No frills cafe. Spicy chai. Pay in cash. Interior has a couple of tables. No music plays inside the cafe so if you like a quieter space or like to hear background noise, this is the spot. I was craving a chai and out of all the cafes along the street, I chose Dana Street. Now this is not a weak kind of chai, we are talking about a chai that packs a punch and would sure wake you up. A true old school coffee shop that keeps it real and you can tell by their menu. Drinks ordered were the Caffe Valencia and Iris Cream latte with one in a mug and the other in a cool looking glass. The Irish drink was simple and flavorful with its cream flavoring. The Valencia was a cappuccino with orange and nutmeg and a well balanced cute cup with both flavors. Cute little coffee shop just off of Castro! When you enter, you're greeted with the smell of roasting beans. There is plenty of seating and free WiFi, so it's perfect for when you want to get some work done. The man (owner?) of the store was so kind and let us try the coffee before purchasing their beans. I've been going here off and on for many years (pre covid as well). I've had mixed feelings (see other's reviews) about the service over the years. But today we went in and had a great experience. The two men working were pleasant enough, not overly talkative or anything but that's fine with me. I asked a question about the coffee and they answered it with no issue. I'm not sure if maybe they incorrectly charged me or what but my iced vanilla latte was only $4 and it was very good. I've gotten very used to post pandemic pricing of $6+ for my coffee drinks. Sometimes over $8 for a latte. So $4 seems insanely low. I'm loving it though. Additionally, the seating area is very laidback and inviting. They had some children's books to entertain the kids which was a nice touch. Overall a great experience and I hope for the same next time I visit. read more

Open seven days/week (08:00-14:00), I can always count on baristas (baristos if you fail/refuse to recognize that "barista" is a gender neutral word) Shadow and/or Noah to prepare an exquisitely constructed/perfect tasting cuppa' joe, made better by using recyclable cups (or bring your own), with a selection of additives: half-and-half/honey/cinnamon/ . Use a stirring stick to blend it as you prefer whilst enjoying interior seating, sidewalk tables under shades, or "to go". With only Shadow & Noah on duty, a small queue might cause a short weight, but it's worth it as you can chat up other delightful patrons, or, once served, sit down to use the free WiFi to complete your next bestseller.....! If you're feeling peckish, light snacks (my preference is the toasted poppyseed bagel + cream cheese, but I've also enjoyed muffins/"healthy" Danish/biscotti) are available. Sometimes I can read up on the area news in a free newspaper; no way can I afford any of the advertised homes, though sitting amongst the period roasters with open ceilings is nice. This place somehow continues to be a hidden gem, still yet to be discovered by many. I lived in the bay area for 9 years, and only discovered Dana St roasting in my last 3 years by word of mouth. I'm doing you a favor by doing the same ;) I relocated to the Tahoe area and still make it a point to drop in for a latte or chai or cafe borgia. I even purchase their espresso beans from time to time so I can make it in Tahoe to fill my hearts desire. Chai is authentic, steeped in spices for several hours with just a touch of honey. Because of this, it's spicy, but DELICIOUS and very homey. Their espresso bases drinks are phenomenal and I'm picky. read more

Wowza. This was my first time at Dana Street in downtown MV. I got their Mexican Mocha, and it was great! Not overly sweet and the hint of spice at the end was just what I was craving today. I usually get a drip coffee with maybe oatmilk for my first time when I try a coffeehouse, so I will definitively be back to try that out. The ambiance is very casual and you can see many loyal customers pay their daily visits there. The service is slower, chill, and very friendly. So if you're in the mood for a small town coffee bar (not in a rush), do check them out! read more

Great selection of flavors. The gingerbread latte is sweet like the cookie but not too sweet. The banana mocha has the subtle taste of the banana mixed with the chocolate. Friendly staff and great prices. There's no indoor seating but it's in downtown Mountain View so take a stroll with your coffee. Overall, great place to get coffee. read more

But when I return and witness the unfriendly service, I think that it's time to find another coffee shop. I have probably been going to Dana Street roast and company since 1996 or 1997. I am so glad they have made it so far through the pandemic and I encourage you to get your coffee drinks and roasted coffee beans or ground coffee there. my preference is for the Ethiopian beans, but they have beans all around the world and they roast them in house They haven't yet re-opened any of the indoor seating, but they do have some outdoor seating for a pleasant weather, and where dogs can sit outside comfortably. Another weekend coffee run and we revisited Dana. This time we got the house special chai and the hazelnut latte (regular latte with hazelnut flavor), both with single shots. The order was ~$9 (with credit card surcharge). Chai was pre-brewed so it can't be made decaf. Dana's version had quite a strong scent of spice with no sweetness, which we appreciated. The hazelnut latte was delicious with a hint of sweetness, probably from the hazelnut flavoring. Both came in a 16oz cup, great portion for the price. read more

I'll start the review by mentioning that I'm not a coffee expert by any stretch. I went to Dana street roasting company for the first time on a Saturday noon during the pandemic. There was only one person ahead of me in the line. They have a variety of African and south American coffee beans and use a mixture of those for their in-store coffee. I order a cup of coffee and a bag of coffee beans. The cup of coffee was pretty good and the coffee beans that I got was different from all the other coffee beans that I've ever got, which is a plus. I like the taste and I will definitely come back. As a pro tip try to keep the conversation with the older woman on the register at minimum and try not to make eye contacts with her. She's pretty angry. I'm deducting two stars for that. On the other hand the gentleman at the register, takes his time to share his coffee knowledge with you. read more

I've been going here for more years than I care to admit (if it was a hand of blackjack, it would be a good hand) which means I've had more cups of coffee from them than I can possibly count. Oddly, I've never had any of the food. If I've come back for this many years, you have to assume it's good. To me, it's the best coffee in Mountain View -- better than the big chains or the other specialty places. Nick has been roasting on site since Dana Street opened in 1997. Check out the roaster in the corner of the room. The people here are nice and helpful. True the drinks don't always come out perfectly but just tell them and they'll fix it. Nick himself is often behind the counter and had lots of good stories to tell. He's got a good sense of humor as well -- ask him about the time Starbucks bought him out... Dana Street opens early (6:30am) and stays open until 6pm on Fri/Sat. So stop by and get caffeinated -- you're supporting a worthy local business. read more

Dana Street Roasting Company is a underdog of downtown Mountain View, and they're more hippy than hipster. It's located off of Castro Street (the main street) and it looks unassuming, with peeling and faded purple/grey paint and no clear signage from outfront, look for the outside tables with umbrellas. Dana Street Roasting is the best coffee in the downtown area and they roast their own beans. Way better espresso and coffee drinks then nearby Red Rocks Coffee! I even prefer their coffee over 1 Oz Coffee a few blocks away. I love Dana Street's lattes and mochas, it's a perfect layer of foam and the mochas are not sweet. Their prices are much lower than most of the other cafes nearby. The staff is always nice and friendly. I have heard the $7 sandwiches with chips are good, but they often close the kitchen when there is less staff in the cafe (like around school finals). This is 4/5 stars because they're cash only which is super annoying and no ATM machine nearby. I started carrying cash now because of Dana Street, which is ridiculous. That casual interior atmosphere is not for everyone, it's a mismatch of decor and looks a little bit like a thrift shop. It doesn't bother me personally, but I would probably not have a work meeting here. I don't love the pastry and food choices, but there are bakeries nearby within walking distance. read more

Come to the cafe on Tuesdays when Nick roasts the fresh coffee beans in the big roaster in the seating/dining area. I really can't explain the aroma of fresh, roasted coffee beans and the ambience that exists in this coffee shop. If you're ever in downtown Mountain View, treat yourself to a coffee, or my favorite, a tall triple latte. If you buy fresh roasted beans, try the Guatemalan. Silicon Valley would not be the same without this little crown jewel on Dana Street. read more

I usually don't leave reviews unless they are really good or really bad. In this case, it was a horrible experience. I used to come here when I was in high school and loved coming here. It's been about 10 or so years since I don't live in the area anymore and I know that maybe the pandemic has taken a toll on this little coffee spot but as soon as we (my cousin, husband and I) walked in we greeted an older lady behind the cash register and we were met with rudeness. She didn't say hi at all, my husband politely asked what was in their "kick in the pants" drink and she responded with "you pick your beans and I press a button" in such a condescending tone. I was gonna order a drink but because of her attitude I was completely put off. The reason we came in here was because I kept recommending this spot to my husband since I had such fond memories of this place back in the day. Needless to say we are never coming back here and I will not be recommending this coffee shop to anyone I know. read more

My coffee was excellent - got a double soy latte. They use vanilla soy. So it's slightly sweetened already. Good texture to milk and nice, smooth taste to the espresso. The place was packed on Sunday afternoon after farmers. Lots of seating indoors and outside, but majority seats taken. Came in around 2pm. Nice location. Live music inside - which would be nice if I was by myself, but came in with a friend so we sat outside so we could talk. Slow service though!! Took about 15-20 minutes for me to get my drink and it was wrong so they had to remake it. Also to the points below about cash only... they do take card for small service fee. I used to love this place. Would buy all of my coffee beans from them. But then I stopped. Not because the quality of their products changed - their service is just so awful. I made the mistake of going back yesterday (a friend wanted to meet there). I ordered a latte and had the nerve to ask what the sizes were. The woman behind the counter could have pointed to the cup sizes or told me 12oz vs 16oz, but this was clearly a major imposition to share the info. Once the order came out, I realized that they no longer had the sugar bar open on the side. When I asked her if I could get a packet of sugar, she was apoplectic. She threw the packet of sugar on the counter, reluctantly handed me a stirrer, and went back to what I assume was her miserable day. Again, if this was a one off, I would just go back and give them another chance. But this is the reason I stopped going in the first place. I will not make the same mistake again. read more
