What a surprising treat. I had Court on a Wednesday at the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point and there the food truck was. We were able to order a great deal of food, for a reasonable price that came out in about 10 minutes. My law partner was born and raised in Puerto Rico so this was an extra cool thing for us. We will go back! He was able to show myself and my parents some of his home's meals, and we were so pleased. Everything is prepared from scratch. My law partner said not his Grandmother's cooking, but a solid attempt. The fried plantains were just a little salty and cooked to perfection. The rellenos de papa were off the charts delicious and special. I have never had anything like that before, and we are craving it again. They are fried mashed potato balls with a tasty meat filling. SO good. The empanadas are golden and crisp, their meat filling was delicious as well. I have to say the slow cooked pork with rice was amazing and an absolute must try. The meat was tender and succulent. It comes on a bed of home made rice that is amazing. If you spot the truck, stop, you will not be disappointed! read more

So UYesterday while my Lady was coming home she seen Da Portable Rican Truck over at AUTOZONE (165th and Columbia, Hammond, IN) Well I said go ahead and get it as I was still interested in giving these guys a try. Well She ended up getting 2 Island Tours: comes with the following: 1 Relleno de Papa, 1 Pastelillo/Empananda (in this case they ran out of the Pastelillo, so we got 1 Empananda each, 2 tostones, PR Rice, and a small portion of Lechon. I will be honest coming from a Puerto Rican Heritage as I am a mix culture, I have sampled many types of cooking in my life, but honestly got to say, I am unsure if this is how they always cook, if the cooks are smokers(usually no taste buds / sense of taste issues), or if when cooking they are not tasting what goes in, too make sure there is flavor. Basically on our dish someone was heavy handed with the salt. With my health I have to really watch the salt, usually Puerto Rican food is not salty like this, but it will always depend on who is cooking the food. So to better review this I will relist everything and give my review / opinion as best as I can: 1 Relleno de Papa : The outer part of the papa was good, you could taste the potato and this is how it should be made, but the meat and relleno on the inside was too salty to really taste. Empananda : The shell seems fried okay, but the ground beef on the inside was too salty to determine what types of flavors were used. 2 tostones: They looked like they were fired properly with golden look to them, but I could see the salt caked on them, sadly too salty to taste, should be lightly salted instead or not at all, as they are fine with nothing on them if done correctly. PR Rice: There are many ways and styles to PR Rice, what I had was your yellow rice with black small beans(forgot the name of them), but if I just had the rice and nothing else I could tell you the rice was ok, when I say ok I do not mean bad or just good, I would say average form what I am use too. (I am use to tasting fresh sofrito in most meals) Lechon: Well I am unsure where they get their Lechon, if the pork is grass fed or hormone fed As that would factor in on things. Now this was another issue and hard to taste as the lechon / pork was too salty to taste, but as far as everything else is was moist not tough like some other meats out there. I am tempted to give them a try again, but if all their food is that salty I honestly would not be able to do so, as it would jeopardize my health. read more

I previously had their jibarito sandwich at a festival food truck and it was good. I was very excited to check out this place and since I was near the area, I decided to check it out. I started with the island sampler, it was good but very small. The tostones were too hard. I got the steak jibarito and I was not too happy with the hardness of the plantains and the steak being cut too thick. It makes it hard to eat this sandwich. The seasoning was good and the rice was great! I would have to say the Puerto Rican rice was the best part of my plate. The sandwich was like $14, which is high for a jibarito. read more

Very lovely place. Get there early it gets very very crowded. First food was very very tasty. The Decour in the place is very lovely and you almost feel like you're sitting in a Puerto Rican street. I do wish they would serve alcohol but maybe that's not a easy thing. read more

Absolutely amazing. You know it's good when it everything down the the picadillo in the pastelillos tastes like my mom or grandma made it. I'll be finding every reason to come back when I get a craving and don't feel like making PR food myself. The service was a little slow but that's understandable with any new restaurant. The customer service from the servers and owners was exceptional. I love that they made the decor look like Viejo San Juan. I can't wait to see this place continue to expand and grow. read more

The food is immaculate! I have grown up with homemade authentic Puerto Rican food so I tend to be really picky when it comes to purchasing it. But, this establishment impressed me. I will be returning. It's fairly priced and service is amazing. 10/10 I recommend. read more

Yelp ratings are sometimes too simplistic. While a nice place with good dishes, it's hard to classify it a winner. Pros: Arroz con gandules Fried potato Pastelitos Tostones-ok Cons: Carne guisada-not bad, not great Came across this place by chance. It's a nice way to break away from the string of common food chains and strip mall restaurants. The reviews seem to indicate a lot of fans which I can understand. As far as Puerto Rican food goes, it's usually pretty great but is open to interpretation like many other things. The best dishes we had were the rice and pastelitos (empanadas). The naming is interesting because I'm used to P.R. pastelitos being a darker, rich version of tamales. Good luck finding tostones made the way you like because they're usually on the oily side but they're ok here. I found the carne guisada to be on the dry side despite it being a stew. I didn't order the jibarito because (1) that's a difficult dish to pull off correctly and (2) I didn't expect the price to justify what I was expecting to receive. Assumptions-sorry. The atmosphere is clean, spacious, and attractive. Overall a good experience but the price was on the high side for what I normally experience to be an economical food choice. I definitely would like to see this place be successful but I would recommend raising the artisanal quality of the food. read more

Scouting out the area we drive right past and made a u-turn to give them a try. We should have kept driving. The corn with doritos crushed on top and a very watery sauce leaves a sour taste in your mouth and we had our fill of it after just a spoonful or two. They deep fry the entree which was some empanada over a rice that was nothing but grease and over fried. Sadly to say they are not great ambassadors for the food network and should remove it from the truck. We tossed everything out and found somewhere else to fill our tummies. At least we paid the $2 for a fountain drink to clear our taste buds. read more

Honestly, I went twice.The plátano and the meat way thick.The first time i honestly felt like I paid too much.Maybe because the food didn't taste how I expected. The second time I went I ordered the same thing a steak Jibarito, Meat and Plátano was way too thick. The second time I took someone,SHE! also ordered a Jibarito the platano and the meat is still the same. The Jibarito didn't taste how we expected. We recently dined at this Portage brick-and-mortar location of a group known regionally for its food trucks. The dining room is unique: Its walls are painted with beautiful murals of actual locations in Puerto Rico -- real streets, forests, waterfalls, etc. The food is authentic and freshly prepared, though fairly simple and basic. The service is prompt, attentive, friendly, and helpful. I am forced to deduct one star here because of the high price. We found the prices to be at the extreme upper limit of what we're willing to pay for this type of food (roughly 25% higher than we would have expected if you showed us the menu and asked us to guess the prices). Very high marks for ambience and service; not so much for price/value ratio. read more

Let me preface this by saying I have made fun of my husband for two years for only going to the Lake and Porter fairs for Da Portable Rican's food. Then one day I tried a Jibarito sandwich. Lord have mercy it was delicious. Inside the food truck I saw family working together to make the most amazing food I have ever put into my face hole. And that rice! Please. Go here. Eat here. OMG pork jibarito! I had the pleasure of experiencing their food truck and I was not disappointed. Their roasted pork jibarito, a sandwich where plantains are used instead of bread, was fantastic!
