This was one of the worst haircuts of my life! I got the opposite of what I wanted and my hair surprisingly became 6 inches shorter than what was agreed to. Prior to coming here, I had my hair cut in Paris. This was the best haircut of my life. Long layers that eventually grew down to waist length. I described what I wanted (my hairstyle for years): cut to mid-boob length, with long layers starting from just above my chin (using my hands to gesture at height), plus thinning throughout because most hairdressers have described my hair as one of the thickest they've ever seen. What I got was a sideway somewhat uneven lob with no layers that ended at the bottom of my neck. This looks especially bad with my thick hair and on days when my hair is particularly voluminous and poofy I feel like a yeti. It will probably take another 6 months for my hair to grow back! I deserve to have my $160 compensated back to me for harm done. I'm so traumatized from this experience that I might go back to cutting my own hair as I did during COVID. When I asked why the length was so short, the hairstylist said this was better than what I wanted. Having already sat through a 1.5h haircut and knowing that long layers were not possible anymore, I didn't complain any further and just wanted to get out of there. I'll add to this that my hairstylist had some unsavory political opinions that should probably be kept private, in Berkeley of all places. I'm not coming back here. read more

I want to preface this that I had a trusted hairstylist in SF who cut my hair since mid-college (~2012), but she recently retired and I was too afraid to let anyone else cut my hair for the longest time; found this place through a Google search of good hair salons in North Berkeley and decided to give it a try. I'm really glad I trusted them to cut my hair! I have thick, unruly, can be frizzy, wavy to curly hair. Corynne cut my hair and I gave her a heads up that this was the first time I was not going to my trusted gal Laura; Corynne followed the layout of my usual hair cut then we had a bit of an awkward moment when she asked what I wanted to do with my bangs (Laura's spoilt me that I never had to give her instructions on how to cut my hair; she just knew from years of knowing me); overall I had a good experience and will likely come back for maintenance trims. I really liked the vibe of the salon; they didn't push me to buy their products; it's a bit more bougie and expensive than what I'm used to (Laura charged me $40-45 over the last decade) but change has a way of forcing me to move forward, so here we are. read more

I first discovered him at a salon close by to my house in sf. Now I commute all the way to Berkeley on Bart so I can see him lol It takes a lot for me to trust someone with my hair since it's been damaged before in the past but Wane, his hands are like MAGIC I SWEARRRR Every time, he's finished with my hair, I feel so much more confident in myself. I feel so beautiful and my hair eats every time Wane cuts it. He not only saved my absolutely damaged hair, he made it sooo much better and now it's growing healthy as you can see. I love how Wane styles my hair and colors it so it can stay healthy. I've gotten my hair bleached by him in the past too so he's really talented with that as well. I've been here twice now and have had great experiences both times. The first time I saw Chase on a friend's recommendation. I had been going to a cheap salon for a few years, and it was a class case of you get what you pay for. Chase fixed my color and I was very pleased with the highlights and lowlights she put in. She listens to what I liked and looked at some photos of inspiration she had suggested I find. I scheduled a follow up visit but ended up needing to book a more last minute appointment due to some family photos being scheduled. Luckily, Vesi was available. I went in for highlights and tone, and he suggested a trim to remove the vestiges of a crappy haircut I had (made my fine hair look wispy and not at all full). He did a dry cut after the color and I love how it came out. So much fuller! The salon itself is gorgeous, with plants and natural light everywhere. My only complaint is that the bathrooms smell terrible - they had the doors propped open so I don't think it's an unknown issue but was definitely not pleasant to be in there! The front desk were also lovely. There's ample parking on side streets. Looks like I found my new salon home! read more

I got a cut and partial balayage + tone with Chase a week ago, which was my first ever experience with modifying my hair color. I booked my appointment through e-mail, and the salon was very good about accommodating my last-minute appointment request (I sent an email out around a week in advance). Chase was also very accommodating with regards to staying overtime by taking a 4:30 PM three-hour long appointment, which I was very grateful for. The salon space was very clean and had plastic dividers up between shampoo stations, so I could tell Modena was taking precautions seriously. I asked Chase for a semi natural look as i wanted an ash brown-highlight look on my black hair, and she definitely more than delivered; my hair was toned beautifully and the balayage appeared as though my hair was sun-kissed, which was the exact look I was going for. The only issue I have is that after only two washes with the shampoo and conditioner I bought from the salon (OI shampoo + hair butter), the tone already seemed to go away; my hair color already appears much warmer than the color I left the salon with. I expected the toner to last longer because I requested brown on black hair. I am unsure if the tone change was due to the toner not being left on for long enough or the products or because my dark hair may not retain tone well, so I only docked off one star. Other miscellaneous comments + feedback is that I wish there was a more streamlined appointment booker than email and that they would include the price of a partial balayage on their menu (only an approximation of a full balayage is listed). While I was hunting for hair salons, one of the ones I reached out to included price approximations of their service(s) in their follow-up email, which is something I appreciated and wish Modena did; I had no idea what the prices of the services were until I reached the checkout counter. Otherwise, I had an overall good experience and would recommend Chase and Modena salon to anyone. read more

Finally got my summer highlights.... in October! It was worth the wait! I love the balayage and cutting techniques Chase uses for my hair, and the products she recommends for me. I felt very safe too this last time in the salon, temp checks at the door, hand sanitizer available and hair stations spaced apart. * Do not Uber to Modena Salon! The name of the salon comes up and you select that, but it is not the right address- they have not updated their new address. 1. I was told to come in and see what the available hairdresser would have time for (I said I wanted coloring done). She could have told me when his next apt was to begin with! Once I am in the chair with their newest staff, I learn he has 2 hours and will not accommodate any aspect of my coloring (money piece, partial highlights- which I already have but are outgrown). 2. Immediately he tells me that what we will do today, without ASKING, is a haircut. Continues to condescendingly tell me that I am in need for that and not coloring. Tells what he wants to do to my hair, and I reply telling him, no, I don't want that. Continues to mansplain his idea of the haircut I need. I tell him my concerns with that, and that at most I'd be happy to cut no more than 3 1/2 inches, but no more and no more layers. He replied as though he heard and would not cross those requests, except for saying that I need layers if I want it to look good at all, and that we won't do more around my face like I asked. 3. So I say, okay, let's do it. Immediately, within 45 seconds, dry hair, chops off approx. 6-7 inches before walking me for a shampooing. I couldn't leave like that obviously, it was chopped, not cut. My hair was down past my hips. It is now just below my chest. 4. To end it here, because coming from that was entirely draining: my head has never been so rough handled. From smacking me in the face with my own hair during the hair cut, to pulling it intensely as he tossed it, to smacking me in the face with his own hands when tossing it, to scratching and hitting my face with the drying brush. What was supposed to be an uplifting, calm experience is hands down the worst salon experience I've ever had. I left feeling tired and out of tolerance. I need a refund. read more

Long overdue review, I have been going to Chase at Modena for years and am so grateful. Chase is a gifted genius of a stylist, as generous with her knowledge of hair and styling techniques, as she is patient and reliable in delivering results. She has a great eye and always listens and delivers exactly what I want, and knows how to tame my thick hair texture, (which alternates between frizzy and straight), into a flattering cut and style. I have learned so much about how to maintain healthier hair and how to style it, even though I have very little time. The products they use at the salon are great- environmentally conscious, mostly nontoxic and really work. The new interior is lovely, and everyone is super nice and understanding in a shared values kind of way. I usually call for scheduling. While Chase sometimes gets booked out, I have gotten same week appointments by asking to be on a waitlist. read more

The color and cut is beautiful and exactly what I wanted. Kim really listens to what you want and works with the particular quirks of your hair. I have been one of the "safety girls" in this Covid adventure, really limiting my social interaction and keeping my bubble very small. I was so impressed and relieved to see the way Modena is handling their operation. They have modified the space (actually quite beautifully!) to add physical barriers and increase separation between clients, limited the number of people, ensured thorough ventilation with windows and doors OPEN and air flowing through, and added strict, thoughtful protocols before the appointment. And of course...MASKS and hand sanitizer everywhere. I felt very safe going there recently and was so happy to feel a sense of normalcy (SO good!), being in Chase's capable and artistic hands. I got a haircut here about 6 months ago, and I am sorry to say that it was one of the worst haircuts I have ever gotten. I have very curly hair and they thinned and layered my hair. Still today my hair is not nearly as thick as it should be and is layered in distinct and choppy sections. I can't comfortably wear my hair down or natural.
