Wow.......what happened!!!!!! We have been going to Dairy Freeze in North Ridge for 20+ years. Even being a little away from home, it was worth the drive to go and have their ice cream and food. Through the years we took our kids there. Today we took our kids and our grandkids there. The usual treat would be ice cream with fresh peanuts and dipped in chocolate. Every time would be a delight! Today would be the first time since COVID. We were all looking forward to get our treats. This time we would have dinner also. The food was good as usual. But the cost of the food was still $$$$. We'll time for ice cream. OMG.... What happened. The vanilla ice cream was just an ok. BUT the chocolate they dipped into was......eating wax. Hardly any chocolate taste. We never had that wax taste before. Even the peanuts put on it were different. It was horrible. It was so bad that it will be the last time we go. So sad to something really great to go downhill....,. The only way we would go back is for them to go back to the way it was. So I went here yesterday with my boyfriend, who is from Kingsville originally. We live in Florida, so it's pretty safe to say we are far from home. While visiting his family for Canadian Thanksgiving, we had a little bit of time before our flight, so he decided to show me this little legendary gem in Essex. His grandmother took his mother there when she was a kid and so the tradition passed on. To say I was impressed is an understatement. The exterior is vintage and quaint, taking you back to the old drive up/in burger and shake shacks, mixed with the feeling of being welcomed into someones home. A great feature of the layout is the fact that they accommodate to all seasons with their seating. There was an indoor and outdoor section for seating, (the "indoor" section was a sort of Sun Room that had clear paneling to keep heat in) They also had a very pretty garden out the back with lovely statues, and a large yard to host what I would assume is events, and doubles as a great place for kids to run around. It's great to think of all the memories each generation has enjoyed here! The best part is that when we got there, the service is incredible. They were open during the holiday, and had 3 very friendly people ready and happy to take our order. My boyfriend has a severe peanut allergy, and they were happy to accommodate him, granted they aren't 100% peanut allergy friendly, but still washed their hands and prepared his Boston Cooler (a kind of milkshake with vanilla ice cream and Vernor's Ginger Ale, delish!) with caution. I got the strawberry malt/milk shake, and anyone who knows me knows I'm an avid fan of Chik-fil-a's strawberry milkshake. THIS ONE RIVALS IT. It was made from fresh strawberries grown from that town, and tasted better than any pre-paid fast food junk. I'm pretty disappointed that I won't be able to come back for a bit, seeing as I'm on the other side of the continent. I definitely recommend it! We didn't purchase any food, but when we passed by the indoor seating on our way to the garden, we spotted a group chowing down on onion rings, and they looked divine. If you grew up anywhere in Essex County, chances are you've visited this place for ice cream more than once. Its a local staple. Today I decided to grab a bite for lunch, as one of my nieces raves about their food (she'll drive from Windsor for a burger). Their food menu is pretty vast, considering the kitchen size. I opted for a sausage on a bun, medium spicy curly fries (for 2 ppl) and my partner ordered a cheeseburger. We both had canned pop. Total came to $21.50, a good deal for the amount of food. My sausage was very lean...hardly any fat. It was good, but I've had better off food trucks. My partner's cheeseburger was, in his words, "homemade and very good". The spicy curly fries should be called "seasoned" curly fries, as there was zero spiciness to them. They were very good regardless. I'd go back and try other items. Well, this is all that is good... now let us move on to the other NOT so great pieces... as much as they are known for their ice creams, their food is HORRENDOUS! Please NO! Recently purchased fries topped with cheese... could not believe my eyes when they served not so great fries with processed cheese slices cut into thin strips and laid on top of the fries. Food takes forever to come out of their kitchen! To add injury to insult, the girls bringing food to the car give you a nasty look and attitude when you don't tip them enough.. Are used to love this place growing up I still do love it the portions have stayed the same, the food has stayed the same and the services stayed the same. All those things are good. The prices, however, have gone up to the point where I can no longer wrap my head around going there. It's cheaper for me to go sit down at a restaurant order an alcoholic beverage and get a meal than it is for me to go get a burger and a milkshake. read more

Drive in/walk up system. Great place for ice cream. Their onion rings and curly fries are really good, but when ordering from the kitchen- expect a long wait for your food. There's nothing fast about ordering off the hot menu. Otherwise it's a good place if you're not in much of a hurry. read more

Great place a little ways from Windsor to get ice cream. Simple ice cream menu with only vanilla ice cream available but you have an assorted variety of toppings. Delicious vanilla soft serve and getting it dipped in chocolate is a must! The sundae's with fruit toppings are also super delicious. The syrup they use isn't fake tasting and real fruit is added. The raspberries were a bit tart though. Always a pretty busy place but parking is abundant. Have yet to try any of the food. read more

I love this place!!! Always exciting when Dairy Freeze opens up again every spring!!! Delicious ice cream!! I highly recommend the apple turnover with ice cream. They're curly fries are delicious as are there bacon cheeseburgers!! Don't get the poutine... you get a piece of processed cheese instead of cheese curds. But besides that everything is great!!! Nice atmosphere!! And the drive in part is so handy for cooler evenings... especially when you have small children in the vehicle. A county classic. Over the years they have added extra seating behind the stand but they still serve roadside classics during the summer, ice cream, french fries, sandwiches. All exactly as you would expect, no surprises here, which means the food is only average, but that consistency keeps people returning and summer ice creams are never a bad idea. read more
