First time here but I was overwhelmed with the beautiful presentation! The dance and art of this show was amazing! The space was totally unexpected, its old SF at its finest. Just really nice and amazing people enjoying local art. I felt so at home here in this space. Can't wait for next show:)

Dance Mission Theatre is probably one of my favorite places in the whole entire world. It is warm and community driven. It's artistically always changing and growing. It's a place for political art to take place. The staff is always warm and loving. I typically take hip hop with Allan Frias which is amazing!! It can get very crowded, but if you manage your way through that, the class is pure sassy magic. There are also a plethora of other classes some of which I've dropped into and really enjoyed- Dancehall, AfroBeats, Vogue, Salsa- you name it. Many of the teachers and dancers have been around for decades and are pillars and mentors in the dance community. A San Francisco treasure and a throwback to what San Francisco once was and still is for those of us lucky enough to find ourselves at Dance Mission.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASSES I used to take hip hop dance classes at 24 Hour Fitness. When some of the better choreographers left 24 Hour Fitness I was lazy to renew my membership. In order to reinstatement my membership, instead of paying $99 to renew, I would have to pay about $400 up front so I decided not to renew my membership. I started going to Dance Mission because Martin, who I used to take hip hop dance class at 24 Hour Fitness, mentioned about this studio. The first class I took was Beginning Hip Hop taught by David Schrag. His style was old school hip hop. After several weeks taking David's class I decided to challenge myself by taking Beginning/ Intermediate Hip Hop taught by Allan Frias. His class was really challenging as it's really fast paced. After several weeks getting acclimated with Allan's style I decided to take Intermediate Hip Hop taught by Micaya. I like her style too as it has a contemporary feel to it. The hardest hip hop dance class I ever taken was taught by Clint Calimlim, who no longer teaches at Dance Mission. He had a b-boy style as his moves were clean, but what made his style difficult is he used the back beats of the music to choreograph his pieces. However David, Allan, and Micaya are still at Dance Mission teaching hip hop dance classes. The classes at Dance Mission are affordable - $13 per drop-in. (You also have the option of buying class passes.) I never took any other dance classes at Dance Mission, but hip hop. What I enjoy about the hip hop classes at Dance Mission are they provide different styles taught by different choreographers. With different styles you really get great value of each drop-in. This also challenges you as a dancer because you had to adjust because if you get too comfortable with a style you can't grow as a dancer. Besides the fee the other positive feature of Dance Mission is the location of this studio is ideal because it's right in front of 24th Street/ Mission Bart Station. Even with the great diversity of the hip hop dance classes I can't give this place a perfect 5-star rating as the floors of this studio isn't the greatest. Wood floors aren't used but a cheap imitation of linoleum-like flooring that often becomes sticky. Overall if you like taking hip hop dance classes because of the choreographers and location I would recommended Dance Mission.

Stepping into dance mission, you are greeted with warmth, music and vibrant colors. I have been coming here and performing here for 12 years. What makes dance mission so different are the vibrant colors that surround this dance center. All the walls are like pink, green, blue, orange, and other colors... it's beautiful. None of the other studios share the same welcoming and accepting vibe as dance mission. The people who check us into classes have always been really nice to me and on a Saturday (well everyday) it's just nice to be treated well. I take Alhassane Camara's west African class and Portsha Jefferson's Haitian class on Saturdays. The live drumming is pretty amazing. I love the way they both teach... it's very different styles but I love and appreciate both. I like watching Alhassane's movement... and how he demonstrates and teaches with movement is pretty rad. I love that Portsha explains what type of dance we're learning that day from Kongo to Mae. I like that she talks about where each movement comes from and what the meaning behind it means. Both classes are pretty aerobic in my opinion. Bring lots of water and a towel if you sweat a lot like me. I can't wait for Saturday!

There's several class types for all genres (kpop, hip hop, popping, jazz funk, house) - for different levels! So many teachers to choose from, recently I've been taking Jepoy's Beg Hip Hop on Friday nights and they've been so fun! I plan to take others! Each class is $25 unless there's a special guest, and you can book the class online or do a drop in when you're there (They accept Venmo on site!) I typically book day of, but best to book in advance when it comes to special guests. I wish there were class packs of some sort because I would love to come more consistently. Parking is pretty easy on Fri nights, but I can't speak for the other days, as it is located in the city. They also have spring performance workshops, which I plan to do in the future! I'm excited to keep coming back!

I used to come a few years ago, and I recently started coming back. I was pleasantly surprised because the current batch of teachers is much better than it was before. I took Eddie Mina's class on 6/24/26, and I absolutely loved it. The vibes were great, the choreography was taught thoroughly, and Eddie is an excellent instructor. I'm only taking off one star because I wish students were more aware of dance class etiquette. I understand that dance classes are supposed to be fun, but constantly joking, talking, and being unfocused with your group of friends while the instructor is teaching is disrespectful (not only to the teacher, but also to everyone else who paid to be there and is trying to learn the choreography) It was distracting enough that it made me hesitate to come back to this instructor's class if his crowd of students continues to be like this. (I didn't experience this in Austin's class, so I think the crowd varies by the teacher) In LA, most dance studios and instructors emphasize class etiquette and remind students to stay quiet and focused while the teacher is demonstrating or explaining choreography. I think that really helps create a respectful learning environment for everyone. I hope City Dance Studio can consider reminding students about class etiquette at the beginning of class or by posting a simple reminder on Instagram. I genuinely enjoyed the instructor and would love to keep coming back but the student environment is the only thing keeping me from coming back.

After work I would go to ODC on certain days. I've been taking hip hop classes since 2007 at ODC. Almost 100% of the hip hop classes I enrolled are taught my Micaya. What I love about ODC is the studios aren't dark inside. Also the studios are spacious enough where you don't feel cramped. Even though I've taken hip hop classes for almost 20 years at ODC it doesn't feel dated. The one complaint I would make is regards to Studio B, which is where I take hip hop classes. Most of the studios downstairs have wooden floors however upstairs inside Studio B the Marley floor has too much grip or can be sticky. I'm surprised that throughout the years I haven't twisted my ankle or knee. Despite the Marley floor I enjoy taking hip hop classes at ODC.

They take the time to look at you, what you're doing, and help you learn, adjust, and get to know your body more. I'm an unlimited member, but the $25 per class (or whatever it is), is the best way to spend $25 in San Francisco. Not exaggerating. Jess is such an experienced coach. She moves like water. She watches your body, and understands how it works. She makes hands on adjustments. Being in class with her - I truly feel like I'm with a professional-grade artist. Power Barre is a must, for any dancer, any fan of Pilates, or anyone who just wants a lean, toned dancer bod. And Pop Jam is so much fun. I've also taken Jazz Funk with Tashi, which is the BEST way to start a Monday. It's beginner friendly, but you learn technique. She's fun, lively, hilarious. Every single person is beaming when they leave her class. Drenched with Anna is also a pleasure. She's a delight to watch. A true athlete in her flow. It's a real workout! Belly Dance with Andrea was a surprise to me. I had no idea what Belly Dance was until I took this class. As it turns out, Belly Dance is like a mix of Pilates and Booty shaking. I didn't think I could move so precisely, but Andrea is such a good teacher, and so good at explaining the moves - I believe she can teach anyone how to Belly Dance. She has a thorough understanding of the history, the culture, and the artistry. Hip Hop with Mahi - the most energetic ball of fun there is. She's effortless. Drenched with Diamond - another great workout, and a delightful way to spend a Saturday morning. I love to take my girlfriends and get brunch in Union Square afterwards. Also, the Rae Studios Showcase was SO much fun. You get training in how to perform as a group. The adrenaline is intoxicating. There are people who do four per season, is how fun it is. How many opportunities in life are there to perform? Rae Studios makes this accessible to everyone. The world is tough right now. We could all use a little more dance and light in our lives. On her first day, she reported to me that the jazz teacher (Isabela) did not allow the students to take bathroom breaks. She was also unnecessarily mean and said to one of the students she didn't care that they were tired. I wrote an e-mail addressing my concerns, and for some odd reason this same teacher was extra rude to my daughter the next day. She made my daughter do extra warm up reps although my daughter said her back was hurting from practice the day prior. At some point during class, she grabbed my daughter's arm very harshly. All the students in that class agreed that this teacher was unfair and unkind. My daughter refused to go back to dance camp and we had 2 days left of paid camp. Management refused to reimburse me and made excuses for this type of abusive/unprofessional behavior for this particular teacher. All other staff members were very nice.
