I first went to Dale when I was 20 and in college. I'm 32 now and still going to him. If you're looking for a reason to visit his salon, here you go :) And I just want to add: I'm picky. Over the course of these 12 years, because of work and studies that took me away from the Bay Area for long periods of time, I also got my hair cut in well-reviewed studios in NY, Boston, Berlin, and Beijing. But for me Dale is always No.1. Why? To start, he understands what would look good on you intuitively. I don't have to over-state what I want, and he just gets it and delivers it beautifully and without hassle. Most of the time I ask for my usual style, but I've also branched out to experiment with perms and other cuts, and I always come away feeling beautiful and like my best self. So much so, in fact, that every time I'm inspired to make it a day (or night) afterwards in Berkeley, feeling giddy and glowing. I also admire Dale because, even with decades of experience, he's still learning the latest in the field. Picture this: You're walking down the street (Shattuck Ave. in this case) with your shiny hair bouncing around your shoulders as if there's a fan in front of you the entire time. Grown men and teenage boys alike are doing double takes and saying things like "Dayum!" The bums are so busy staring that they forget to ask you if you can spare some change. No, this is not a poorly written shampoo commercial; it's my reality every time I leave Dale's salon. FACT. I don't just get a haircut from Dale. I get an entire beauty-enhancing experience from him. His hilarious conversation provides me with a huge smile and glow, while the magic he works into my hair provides it with shine and bounce. As I'm extremely protective of my long, ultra thick hair, I am quite appreciative of Dale's ability to give me just a trim when I ask for one and his willingness to give me complimentary bang trims. I also love that he uses Moroccan Oil, which I've been using for several years now to control my frizzy waves. My two-year relationship with Dale is the longest one I've ever had with a stylist, so that's saying something. And the reason I'll no longer go to him is not the same reason why I've terminated all my previous relationships with hair stylists. I first came to Dale way back in 2005 when I was a sophomore at UC Berkeley. I had used "ash blonde" home dye and had grey, green hair. It was HORRENDOUS. I had gone to other stylist before finding Dale, who wouldn't even touch it because my hair was so damaged. And then, I found Dale!! I came here last year for a keratin treatment after a breakup and Dale did an AMAZING job. My hair was so soft and manageable. Fast track to my most recent trip. I booked the appointment so that I could get a keratin treatment on my birthday in preparation for my birthday weekend. My hair looked great coming out of the salon, but after the first wash, it was frizzy as heck! As the weeks passed, the state of my hair just got worse and worse. The last 2 inches were so damaged that my stylist at a salon back home suggested I just cut it off and start coming in for deep conditioning treatments to fix it. As anybody growing out their hair knows, though, two inches is A LOT! I've emailed Dale and called them multiple times over the past few weeks, but to no avail. I honestly cannot say enough things about Dale. I've been getting my haircut with him for six years now, starting with the time I was at Cal and needed a local hairdresser. After I graduated and moved an hour away, I would still drive an hour to get my hair cut with him. He really really gets it! At this point, I go in and just let him work his magic. I barely give any direction and he always has me walking out feeling and looking great. His prices are definitely reasonable for his level of expertise. The only downside is that he's so popular that you have to make an appt well ahead of time! That being said, the online appointment calendar is very easy to use and I've never had a problem. Extra bonus is how beautiful the Julia Morgan building he is in really is! I always do a quick wander around after my haircut to see everything again - it's worth peeking your head in the courtyard and pool just to see all the pretty. They also have a coffee bar that's stocked with hot Peet's coffee, which is nice when I get my hair cut in the morning. Again, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this man. He's a true pleasure to be around, he dedicates his time to you and your hair (you're his only chair!) and I love my regular chats with him. OK- I have been putting off doing this for about a year and a half. I do not think Dale is a bad or malicious guy but he really messed up doing Japanese Straightening on me. I even said I wouldn't leave a bad Yelp review when he refunded me and even gave me extra money. But, when one has beautiful hair they've been growing out for years and a year and a half later I have daily reminders as I still have weird messed up short bits that are annoying and cause my hair to not be as full and to have uneven fullness on both sides, well...I'm still suffering from his mistake. I've been getting my hair Japanese straightened since 2007. I have been to 3 different salons to do this and never did I have an experience or result like I did with Dale. Sometimes they would sear/fry *some* hair. at this one place in Manhattan. It wouldn't fall out and wasn't noticeable so not too upsetting. But Dale literally burned off and caused a fistful of hair to sear off at the root. I even had to change my part to hide it. It's still bad. He was charming and chatty and very nice. By the end of it though, things got kind of weird. I think it was maybe because he seared off chunks of my hair and didn't want to tell me? His next appointment of the day showed up and he just shifted his attention to her and basically neglected me as I left. So, it went from great service and a nice time- I even gave him a really good tip since he was so nice for most of the appointment. But I knew before I left my hair was weird. My bangs were super dry and brittle and there was an area on the top where every time I touched it is felt like a crunchy Brillo pad. I thought maybe I just had to deep condition when I was allowed to wash my hair again. I didn't realize my hair was burned off at the root. Or that my hair would take over a year to recover and get soft and nice again. I soon noticed the dry Brillo bits were actually seared off hair. A lot of it. I contacted the salon and got a full refund plus the tip but man oh man. If you want Japanese straightening at least have him test your hair first. Or better yet, go to Dax and Lindsay in SF. The thing that makes me angry isn't that this happened really. Japanese straightening is risky, period. But what upsets me is that THERE IS NO WAY HE DID NOT NOTICE CHUNKS OF HAIR FALLING OFF MY HEAD AS HE DID THIS. As he was straightening or washing my hair, how could he not see large, long locks flowing down the drain? My hair is long like covers my breasts/mid-back. He never even acknowledged his mistake and pretended like nothing happened and sent me home. So yeah, every day for a year and a half I have had to make sure my part helps hide the un-eveness, hides the short pieces, extra condition the short pieces as they get frizzy and want to stick out, etc. Not only was a lot of my hair fried off but my hair was FRIED period after. I have been getting my hair chemically straightened for almost a decade, even at cheap places in NYC to a high-end place in SF and never has my hair gotten this messed up. Dale is great. He's funny, charming and made me feel really comfortable. The hairstyle he created for my wedding consultation was beautiful and I was really excited to have him do my hair on my wedding day. So why one star? Well, I have very curly, mixed girl hair. When I left the salon my hair smelled burned. Dale mentioned that he used the flat iron at over 450F on my hair, which I thought was excessive but since my hair looked good when I left, I didn't think much of it. When I washed my hair the next day, my ends broke off and after over a week, my hair still smells burned, won't curl, and keeps breaking off at the ends. It looks horrible!!! Now I have to start all over and find someone who can work with my damaged, dull, burnt smelling hair. So, if you have really thick, curly hair, stay away. read more

I was hesitant about taking the time to write a yet another positive review, since he already has so many... but this man really deserves it. I got a cut and a keratin treatment done as a graduation gift to myself. Supposedly, it's the upgraded brazilian blowout - smoothing, without all the risks of formaldehyde. Usually, these treatments cost upwards of $300 at other salons, but I was only charged $190. Dale was a pleasure to talk to (funny, and he remembers returning clients!) which was a drastic change from my previous hair stylists who cut my hair in silence. He really cares about making clients look and feel their best, and took extra care to make sure he never cut my hair too short. I'm not one of the lucky Asians who was born with silky soft, straight hair. Instead, I have the big, frizzy, semi-wavy hair that always gets looks and comments of shock and confusion when I haven't drenched it in hair serums and oils to tame it with. However, when I left from Dale's that day, my hair was completely transformed. Smooth, bouncy, and silky enough to be in a shampoo commercial. I couldn't stop touching it, and my boyfriend (who is normally stingy with the complements) thought it was totally sexy. Despite totally deserving it, Dale turned down my tip ("don't worry about it - you just graduated! get a job first!"), and gifted me with a jar of some salon-quality hair cream to maintain my new do with. ------------------- UPDATE: A few weeks later, my hair was getting funky again, so I called in. Dale/his secretary were very gracious, and managed to squeeze me in for a supposed 30mn mini-session. He ended up spending about an hour on my hair, touching up the keratin treatment, and making it look gorgeous again. I even got a few more goodies. All of this, at no charge. For half a year, I'd been contemplating getting a really dramatic hair cut. I haven't had bangs in about ten years and I decided it was time to bring them back. I realized this was not a task I could entrust to Super Cuts, my usual stand by. After some research, I made an appointment with Dale. I've never really splurged on a hair cut before, but I'm glad I did. First off, Dale is really friendly and makes you feel comfortable. He doesn't push anything on you but really tries to work with you to figure out what you want. He's also very conscientious of that fact that not every girl is willing/able to spend a half an hour plus in the morning on styling and gives tips based on your own experience/routine on how to work with your do. Also, as he's working on your hair he explains what he's doing so you're not just sitting there out of the loop. As for the cut itself, it's definitely the best I've ever had! I'm very happy with my straight cut bangs, which require less maintenance than I thought they would. I have natural waves in my hair which usually makes layers look awkward on me. However, the layers he put in my hair look awesome every day, even on the days after I've slept on it funny :P. They look even better as my hair starts to grow out. I never would have paid $60 for haircut before, but now that I've had one from Dale I realize that it's a steal for what you get! I'm converted. Super Cuts, I think we need some time off... I had really high hopes for this hair cut, because of the Yelp reviews and referral from a friend. Unfortunately, it did not go well. When I saw him start the cut with thinning shears, I started to panic. Because of his great reputation, though, I figured I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. He cut my entire head using only thinning shears! I didn't realize how bad the result was, at first, because he put so much leave-in conditioner in it that the split ends weren't obvious. After that stuff washed out, I saw that he basically frayed all of my hair. The texture has changed, the ends are sloppy, and he really didn't give it any shape. I'm very disappointed. Update: I meant to update this a few months ago, but kept forgetting. Dale was really nice about this whole situation and gave me a full refund with no pressure to return to the salon for another cut. So, I saw Dale twice in the last seven years and I can now say that I WILL NEVER GO BACK. The first time I saw him was for color. I have very dark brown hair and I wanted a richer/warmer shade of brown. I left with bleached hair and the damage was so bad that my hair began to break off. What's worse is that there was nothing i could do to remedy the situation. Now, flash forward 7 years later and I decided, due to all the great reviews, that I'd give him one more shot. This time Im getting a cut to correct a horribly uneven bob that I had grown out for a year. (FYI the bob was done at great clips and i guess it was a get-what-you-pay-for kinda mistake.) Anyway, I told him my story and told him i'd like something that i could still put into a ponytail. I ended up with hair that falls above my shoulder on one side and below my shoulder on the other! :"( Not to mention that I absolutely cannot put my hair up in a ponytail anymore :'( One star for the half-empty keratin-replenishing potion that he let me leave with. Which, by the way, is a product I'm happy with so far. Oh, and he told me i was pretty *blush* I want to add that I have seen him produce awesome hair on at least 2 other clients. Dale's work truly deserves a 5-star(highlights+haircut). Here are the reasons: 1) Professionalism. He is very professional in styling your hair to meet your goal. I came in without knowing what to get, and ask to get something that "shapes my face and provides both fashion and professional look".. He told me NOT to do a perm/curling or full coloring(which are more expensive l). He instead pick a color for highlighting(only 10% of my hair). The highlighting was very well done, just what I wanted. Then he gave me a haircut that perfectly shapes my face. Without any detail orders from me , Dale was able to give me exactly what I was looking for. 2) Price. Compared to the prices I usually pay for the same/lower quality, it's actually cheaper. With highlighting and haircut(and a demo of how to use curling iron), I was charged $140. He said no tip is necessary because he own the business...that's very nice :) As somebody used to Asian haircuts and stylists , I usually find it hard to trust an American saloon...Dale proved me wrong. read more

So I went to Dale's yesterday to get my hair highlighted and he did it so quickly I was in shock. I have very thick curly hair and allocated like 3 hours to get it done. He was done in less than an hour. I could not believe it. And it was done very well. After a rinse off he blowed out my hair completely pin straight in less than an hour. It was so unbelievable. I got compliments for the rest of the day. Later I noticed that the top of my head wasn't as light as the rest of my hair so I called back to see if I could get it touched up on. They were super receptive and Dale saw me again today and made it look awesome! For being a college student it was a bit pricey but then again I am used to my good friend giving me discounts. I can never seem to clear my schedule when it comes to hair maintenance, but somehow that never seems to be an issue. Dale works magic in some unexplainable way. I still get asked where I get my hair done months after having it colored or cut. For some reason, the salon I went to before Dale would insist on giving me a cut I didn't want. I went to Dale all throughout HS- moved away. Returned- tried a few other folks, but it was never the same... Good thing he took me back! He is sweet gentle man with an amazing sense or humor. The conversations we've had (my instigations) have been WAY out there, and conversations that I'll never forget. But hes just that kind of guy. Being new in town, I tried Dale based on all the great reviews - and now, after 8+ months of visits I plan to keep coming here until he stops doing hair. I barely have to tell him what to do, he just does it, and I always leave with healthy hair that looks fabulous (I get both highlights and cuts, and I have had several perfect strangers compliment me on my hair since I started seeing Dale). He uses high quality products and is very focused on hair health, which means a lot to me as my hair is pretty sensitive. His prices are great in comparison to my last salon, too.
