I went to see if Molar 18 could be saved by a Root Canal but after taking the CBCT Scan ($200 out…read moreof pocket) and another bitewing PA X-Ray, Dr. Elizabeth Choybowski informed me that the tooth would not be a good candidate for a root canal. She began talking about TMJ which I have never had and made strong suggestions to see a specific TMJ specialist across the street. Actually, Dr. Chybowski should have suggested seeing an ENT (ears, noser and throat doctor) where they could make an accurate diagnosis and do the necessary accurate diagnostic tests and so forth. Also, TMJ is not covered by Medicare and most private employer sponsored health insurance. I appreciated the fact Dr. Chybowski was honest in telling me that my tooth would be better off being extracted which they do not handle. But I did want to speak with Dr. Choyboyski a bit further and she seemed very hurried and left. So I made my own appointment with an Oral Surgeon at Great Midwest Oral Surgery. I asked WI Endodontics-Mayfair to send the CBCT Scan as well as the PA Bitewing for that Molar to them. They did send the CBCT Scan but Greater Midwest Oral Surgery could not open the file and view the CBCT Scan. They also mentioned that they had three other patIents from WI Endodontic-Mayfair that CBCT Scans could not be opened/viewed. I called WI Endo back and told them that. All they could say was the Oral Surgeon's Office did not have the correct software to view this $200 CBCT Scan. No way was I going to pay another $200 for another CBCT at the Oral Surgeon's Office too. The Dr. Groeckermann, Oral Surgeon was kind enough to offer to do it for free given the circumstances. I did some research regarding this and found out in the State of WI, Endodontics are required to send the required software disc along with their CBCT Scan. WI Endodontic-Mayfair did not do this and attempted to place the blame on the Oral Surgeon's system. For the brief time actually speaking with Dr Chybowski and her insistence on TMJ referral, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend WI Endodontics-Mayfair nor Dr. Chybowski. It seems like the CBCT Scan is the money maker and referrals for TMJ aren't far behind. I also believe that Dr. Chybowski could see the amount of decay and placement within the Molar with the PA Bitewing....my own General Dentist could see this on her PA Bitewing of Molar 18. I just wanted to see if WI EndodonticsI could have done a root canal and saved the tooth, but it turned into another stressful, expensive nightmare for me.

Dr. Nencka had X-rays done, then did cold and percussion testing to determine which tooth was causing the problem. (My dentist wasn't able to determine which of three molars was causing the pain, but felt I probably needed a root canal.) He seemed to easily determine which tooth was the problem, one with a crown, and numbed that side of my mouth. Explaining as he went along, a device was added to keep my mouth open while he worked. I had no pain in my tooth from the procedure, only dull pain from keeping my jaw open so long, probably due to my TMJ problems. Finally the toothache and associated headache is gone after a fairly quick procedure! I remember my dentist performing a root canal on a tooth close to 55 years ago: Dental science, as we all know, and like anything technology based, has changed for the better in procedures like this! Although he could have recommended, and I really wanted, a redo of the root canal performed by a general dentist many years ago, Dr Sharma was very firm, polite and apologetic that a redo would almost certainly fail, clearly gave the reasons why, explained his reasoning thoroughly using CT and plain xray images. He then arranged for oral surgery consult in my region. I traveled over 100 mikes to see him and it was well worth the trip. I most highly recommend Dr Sharma.

My appointment was at 7:30am which is the time the office opens so I'm not sure how that would have all worked out. In the end, doing the required paperwork in advance is for the patient's benefit and it's always nice to know cost up front for anything dental (at least I think so). As for the appointment, I have to say I was genuinely impressed with the office. It's an up-to-date facility in an unassuming office building. I was greeted by a calming waterfall when the elevator doors opened, a friendly receptionist offered me water and the bathroom even had essential oil spray. Oh and there was an aquarium in the waiting room! The equipment used for scans was all very clean and felt state of the art. I saw Dr. Zielinski. I found him to be knowledgeable and straight forward. I will say he talks a lot so if you see him be sure to ask your questions and even ask him to clarify terms if you need to. I recently completed a tooth implant process that took several months (remove 40-year old crown, bone graft, wait for that to heal, implant post, wait for that to heal, implant!). The whole process was about as painless as it could possibly be. One of the things I like best about Elmbrook Family Dental is that they explain things clearly -- throughout the process Dr. Plecas explained each step, what the options were, what he thought the best option would be, and why. Knowing about the bone graft was especially important to me, and seeing what the part of the implant would be and how it all went together was cool. I was initially concerned because my son's wedding was coming up, and I didn't want to have a big hole in my mouth for pictures. Dr. Plecas discussed options with me -- the full process wouldn't be complete before the wedding. If I wanted, we could have gotten a temporary fake tooth there, but he thought I should wait and see how it looked. Once the tooth was removed I found that the space wasn't very noticeable at all. I'm very glad that I didn't spend the extra money on a temporary tooth! It feels like we know everyone there - we've been there for years, and at times we had six family members going. My older kids only stopped going there when they totally left the area; while they were in college out of state they still went to Elmbrook Family Dental, scheduling appointments around their breaks. When I asked what patients do when they can't afford this treatment, he became defensive and explained that he couldn't provide services for free (which I wouldn't expect). I found a local (TMJ & Orofacial Pain Treatment Center) doctor who is excellent, fitted me with a night guard for under $200, and that has very clear patient costs for services after insurance, and charges much less overall.

I received a call that they are charging my account $50 for a "no show" and that they will no longer provide care to me... Over ONE late appointment! I asked if I'd ever signed a document acknowledging the $50 policy and was told that I hadn't and that the new policy went into effect about a year ago. They are sending a final bill and refuse to provide my medical records to another office until the balance is paid. This doesn't seem legal yet alone I'm shocked that this is how they treat their patients. I'm just at a loss for words and respect for this practice and the new doctors that are running it into the ground. The previous doctor was incredible and so kind. This is so unfortunate.
