This was my first time at a dance studio ever and I loved it. My friend called in advance and spoke with Marianne who was so polite and welcoming. We arrived at 630pm so we had a little time to catch up. We both suffer from analysis paralysis. "The state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome." Dancing is not easy or natural for me. Recently my friend and I went through this mutual experience where we really got a chance to step outside of our comfort zone. Not just once but again and again. It's not that I don't like to dance, I just don't do it because I was ok telling myself I just don't know how to. Until yesterday when I mustered up the courage to show up at Ballroom world of dance. The teachers are fabulous, knowledgeable and put you at ease from the first lesson. The students are so friendly and welcoming. No clicks here! Just a bunch of people who welcome everyone. The best thing is that the cost is so affordable. Neff, the owner, has a great monthly deal that includes unlimited group lessons and parties each month. You can't beat it anywhere else! What I love the most about the instruction here is that unlike other studios that feed out one simple thing to the whole group for each lesson to drag out the time it takes to learn (so they can get you for more $$$), this studio meets you where you are. This is a wonderful place to take intermediate level group dance lessons! I say this because sometimes it can be hard to find higher level classes, so it's been a refreshing experience for me to come to Neff's group classes. He always creates interesting combinations that are challenging, but not impossible. You will continue to grow in your dance competency if you show up regularly. I highly encourage you to do so. Ballroom World of Dance is the new dance school located in the Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks area. Director Marianne Van Etten has put together a great team of dance instructors and also teaches there herself. I'm a beginner-intermediate, and I came here originally because of the school's reputation for teaching ballroom dancing. They live up to their reputation, and the entire school is great. It's located in a large upstairs studio with hardwood floors, big windows, and is newly re-decorated. Classes are offered several evenings during the week, and on weekend afternoons. The Sunday afternoon session is a great deal...three hours for a very reasonable fee. You can bring your own partner or just show up and rotates among the other dancers. Incidentally, the male/female ratio is usually close to even (sometimes more men, even!) so time spent "sitting out" is usually minimal. Extra instructors are usually present to help even out the ratio. Marianne frequently helps the beginners so that intermediates can progress without being held back. The cost is very reasonable compared to the big national chain dance studios. The national chains have a reputation for being hard-sell and expensive. Marianne's primary motivation seems to be to enable people to dance well. And it's a family-type atmosphere...all the students are known by name and known for their dancing needs. Private instruction is also available. Finding a good ballroom school is not easy...I travel a long distance to attend their classes and it's well worth the effort. Should definitely be tried out if you have any interest in ballroom dancing, from complete beginner to advanced competitor. read more

We initially took lessons for a wedding and while we gave ourselves very little time to learn, they were patient and we had a great experience. Two years later and we now go weekly and while we have no pending events we decided we would take lessons for no more than the joy of dancing to music and having fun. The staff, the owner and our instructor is very pleasant, flexible and accommodating. I recommend them highly if you want to learn to dance and you are willing to put forth the effort. Like any other physical activity, the more you put into it, the more you practice, the more you will learn. The experience they bring to your lessons is well worth the investment in time and money. While some may not like a "private" lesson when others (one other couple) may be sharing the room and the music, I would only remind them that the last time I checked, we ultimately dance on crowded dance floors, not alone, and to many different music selections, not all to our liking. Their format and methodology for instruction works for us. Most of all, we have learned a lot, we enjoy the atmosphere and we have a great time with a lot of fun as our instructor not only is a dancer, he has a great sense of humor and cares. There is only so much that can be taught in a one hour private lesson and I feel we learned it. I bought a Conejo Deal for a private lesson. I bought it to hopefully learn the basics before our wedding coming up in a month. I think my instructor was Rebecca and she was great! It was an easy going instruction and I really learned a lot.
