I'm an old fart so I remember when DQ's in small towns were the livin' shizz. I have to say the Dairy Queen in Sonora, TX holds top honors for me. The bathrooms are clean, the atmosphere is busy and lively, the counter service was wonderful and the food was delicious, well prepared, and carried to our table on a red plastic tray as Joe Diffy sang "John Deere Green." Seriously, does it get any better than that? My wife also wanted to add she is thrilled they have the taco salad on the menu, evidently the DQ's in Austin don't any longer. She also pointed out cowboys in the parking lot, petting dogs in their truck beds and just generally being cowboys. Stop at this DQ on the way to Davis Mountain State Park and again on the way back home to Houston. The interior and exterior had seen better days, but the dining room and bathroom were clean. We ordered burgers and fries for lunch and the foods tasted fine for fast food. No complaint since we were in the middle of nowhere. I stopped at the DQ on my way south on 277 for something quick to tide me over until I got to Del Rio. Day two of a cross country road trip, I was willing to settle for something greasy, cheap and fast. The drive thru moved a little slow, but after being on the road non-stop for hours, some idle time in a drive thru was a welcome break. I ordered the fried steak fingers, with fries. The steak fingers (think country fried steak) tasted fine, but the fries dipped in the country gravy were my favorite part of the order. The order had 5 steak fingers, fries, Texas toast and a cup of gravy for under $10.00. My only issue with the drive thru was the speaker cutting in and out, making it hard to understand the employee, who was patient with me. In my opinion DQ is best for ice cream, but when you're on the road wanting something quick and cheap this is okay. Plus side was that it was easy to get back on my way to Del Rio. read more

Driving from austin and decided to stop by before the closing time. Got into the drive thru around 9:50. There were two employees that's young. Dodged us because they seemed like they rushed to close the store. Honked the horn and a dark skinned employee approached us. Addressed myself that I'm deaf and I let him know that I wanna order something. He told me they re closed. Told him it's not 10 o'clock pm yet and they wanted to close earlier than normal. He continued to speak thru his mouth and I told him I'm deaf and I don't read lips. Continued but with a gesture that they re closed. Told him that the store hours is 10 am to 10 pm. Just wanted to order. Kept gesturing to me that they re closed. Y'all re stay open until the expected time that s closed. We sat in line behind two cars for approximately 8 minutes. The order screen at the drive through had a sign which displayed " out of order" so we figured we would order at the window. Unfortunately, as we approached the window, a woman holding a mop opened the drive through window and curtly announced they were no longer taking orders through the drive through before abruptly shutting the window. No apology, no invitation to go in, no further explanation, and absolutely no manners. Down the road, as this woman most likely will find herself unemployed, she should look for a job where customer service is not a priority at all. read more

Lettuce is iceberg & diced tomatoes must have been cut up yesterday... gross, flavorless, pricey junk. Never had DQ "food" before. Should have stuck with the burger... it's hard to ruin a burger. There will be no next time, but if I fall into a multi-universe black hole & there is, I'll just have a banana split for dinner... same calories, same nutrition value (none, basically) & lower price. When in Texas, I am legally obligated to order a steak finger basket because we don't have them in Arizona. I pulled in, checked in, ordered, used the little girls room & had my food brought to me within seven minutes. The steak fingers were hot & fresh, so hot in fact, that I have time to write this review while they cooled down a bit. Coca Cola was mixed right from the machine. The steak fingers were spot on, the fries looked ok, but tasted raw, with no salt. The ketchup packets were large & a style I hadn't seen before. The disappointing part was the "Texas toast" that was sans the usual buttery goodness. When I showed a worker the bland bread she said "they took our butter machine away." When pressed, she said "Corporate is cheap & took our butter away." This statement doesn't surprise me since Corporate has had a running gun battle with Texas DQs to end meals such as the steak finger basket, failing to understand the Texas pallet. Hence why you see much smaller menus at DQs in other states. After the meal I was further required to indulge in a chocolate dipped cone & wasn't disappointed despite one gal teasing the other about her "substandard cone" technique this time. Staff was very friendly & funny. Store was reasonably clean for the volume & the restroom was in good working order which was good to have on a 13 hour trip. Didn't like the itty bitty trash can near the soda station, which could use a 13 gallon can next to it. Also suggest working with the cook to up her french frying game, but otherwise an ok stop. read more

I rarely bother to write a review but this is the worst dining experience of my life. First off, my wife ordered a Blizzard and there was no Heath Bar in it. When we took it back they wanted to charge us extra for more. We didn't want more, we wanted some. In the end we just got our money back. Fries were cold and the rest was unremarkable. Fast food on a road trip comes with mixed emotions. My low expectations were not boosted by the bustling dining area. For the newcomers in our group, the menu options did not inspire confidence. Why is a burger called a belt buster? Steak fingers? The hesitation was palpable. In a moment of desperation, an exasperated friend forwarded the idea of going to Sonic, if only for the chance to dine outside. This idea was quickly countered by another friend's assurance that the food quality was appreciably better at DQ (by the end of the review, it will be clear why this is true). Service: Fast, friendly. Atmosphere: Casual and forgiving of disheveled road trippers. Cute babies abound. Food: Filling, aromatic, and refreshing. Gravy was a delightful touch.
