Summer time delight!! Dairy Depot has the best soft serve in the Rockford area. They offer seasonal flavors and big portions. The current seasonal offering is butter pecan. The dipped and crunch cones bring back childhood nostalgia. They also offer a doggie cone which is a very small cone with vanilla soft serve. Note side street parking, but they also have parking on the other side too. Great time to just take an ice cream break with friends and family. read more

This has always been our favorite spot to get ice cream in the Rockford area. Best soft serve around, and a great value too! We love their rotating flavored ice creams, dipped cones, "twinklecoat" (like a sugar/sprinkle/nut coating), and the peanut butter cup/Oreo flurry. Also they finally have vegan flavors!! If you can't eat dairy (like me) go for the "Dole Whip." I got the lemon/lime twist cone. Outside seating, and we really appreciate that they're pet-friendly! Ask for a pup cup if your dog wants to get in on the action. Service is fast but the employees are super nice. Just an FYI, cash only! Also, if you tip them they ring a fun bell. A classic spot that I hope our family can come to for many years to come. read more

Great ice cream. They seem a little unorganized this summer. Also, Usually they have great music playing over the speakers but today they had live music- it was crazy loud and 90% of the songs were total downer songs (doesn't really fit with the fun summer ice cream vibe people are used to). I know I sound like an old fart but you couldn't even have a conversation this guy's sound was so loud. The staff is questionable. For the second time in a row, I've ordered a dipped cone and the ice cream fell off from the dip being too hot and the staff member caught it in their bare hand and plopped it into a cup with their hand. Best soft serve in town! We love the train crossing decor and that most of the ice cream is between $2-4, even for the sundaes. They have a new flavor ever week, though I never try them because I always get the same thing.... Swirl cone with twinklecote. The twinklecote is awesome and you must try it!! They have soft serve, sundaes, milkshakes, banana splits and much more! All seating is outdoors but they do have a huge tent covering most of the picnic tables. There is no bathroom but you can ask and they will let you in to use the employee one. They have a foot pump water sink to wash up afterwards. There is also a big grass area for the kids to run around in. Parking in on the street unless you make yourself through the neighborhood to the parking lot in the back, which is kind of hidden. This is a cute little ice cream (soft serve frozen yogurt) shop in which you walk up to a window and order. It seems that this place has been around for years (only open for the summer season though), and it's got quite the fan base. There was a long line for the place when we showed up a little before closing time. There's a huge selection to choose from: frozen yogurt, sundaes, root beer floats, and I think they even have a different 'special' flavor each week. (It's currently "Dreamsicle".) I'm a fan! The prices were good, and everyone was friendly - the workers, the other people in line! The best part is that they have ice cream in "mini-sized cones - they're not even as tall as my thumb! It's perfect when you overeat at dinner beforehand, and then decide you still want ice cream. Also, they're free for kids! read more

This review will be no surprise to any of the Locals, but Dairy Depot is hands down the best Ice Cream Ship in the Nation; hands down! I can say this because I live in Southern California, but Dairy Depot is always on our list when visiting Loves Park, IL. My Dad started bringing me here when I was young, and now I'm 55! Took my son there yesterday and we noticed some big changes. The ice cream itself is no longer the same consistency: it is now very airy and seems insubstantial compared to before. While it still tastes great, it felt like you were getting less of the "good stuff" than you used to. Also, the menu prices used to include tax so you knew your total before going up to the window -- no longer the case so be prepared to pay above the menu price. read more

The Depot is open again (2013) with the same great owners and staff. Still the best damn soft serve in town. It is shocking to get a sundae made with cashews and realize there are not just chips and pieces of nuts in it, but the whole nut. Always the best ingredients. My puppy loves the plain vanilla cone! Dairy Depot is a great place to stop on a hot day and have some great ice cream. Which is exactly what a friend and I did one day after dinner. This place is usually packed after dinner so the lines are fairly long, but move pretty quick. They have a weekly soft serve flavor and have all the typical summer ice cream treats. Prices are good and there's seating with shade to sit outside and enjoy your treats. Definitely worth the stop. read more
