in front).  We came up with the design on our own and gathered several different estimates.  While Dago's rates were not the cheapest, he was the most thorough and professional; other landscapers/contractors either took weeks to respond or stopped responding altogether.  From start to finish, everything took a little over 2 weeks.  The crew consisted mainly of 2 workers, sometimes more.  Throughout it all, Dago remained in constant contact with us, including frequent drop-ins.  Also, any questions regarding details were quickly addressed via email or in person.  Everything came out perfect and we couldn't be happier with the finished product. read more

He dug out the 1970's sprinkler system and installed a new system with high quality sprinkler heads in front yard and back. He laid down the gopher mesh we asked for to prevent gophers from ruining our new front yard.
