We arrived at 1pm on a Thursday afternoon and there were a few tables eating in. There was a steady stream of takeout. We ordered the pork cutlet with gravy and rice. The pork was breaded and fried very well. It was not too greasy at all. Side dishes are on the place served. They weren't that special. There's some sweet corn, cabbage with mayo/ketchup or Thousand island sauce and some macaroni with a mayo sauce. Rice portion was small in comparison to the 2 pieces of pork cutlet they give. The gravy is tasty but the fast food made from a powder kind of tasty. The Kim chi fried rice was tasty, fried well with no grains of rice stick together. It had a nice meaty flavour to it. This location for Dae-Ji definitely has better quality than other ones I've gone to so far (Metrotown and Downtown locations). I've had their meals and fried chicken many times before, but I never tried their fish cutlets until recently. Even though the food was delivered, none of the cutlets were soggy - they maintained their crisp exterior and soft interior. I knew the pork cutlet set would be good, but the fish one was surprisingly delicious. The tartar sauce they give on the side is also very tasty. I'm not always craving the rice, so I tend to swap for their fries. They're also quite delicious - similar to the ones you would find at Costco's food court. Many dishes include a small pile of coleslaw, macaroni salad, and some tasty pickled veggies for a palate cleanser. All delicious! Portions are generous, but I'm a big guy, so I always add an extra cutlet with sauce. Beer sometimes. I'm totally stuffed after that. First impressions, it's not that big of a restaurant and quite narrow. We walked in for dinner around 730pm and the right side of the restaurant was packed. The whole left side of the restaurant was empty, but every table had dishes left on them from the last seating. We walked in and weren't acknowledged for a couple minutes. They were very busy serving tables and taking orders. You could tell they were under staffed. We were asked how many of us and still had to wait for a table to be cleared for us. Ordered: Original Dae-Ji Pork Cutlet - really crispy, tender, and juicy pork. Very tasty gravy, went really well together. Curry Chicken Cutlet on Rice with Miso Soup - flavourful curry, but lacked chicken. There was maybe 5 little pieces of chicken in the curry. Spicy Sweet and Sour Chicken (bone in) - really good flavour, not too spicy, big portion (whole chicken I believe). The fried potato slices, pickled radish, and shredded cabbage go well with the chicken, as the sauce will be too over powering by itself. Service was the downfall of this dining experience. When we were seated, we were surrounded by dirty dishes from all the neighbouring tables. It took almost 40mins before we received our first dishes. A couple that sat down after us, and ordered after us got their food well before us and they ordered fried chicken as well. If my wife hadn't asked for them to check on our order, I don't know how much longer we would be waiting. I'm sure they make the chicken to order, but this seemed excessive. Dae-Ji is a popular Vancouver-based Korean cutlet house that specializes in deep-fried cutlets of various meats as well as hamburger steaks (similar to Hamburg steaks). The location on North Road in Burnaby is on the second floor of a busy mini mall just south of Lougheed Hwy. The interior here is fairly spacious and it wasn't very busy during my weekday lunch hour sojourn. The decor here is more basic than high-end with plastic cups and water jugs at the table. I wound up ordering their Cheese Hamburger Steak ($13.99) which comes with 2 hefty portions of hamburger steak topped with cheese and accompanied with rice, macaroni salad, corn, crunchy cabbage, pickled radish, and gravy. The thick hamburger steaks were quite filling but a bit on the dry side in the middle (nothing that a dose of gravy couldn't fix). I did like the cheesy pull on top of the hamburger but I would have preferred if the cheese was on the inside of the hamburger instead of on top. On a subsequent visit about 3 months later, I noticed that the restaurant was much busier during the weekday lunch hour. The thing that I like about this restaurant is that you can mix-and-match your order and I wound up ordering their Combo A ($15.99) with a Mushroom Hamburger Steak and a Shrimp and Cheese Pork Cutlet with chili sauce. This meal also comes with their regular assortment of sides such as macaroni salad, corn, crunchy cabbage topped with a Thousand Island type of dressing, pickled radish, and rice. The thing about Dae-Ji is they stick to what they know and what they know best is how to make deep-fried cutlets and hamburger steaks. The Mushroom Hamburger Steak is thick and juicy (almost in the shape of a large meatball) but tender. Meanwhile, their cutlet is perfectly fried with a nice crispness on the outside and then covered with melted cheese. If the chili sauce wasn't spicy enough for you, they top off the pork cutlet with jalapeño slices which gives you a serious kick. I guess Combo A is my go-to pick here... I like having the ability to pick and choose different things. Here's their Pineapple Hamburger Steak and Pizza Pork Cutlet as well as the Pineapple Hamburger Steak and Curry Chicken Cutlet. I have quickly decided on kimchi pork fried rice with a side of curry cutlet in about 5 minutes. I've waited for the waitress to come back and take my order, she passed me twice to serve other table and about 15mins passes by I've grown impatient and had to flag another waitress down. My food arrived in 15mins. The quality of the food is good; the chicken cutlet breading is crispy and just the right thickness, the meat is soft and juicy. The kimchi fried rice is spicy and good portion with an egg on top. The rice is slightly on the wet side, i prefer it drier. It also came with a bowl of yummy miso soup. All in all, I think the food is delicious and the price is cheap. I recommend anyone who enjoy cutlets to try it out, I will come back for different style cutlet in the near future. I first tried Daeji Pork Cutlet House at their downtown location about three years ago. Since then, prices have gone up a bit, portions have gotten a wee bit smaller, but the food is still good and filling. I ordered the pork cutlet with gravy sauce, salad, corn, and rice. It was delicious but I would have preferred having a little less gravy on the pork. The pork cutlet itself was nice and crispy and not greasy. After we had ordered, we were given a large bottle of water and two cups. I liked that we were given water without having to ask. However, once we got our food, we were pretty much ignored. We fully-enjoyed our previous dining experience at Dae Ji, so during a recent stay in the area, decided to return - this time for dinner. As during our previous visit, service was friendly and accommodating. We ordered two different cutlet meals - the pork cutlet w/gravy, and the fish cutlet w/tarter sauce - and wanted to share the two. The server had the cook put one piece of each, on the two plates - so we were able to share the two kinds of cutlets, without having to move the pieces about ourselves. So we got a taste of each brought to our table, along with the condiments, etc., to match each. We appreciated that accommodation. But how was the food this time? Ouch!! It was definitely not as we remember when we dined there last. The meat/fish in the cutlets was thin, and the coatings rather thick and greasy -- the very opposite of the preparations we were served there last time. Might it have had something to do with the time we dined? We did lunch last time, and were there when the place first opened -- the cutlets were plump, and so well-prepared. We did a very early dinner this time -- did we get re-heated cutlets from lunch? From their taste and texture, I sure suspect they could have been. Can't go wrong as the cutlets are fried and they're super crispy. Also provide a good portion of rice, small mac salad, and a small bunch of refreshing shredded cabbage with dressing. My experience at Dae Ji on North Road was exquisite. We walked to Dae Ji from Lougheed SkyTrain and came in for dinner. There were many photos of the food on the menu (and on the walls), which made our selection even more expedient. After much debate, we ordered from rice menu because it offered miso soup. We ordered the curry pork cutlet, which was covered in a rich meaty sauce, and spicy pork tenderloin, which had lean cuts of pork and a delicious mix of cabbage and kimchi (the spiciness of the kimchi was incredibly appetizing). Both had a decent amount of rice patted and concealed beneath the meat. Both of our dishes were served with the warming miso soup, refreshing salad, and crunchy pickled daikon. The dishes were so appetizing (or I was so hungry) that I ate it before I could take a picture! Nice presentation of food, comfy, authentic Korean atmosphere, and not to mention the delicious food... Everything on the menu is really good with great portions. I get the pizza pork cutlet a lot, and it seems like they recently got more items on the menu such as fried chicken. I like trying new places so dropped by on a Wednesday night. This seems to be an Asian specialty restaurant kind of like a slightly upscale Wendy's. As many of you know, This neighborhood is a very Korean part of town, so there are plenty of places to get your Kimchi fix; however, if you want something different and for great value, check this out. Since they have opened, I have been a returning customer every time I'm around the area, and from time to time I would specifically make a trek out there. The favored dishes at Daeji is obviously their Pork Cutlet, but don't be fooled, because their hamburger patties, and curry is also great dishes. Most great places isn't always defined by the quality of the food and the atmosphere, sometimes it is about passion. The atmosphere itself is super family-restauranty and comfortable, and the portions are really really big. I always get the fish cutlet (so soft so yummy) and I can never finish it. I ordered the Dae-Jj combo A which comes with a choice of any 2 pieces of cutlet or hamburger steak wth rice salad and miso soup. I order the pork cutlet and chicken cutlet and I was in heaven!! Pork Cutlet, is one of my favourite comfort foods. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside! Top it off with sauce, add rice on the side and some veggies, and you've got a world beater. In case you didn't know, Daeji means, pig in Korean. And true to their name, they serve up a wide variety of pork dishes, well, in cutlet form. They also have dishes like Chicken cutlet, fried chicken, fried rice, burger cutlets and so on. While this wasn't the best pork cutlet I've ever had (that honour goes to Saboten in Seoul, Korea). That being said, this place was solid. The dishes my brother and I tried: Cheese Pork Cutlet Kimchi Fried Rice Fried Chicken Cheese Pork Cutlet: This dish comes with two cutlets, and is good for sharing. It comes topped off with melted cheese and gravy on top, along with plain rice and a shredded cabbage salad that you would find in most Korean restaurants. Think of it like coleslaw (not like KFC) without the mush. There's plenty to like here, the cutlet is crisp and cooked just right. The pork was good. Not too thick, not too thin. Kimchi Fried Rice: It was ok, I think I can do better at home though, but that might not be the case with other people. You do get large portions, and it is topped of with a fried egg as well. This makes a nice supplement to the plain white rice that comes with the cutlet in case you want to forego that option. In my opinion, if you split the cutlet and the rice, that's a ton of food for not a lot of money. Fried Chicken: Ahh, Koreans and fried chicken. It's almost the national dish, well, fried chicken and beer that is. Anyhow, we ordered the fried chicken on a whim because, A.)we love fried chicken B.) we were curious how they would serve it up C.) we just had to compare it to other places that served FC. Ordered it bone out, and it was interesting. Tastes how KFC popcorn chicken would taste if it was actually good. That being said, you can tell it was not their specialty. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but there are better places to have fried chicken, especially given the locale of North Road. The way I see it is, they had to have fried chicken because of how popular it is. Think of it like this, back in the day, X-FM and the Fox used to play Eminiem despite being alternative/rock stations. Just too popular to pass up. Overall, the service was good and quick. They take debit/credit. I think with the three items it worked out to about $20.00 with tip for each person. It would have been a lot cheaper without the chicken, but I can't say I'm sorry I tried it. The owner and the waitress stared us down wanting us to just leave so we paid and left the place. Not family friendly when you have children. So I chose this as a first restaurant back home to visit after spending a year abroad, and there was a mouse. In the restaurant. As soon as I saw the mouse I informed the server immediately, however all they did was to apologize and explain how the mice were coming from the restaurant next doors. They didn't try to do something with the mouse in order to calm us down, while it was running around right next to our table. Only after I said, "maybe someone should catch it or something", they took some actions, but while the mouse was running away it ran over my friend's foot.
