On a recent trip to see my brother, they took me to this place which is their new favorite. I loved the vibe and decor. My sister-in-law isn't an outdoorsy person, so we ate inside. I would have enjoyed the lovely patio, but it also looked like it was about to rain! Our server was very nice and gave some excellent recommendations. Instead of chips and salsa, we were served their potato flautas. It was a nice change of pace. I usually fill up on chips and salsa and can't finish my main entree. For the table, my brother ordered a house special entree - Mariscada Valero's - which is a variety of sautéed seafood served with tortillas. It was perfect for sharing with our four person group. For my main dish, I ordered the skirt steak tacos with coconut rice on the side. I love coconut and I love rice. Who knew they go together so well! The skirt steak was cooked perfectly. I had my leftovers for breakfast and the skirt steak was still tender! I did try the lobster tacos (my sister-in-law's favorite). They were yummy - although a bit spicy. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it! My husband and I went for dinner last Saturday and really enjoyed it. First of all, it is really a beautiful place. The servers were on top of everything and our server in particular never let a cup get empty and whenever my husband needed another beer, she was right on top of us. She was excellent. My husband had the chicken enchiladas and rice. I kept stealing his rice because it was so good. I am craving it today as a matter of fact. I had the nachos from the appetizer menu and it was gigantic and delicious. They give you sweet potato flautas, instead of chips and salsa when you sit down and they were delicious as well. We went in October so the outside was closed because it was a bit too cold to sit outside. But in the summer, they have music outside and dancing. We will definitely be going back. read more

5 of us had dinner on a cool, rainy Saturday night. First time here for all of us. Restaurant was maybe 1/2 full. Our server was either new or poorly trained. Waited 10 minutes before she approached. She didn't know the drink menu and we waited more than 20 minutes for her return. Then we noticed why. Not only is she waiting tables, she's acting as bartender for her tables, as were the rest of the servers. We found out later that it's the owner's idea to not have a dedicated bartender. Absolutely ridiculous. After she dropped our drinks she took off to a different table. Can we order appetizers? She finally returned, took the app order and then went back to her bartending duties. Cutting to the chase...after we ate our entrees she finally checked back. Way too late to address our concerns about the food. About the menu...way overpriced for what was offered for marginally tasting food. Asked her to divide the check by 3 charging the two couples and the single what was ordered. Big mistake as she tried several times to get it right. Overall it was a bad experience and will not return. Too many options in Valparaiso to settle for this disappointment. read more

I wish I could give a great review of this establishment, but unfortunately, we never got past the menu. We were excited to try an upscale Mexican restaurant and drove ten miles out of our way to find the place. For some strange reason, Yelp sent us four blocks away from the location and it took at least 20 minutes of walking around town to finally locate it. At last, we walked in and were seated at a table. There were only three other occupied tables and at least five employees working the bar and the tables, so we reviewed the menus, anticipating a fast meal. Shortly, we were served a complementary flautas appetizer, which was great and seemed to indicate we were in for a real treat this evening. After finishing the appetizer, we looked for the waitress to get our order in. And waited, and waited.... We discovered she was behind the bar, checking her socials on her phone, flirting with another waiter, drying glasses. Not once did she ever look up to see if we were ready. We decided to see how long she would ignore us, but after about twenty minutes we finally just got up and walked out. Not one of the five employees in the room paid us any attention as we made our way to the door. So, in conclusion, if you're fortunate enough to put in an order and get your food, you may find this a pretty great place. It seems many do. Wow were we impressed by how upscale this place was. I picked a restaurant walking distance from downtown to eat at while seeing the holiday lights (techincally this was walking distance, but in the dark and cold my 6 year old was unimpressed by the walk). Inside is lovely, and there was live music on Saturday evening. We felt comfortable being there with a kid, but it also looked like a few tables were out for a date night. The music was a little loud, so we chose to sit in the back where it was fine. It was really cold though. The food was delicous. Started with complimentary potatoe flautas, which were fine. (They had sour cream on them which I hate. I wiped it off, but who knows how much more I would have liked them without it.) -Guacomole trio with traditional, pineapple, and mango guacomole's. All of them were great, but the pineapple was trully outstaning. I plan to return here because of how amazing the pineapple guacomole was. -Vegetarian fajitas with flour tortillas (no sour cream) and they were great, with a side of coconut rice which was just okay to me. -Kids quesadilla with Mexican rice, great expect that it had sour cream and crumbled cheese on top. This is great for fancy adults, but picky kids it's easier if they know exactly what to expect. Mexican rice was great. --Mojito was fantastic. Great service! Delicious food, and lovely space! The margarita menu was very confusing to start. I asked for a shot of grand Marnier to add to my margarita and the server gave me grab gala instead. When I said I'm sorry I wanted grand Marnier she said that goes in the Cadillac margarita and I ordered the ultra premium. I was confused bc I ordered the shot separately so that shouldn't have mattered. The lime sour is not home made it's from a bottle so it wasn't good made the margarita super average. This restaurant doesn't give complimentary chips and salsa like every other Mexican restaurant. Paid for chips and queso and for a 3 oz side of salsa was $3. Way overpriced. Went there this weekend and it was a disappointment. Our neighbors went last week and said it was good so we thought we would try it. The margaritas I would say were dead last when compared to the other Mexican restaurants in the area. We had the fajitas for 2 and another disappointment. The chicken was okay, the beef was tough and chewy and the shrimp was tasteless. The price as by far the highest in the area. Staff was friendly and the place looked good. Very nice setup. I saw pics of this place come across my Facebook feed and I've been waiting to try. We ended up having to be in Valparaiso and , so we stopped around 4 PM Before the dinner rush. The prices are higher but it's so worth the elevated ingredients and the food was just worth it. The Barbacoa tacos were the best and meatiest I've ever had. They bring out some complimentary flautas instead of chips. The house margaritas were on special that evening and very fresh and delicious! The coconut rice. Omg the COCONUT RICE! So amazing! Veleros in Valparaiso really disappoints me. when it was on calumet it was one of my favorites restaurants. We ate there often. We have tried the new location 3 times and all were terrible. I believe we're done now and from the looks of the place, so is Veleros. It is only a matter of time before they close. I don't understand how the owner would invest all that money for the location and then just let the place totally go down hill. There are so many negatives I don't even know where to start. On all three visits our food was cold, the place is being run by teenagers who don't give a damn about anything and they have probably the worst bartender I've ever had. My 'ultra premium' margarita was made with 99cent triple sec and ruined the entire drink. The food has really gone downhill - all tasteless. What a waste of a fantastic restaurant. read more

My friend and I decided to try a new place, and needless to say we were both very disappointed, wont be returning, and definitely would not recommend this to our friends. Luckily we were starving and wanted to try a new place other than our regular spots. First, they made us sit outside, luckily it was warm when we arrived but we left as soon as we paid bc it was getting windy and we were cold. But the moral is we weren't even asked if we wanted to sit inside and there was no one inside. We ordered the chips and salsa, look at the pic. The ratio is WAY OFF. Needless to say we asked for more salsa and it was $5 extra. On top of that, the "fresh housemade" chips must have been made last week and left out bc they were chewy. I got the lobster burrito which was $27, not worth it, and small. So for a Dr.pepper, chips and salsa, and a burrito, I paid $41. I'm not sure how this place stays in business or how it has 4.2 stars, but like I said I won't be back, and I'd recommend going to just about any other one of the great Mexican places there are in valpo. read more

Unfortunately we won't be back again due to a couple things. 1 ~ The pricing is INSANE for Valparaiso, it's priced as if you were dinning downtown Chicago. 2 ~ The portion sizes were extremely small and you are also charged for chips & salsa if you want a fresh basket. 3 ~ For the price of a 24oz. margarita I should have walked out of there with somewhat of a buzz and my wife would have definitely felt buzzed but unfortunately they must be EXTREMELY watered down because we both walked out feeling like we didn't drink at all.. Ordered carryout which I was told 15-20 minutes. So after waiting 15 minutes I drove there. Once I arrived I was told "2 minutes" and my order would be ready, 22 minutes later I was finally given my food. What made matters worse is that it wasn't good either. I don't mind paying for a good meal but $18 for 3 street size tacos is a little crazy. Overpriced in margaritas drinks as well. My first two visits went well. Like I said I'll pay for a good meal. I know I'm paying for the location but this isn't Chicago. But this last visit the server was RUDE! I get it, it's busy. Crown Point has the fair going on so lots of people in town. You would think they would welcome the business. I think she screwed up on the drinks. Gave us the basic and uncharged us for the special we asked for. Imagine a collision between the Mexican states of El Pueblo and Chihuahua.....this is it. The restaurant was super clean and comfortable. I loved the lay-out and the seating arrangement. They suggested a certain drink which our teen didn't like and when we asked for another flavor they took that one but still charged for both. Had we known we would have kept it and seen who else may like it. Everything is extra here so keep that in mind. $3.50 for a kids sprite, $7 for a kids cheese quesadilla that they cover in stuff so the kid won't want it. Truly fantastic food! Best modern Mexican food I've had anywhere in the US. A very special place. We shared the coconut shrimp appetizer which was crunchy and not greasy just full of flavor, served with a wonderful dipping sauce and some fresh veggies sliced thinly as a small salad to the side. So delicious! Both of us had one of the house specialties for dinner: steak filet grilled perfectly to our order, garnished with grilled bell peppers and onions that still had a bit of a crunch (and not limp and overcooked like they can get elsewhere), coconut rice, fried plantains, black beans, and a side salad with a garlicy citrusy vinaigrette. Seriously I was blown away by all the flavors and the attention to the presentation of everything, and cooked perfectly. I want to go back and try everything on the menu, especially the fish dishes which look amazing. We also had the tres leches desert: a huge cake with strawberry sauce and topped with a giant sliced fresh strawberry. I didn't think i had room to even taste it but it was just as fresh and delicious as the meal. I walked out feeling so happy...and and so stuffed!
