Amazing place! Great teachers and so many fun classes I want to try!…read more Unlike so many people I know, I never took dance growing up, However I have always enjoyed movement and wished I could dance actual steps. All that to say I was super intimidated to take the plunge now, in my late 30s. I started with a Saturday afternoon line dancing workshop. I was immediately put at ease by the friendliness and the diversity of ages, sizes, and shapes of people that I found taking the class with me. After my wonderful experience at the workshop, I signed up for beginning modern jazz. Tracey Durbin is an amazing teacher! I was up-front with her about my lack of experience and nervousness. She put me at ease by reminding me that everyone is here to have fun, period. I have now signed up for my second session and I have no plans to stop!

When I graduated, it was hard to find a dance studio to take lessons. Ninth Street Dances offers classes in a variety of styles, techniques, and flavors. You can take a dance technique class or a movement/fitness class. I've taken an eight-week hour-long modern and contemporary. I've also taken the dancehall workshop (one three-hour class) which was high-energy and a lot of fun. Most of the adult classes were at night, which was great to attend after work. (This was before COVID-19, of course.) Now classes are virtual. I recently signed up for a virtual mediation class that will take place for four weeks during my lunch break -- perfect while I'm working from home. Other classes offered -- 90's cardio funk, tap, ballet, bhangra, twerk, hip hop, afrobeat and so many more! Here's the link to the class schedule: https://ninthstreetdance.com/classes/

The level of instruction at A.M. is incredible, and the shows they put on twice a year are nothing short of spectacular. I'm also so relieved and impressed with the measures they have put into place during Covid times. The mask policy, cleaning measures - everything helps to put me at ease as a parent that everything possible is being done to protect the dancers and the staff. Lastly, the thing that has stood out to me the most is how caring the instructors are with their students. Even when it's curtain time, and everyone is stressed, I have seen Lynn and Natasha stop and take the time to straighten a tiny Nutcracker mouse's whiskers and gently dry a tear. They truly love their dancers!

The place itself is inside a larger building and in a nice location, close enough to the highway but off the beaten path enough to not be crazy packed with traffic. Sign up was easy and convenient online. Come prepared in tighter fitting (but comfortable!) clothing that covers your underarms and legs (to prevent burning!) and minimal or no jewelry. You definitely don't want to risk getting it hung on the silks! Oh and definitely bring some water. You're guaranteed to be a little (or a lot!) sore the next day. Jamie was our instructor and she was phenomenal! She was so fun, patient, and encouraging. As a first timer, this was very intimidating but Jamie made us feel like pros! The class starts with foundational elements: stretches, a warm up, then basics on the silks apparatus such as foot wrapping and pulling yourself up. We gradually introduced more shapes and the foot knot. The class flew by and was so much fun! It's truly an addicting workout/art form and Jamie's skills were so impressive. I can't wait to go back! Definitely check this place out and have a unique experience with friends, your partner, or fly solo!

For the best dance instructor around -- AJ, you are a rare gem who radiates so much light to everyone who has the honor of crossing your path! Teddy and I were SUPER nervous to start dance lessons (just a couple weeks out from our wedding), but you were so positive and encouraging and thoughtful in your approach to teaching a couple of adults who showed up dancing like baby deer learning to walk. You made it fun and easy...something we really looked forward to. It was truly one of our favorites activities together as a couple -- which says a lot from a couple who had never danced together before meeting you. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us and helping us feel confident and even excited to share a first dance together as husband and wife. We plan to see you again, but you should know that we'll always think about you when we look at our wedding photos of us dancing. , J & T
