The Paintsville Dairy Queen is legendary and for very good reason. Unless you've spent significant time in Paintsville, this Dairy Queen is unlikely any DQ that you have ever experienced. Folks still take your order manually, jotting down on paper and doing the math to total it up (no calculators), then you're handed a paper slip with a three-digit code that will be announced over the loudspeaker. If the vintage ambiance and "Outlaw DQ" vibe isn't enough to win you over, the food will. From a genuine Paintsville native, here's the quintessential Paintsville DQ order: - Foot-long hotdog with sauce and slaw - Onion rings - Butterscotch or peanut butter milkshake Some fellow natives claim that the meat sauce recipe has changed significantly from the 90s. Rumor has it, the lady responsible for the recipe -- a Slone, I believe -- took her patented meat sauce formula to the grave with her. Be that as it may, whatever recipe is in effect now works also satisfies, at least in my book. However, I've only been able to visit Paintsville once or twice annually since moving away in 2003, so nostalgia admittedly makes me an easy grader.

I'm not from Paintsville so I don't get it. Foods not great and I always feel like I'm in the way when I'm trying to order food from there.

The best thing about this place was the service it was fast, super friendly people. While the environment is laid back and welcoming, the Dairy Cheer is a hard place to review. As it has been a staple of food service in Prestonsburg for as long as the majority of the population remembers. While it does definitely have its good parts, but does have some consistency issues. Their onion rings are especially amazing!! My wife and I both had the Smash Burger and what was in the past the signature burger of Dairy Cheer with the Onion Rings. The burger was good. However the meat to bun ratio was a little too much for my liking and a little overcooked. The real issue we both had was the charred flavor on the onion rings and the overt amount of excess grease. Both these indicate that the oil in the fryer needs filtered and/or changed. Normally this wouldn't be too much of an issue but given previous meals we have had here with the best onion rings in the state it is almost a heresy for them to be done this way. It is a good place but small things like this from a place that once had such a high standard is disappointing.

This place is a joke. First of all, they don't smash any burgers here, burgers haven't smashed at…read morethis place in years, what you get is a crappy frozen puck of the lowest quality meat that's been unevenly, cooked on a flame grill and thrown in a tray, so when you finally get it, it's no longer hot. All the sides come out of freezer burnt bags. The staff is disinterested, the floor is covered with grime, and the restrooms are disgusting and outback in the alley. Literally the trash burger.

My husband had Dee's Double Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of Onion Rings and Potato Salad. As I wasn't very hungry, I ordered a plain burger with tomato only and a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. If I'd ordered 2 burgers, I would have eaten them both. They as well as my mashed potatoes were flavorful and positively delicious. At one point I looked up and saw that my hubby's cheeseburger had vanished into thin air, yes indeed he was a very happy camper with his meal as well. We missed the opportunity to try their raved about milkshakes but fully intend to rectify that on our return trip! The front desk clerk at our hotel who had told us about Dee's said it has been around as long as he can remember, it was a popular hangout back when his Grandma was in high school. (Thanks Cody) We'll be back Dee!

Walk in and place your order at the counter while viewing the large menu behind the counter. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and ice cream all served here. Ordered the Dee Burger as recommended by the friendly server who took our order. It's a double cheeseburger with a middle bun, coleslaw on one part and tartar sauce on the other part. Fantastic flavors! Also ordered a side of onion rings. These are the best onion rings I've had in a long time! This restaurant appears to be the hub of activity for the locals. Why only four stars? Their restrooms are located downstairs by way of external stairs out back leading to two very small separate stalls. One of which has a sink but no soap or paper towels. We were informed they are in the process of updating these restrooms. Hope to find a better situation on my next visit.
