He is an ok doctor. Its very apparent he doesn't prioritize patient care first. The way he measures stress is based on three things: do you have a job, can you buy food and do you have a roof over your head. He seems to stick to those metrics alone. He seems unaware of sub factors like stress at work, ability to pay bills or actual housing situation. All other factors seem to be disregarded all together. Furthermore; having to write an evaluation or doctors note seems to be an inconvenience to him, also including irrelevant opinions based on how he feels unrelated to medical evaluation. He may be a good doctor for some but i encourage anyone to look elsewhere if they don't feel Dr. Hwang has their best medical interests in mind. I have been seeing Dr. Hwang for more than a decade. I am updating my review so that others can see it, as I last reviewed him 2012. I have only had extremely positive things to say about Dr. Hwang. He listens carefully and seems to care about my overall well being as a person and a patient. We have dealt with a number of complex health issues together and he has always been willing to hear ideas and my concerns, referring when necessary to excellent physicians and offering advice on many things including weight loss (suggesting Jumpstart, for example) MANY years ago). While it's true that it used to be sometimes dificult to get the office on the phone, they have massively improved this over the last year and they are responsive on the message app through My Health Online. I would encourage anyone seeking a primary care physician to try him. Choice of doctor is very personal and personality driven on both sides. I consider myself a reasonable person - professional but also demanding - and Dr. Hwang has always pleased me with his care, attention and timely appointments. read more

My PCP moved on and I had to find a new one. The PCP I selected didn't have any appointments until late September, so Sutter booked me with Dr. Hwang for persistent back pain. I felt like I was back at Kaiser. He didn't really listen to or address my concerns, said my back MRI was fine so the pain I was feeling couldn't be from what I thought it was, and overall he appeared to be under a severe time crunch. I thought he stepped out of the room for a moment, but apparently that was the end of my appointment -- because the nurse came in to give me my after-visit summary. I asked for him to return and take a look at my back but he refused. Since there are other glowing reviews, perhaps he was just having a bad day? read more

I left the Bay Area in 2019 but I must say I did notice a change in Dr. Hwang toward the end of my being his patient. His understanding and kindness went away and he suddenly seemed brusque and impatient with me and I could not really figure out why; I thought I may have done something to offend him. I had just found out about some pretty big (for me) medical diagnoses at a young age so some empathy from my PCP would have been very much appreciated. After reading some other, more recent reviews, this seems to be an unfortunate new trend with him. I am not sure what happened or what has made him behave in this way but I sincerely hope he rediscovers what made him choose and love his profession and once again feels kindess and compassion for the people under his care. His pleasant bedside manner was what used to set him apart from his other cold, unfeeling counterparts in the medical profession. His new, curt responses and general grumpiness is what contributes to the white coat syndrome that many people like me suffer from. read more

Wonderful doctor who listens and really tries to understand what you're going through so he can help you. I had recently switched to Dr. Hwang from my PCP of 7 years and I have not regretted my decision at all. I was having various health issues including depression and anxiety and Dr Hwang helped me navigate all my symptoms and we were able to come up with a reasonable game plan to improve my health. Since seeing him I've honestly been improving day by day. Like others have mentioned, he answers your emails and is active on MyHealth online. I am so happy I've finally found a doctor that listens, gives great advice and genuinely cares about my well-being. read more

He was emotionless and made me feel like he didn't care. He left without saying the visit was over and was also late to my appointment. If you want to be made felt like you are just another patient he has to get through for the day, then he is your guy. I thought doctors were supposed to care about patients. He seemed to want to just get through his appointments as fast as possible. I left feeling like I didn't matter. Unfortunately I have to change my review of Dr. Hwang based on my recent experience. As I mentioned, I loved my visit with him. He was extremely thorough and had excellent bedside manner. Unfortunately, they take the online health thing a little too far. I recently got back a concerning test result on the system and tried to contact them (via phone and through the system) . I must have called 5 times and left messages with the assistants who told me Dr. Hwang was too busy coming back from vacation and may not get back to me. While I understand that when you take time off, you need to catch up, a doctor's office should understand that when you get weird test results, days can feel like weeks to patients. In addition, he called in a prescription to my pharmacy without even consulting with me to explain why, how to take the meds, how it will affect me, next steps. NOTHING. In fact, initially he did not even acknowledge the need for medication until I reminded him how awful I've been feeling lately. If Dr. Hwang could not respond to me via phone, someone else (a nurse, another doctor, whoever) should have. I started trying to reach them Thursday and it's Monday and I have not heard a peep. I'm also a new patient so I thought the office may make an effort to retain me as a patient. If you cannot handle the workload, do not accept new patients. No one should have feel neglected, especially when they do not feel well. Taking my business to One Medical. read more

Do not waste your time seeing this doctor if anything please go see another one who actually cares and knows what they are talking about. Does not ask the right questions and overall did not take my health issues seriously! He also had a rude/cold attitude, very unwelcoming. I was so shook because I never seen a doctor who completely dismissed me and made me feel so unseen afterwards. I requested to see someone for my needs (specifically a referral) and they straight up said "they are just going to tell you what I'm telling you" and seemed upset that I wanted to continue with the referral to find out the underlying problem of this health issue. This doctor straight up said "I don't know what's wrong with you." What kind of doctor says that? They left the room with no goodbye or ask if I have any further questions or concerns which is super unprofessional. Wow... Just stay away please. I've also seen other reviews saying he just steps out the room. I hope if you see this - it's not that hard to be kind to your patients and help figure out what is going on with them and 2. A simple hello/goodbye and some mannerism, professionalism could help. read more

I just left Dr. Hwang's office this morning, and wow - I'm impressed. After moving the city about 2 months ago, I've put off finding a new doctor because it can be tiresome. I arrived early at my appointment and it was a pretty easy check-in process. Within 8 minutes of sitting down to start my paperwork - I was taken back to start the initial tests (blood pressure, etc.). Ten minutes later, Dr. Hwang walks in. He immediately put me at ease. He was so friendly, and I immediately started opening up to him. Since I had been putting off finding a doctor for so long, I had a few items I wanted to chat with him about. He took notes, and once I finished my monologue of symptoms - he went through each one and really took his time to dig in, and clarify certain things that had been bothering me. At the end of the appointment, we came up with a game plan of next steps and he referred me to a specialty doctor that he felt would be a perfect fit for me. Overall, I was quite impressed by Dr. Hwang's bedside manner. In my opinion, it is rare to find someone willing to take the time to really understand a patient's needs. My boyfriend recently went to Dr. Hwang and loved him, so we thought we'd finally hit the jackpot. Unfortunately that's where the great experience ended. After having his annual checkup, we didn't hear or receive any test results for a MONTH. Blood results come back a few days later, so a month is just ridiculous. Since the office had ample time to contact us, we began contacting them. 4/29/15 - Initial Lab Tests A MONTH GOES BY AND NOTHING.... 5/29/15 [Call 1]: BF left a voicemail. No one ever called back (figures) 6/3/15 [Call 2]: I spoke to a receptionist. She put in an order to have the test results mailed to us. And I requested to have the doctor call my BF to let us know if there was any issues with his blood tests. 6/8/15 [Call 3]: No call from the doc. I followed up and had to re-request the lab results. They admitted to not knowing why the doctor hadn't called us (said it was their error). And that the doctor would call this time. It's now been over a week and still nothing. They really need to get their act together. This is not professional. read more

He was the only doctor willing to take me and help me get my medical background done within one day so that I apply right away for my externships at the hospital. Ok, so I don't usually write reviews on doctors but Dr Hwang warrants one.... -He actually listens to your issues -Never rushes you -His office is VERY responsive to any requests i.e. prescription refills, referrals, ets. -He really helped me in 1 visit...prescribed medicines to alleviate some long standing discomfort and pain -AND He's easy to talk to Seriously, what more could you ask for?? read more

Dr. Hwang is my new primary care physician and I can't ask for better. Extremely professional, yet personable (he's the first doctor I've met that introduced himself by his first name), takes the full hour with every appointment to consult and answer all my questions, and I leave feeling better and knowing I'm going to be in good hands. He also pinpointed all my current health issues after the initial visit! It helps that his office staff are just as wonderful and kind and I love that they have an online system (they sign you up at the initial visit) where I can email Dr. Hwang questions, set up appointments, and even access my medical records. Recently I referred my coworker here for emergency care, and they were able to fit him in for an evaluation within 24hrs of his call. I like that there are several other doctors on site who can take over in case Dr. Hwang is unavailable. I also love that they take a wide variety of insurance plans including HMOs. read more

I've been going to Dr. Hwang for about three years now. I have to say he is the best Internest I have ever had. He is kind and empathetic and immediately puts you at ease. You can usually get a pretty fast appointment. He also gives you as much time as you need. He's one of the few physicians I've encountered who's not an a clock. He's also incredibly conscientious and attentive. I had some anomolous blood test results a year ago. The cause was not immediately apparent. But he worked through the differential diagnoses and referred me to an world-class hematologist, who concluded that the anomolies were benign. Huge relief. When he makes referrals, the docs are invariably tops in their fields. And best of all, he responds to email. Heaven! His office staff is generally attentive and efficient. They are on a very good EMR system that has an excellent patient interface (myhealthonline). But it still has limitations in terms of sharing records with other providers, referrals to out-of-network docs, etc. Where that happens, you're back to faxing things back and forth which drives me crazy. Who has a fax machine anymore? It's like asking patients to use carbon paper and white-out. Net net, Hwang is tops. I'm frankly surprised he's still taking new patients. I'd have assumed he'd be full up by now. read more

I'll echo everything I've just read in the other positive reviews. Dr Hwang is my wife's and my primary for good now. They do everything that one medical does, but you actually have a great relationship with your primary care physician. When I had issues he talked to me by phone, diagnosed and called in a prescription. The second time something similar happened, one of the on call physicians did the same for me. Patient, thorough, well connected (with specialty doctors) and affable... what else are you looking for? read more

Def will not EVER go see this doctor!!! Wanted to order contacts online. The ones I have been wearing for YEARS!!!! I've tried on the ones she wanted me to try bc they were having a promotion on them. Didn't really care for the dailies. Called to have a script sent to me for the contacts I wanted. I was told that I would have to come in AGAIN just for her to look at my eyes with the contacts on. Why would I have to come in if I know how they are in MY eyes since I have already worn them for years! read more

Dr. Hwang is kind, takes his time with his patients, and is overall a great doctor in my experience. So why the 2 stars? The medical staff. While friendly on the phone, they do no follow-up and answered many of my requests for coordinating care with other doctors or transferring medical records from previous doctors basically in a way that said "that's not my job." It made transferring medical records an absolute nightmare (and a months long process), since they refused to talk directly with my other doctor's medical staff (in the end, my other doctor's medical staff reached out to Dr. Hwang's staff -- an even then Dr. Hwang's staff still lost a chunk of my old medical records). Several times I requested call backs for things and never got a call back. Or I would (politely!) express disappointment in the lack of expediency and the phone would "disconnect" -- that happened 3 times. On top of it, I requested information regarding the results of my lab tests and no one ever got back to me. This was hands down the WORST experience I've EVER had dealing with the a doctor's office. THE WORST. Several times I was near tears from the sheer frustration I felt dealing with people who would say things like, "yes, we'll get back to you" and then never get back to you and people who would say things like, "no, we can't do that" (WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CAN'T DO YOUR JOB??) I would go back if only for Dr. Hwang, but dealing with his staff isn't worth it. read more

I am providing this review regarding the professional demeanor of this doctor! Contrary to previous reviews of an "Amazing" doctor doesn't even come close to his treatment of his patient! I find this doctor arrogant and doesn't listen to his patient. He had an attitude of "he's too busy" to even hear what I came in for. I confirmed the chief complaint with the MA and it was correct, however, Dr. Hwang said he just accommodated me to refill my prescription. Why would i waste my time coming in for a refill when i can request that online with my previous PCP? I made the appointment to change my PCP and it was accepted, only to be told by this doctor that he is no longer accepting new patients! I do not recommend this doctor to anyone who is seeking a "real" PCP who'd listen to you. He's counting the minutes as he portrays to take notes. I have been fortunate in the past to have great PCPs, but my encounter with this doctor was totally disappointing or disgusting! read more

You know you are in great hands with Dr. Dan. He follows up on every detail, and is extremely thorough. He also has a cadre of excellent specialists, and coordinates care with them seamlessly. Dan Hwang is probably the best internal medicine doctor in San Francisco. He is thorough, attentive and listens to his patients. He also follows up on everything and his attention to detail when working with a patient is the best. I don't know of too many primary care doctors that will follow-up with their patients even late at night. As medical practices and managed care force physician's to be a less attentive to patient care, it is truly a pleasure to find Dr. Hwang taking charge of my primary care needs. He also has a broad depth of experience in both internal medicine, diabetes and nephrology. He is smart, personable and is the most patient centric physician I have worked with. I cannot recommend him highly enough as a primary care physician. read more

But then my friend received a letter saying that Dr. Hwang was no longer at Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation in S.F. I did an internet search & located Dr. Hwang's new office. He is now associated with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation & has an office in Daly City. When I called the number, I was informed that Dr. Hwang will be taking new patients starting Monday, Oct. 2. Already in a somewhat vulnerable state, I was anxious about having to re-introduce myself to a new doctor. Dr. Hwang helped transform an unfortunate experience into a deeply positive one. He spoke to me with intent and patience. He reflected back to me what I was feeling and experiencing. Dr. Hwang acted deliberately, gently, and professionally. I have always appreciated Dr. Hwang's prompt responses. I am a battled athlete and sustain injuries a couple times a year. He always seems to respond in a sufficient manner. Quick to make a recommendation on a call to action which is more helpful than a doctor that simply outlines your options. He is sincere in his concern for your well being and is pleasant to see out in the neighborhood. I have been seeing Dr. Hwang for over 3 years now, and he is a very caring, kind person. His medical care is excellent. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, so I completely trust his medical judgement. He takes time to listen to my concerns and is very thoughtful in his plan of care. He always discusses how he would like to proceed and makes sure I am in agreement with the plan. He has been responsive to emails and thoughtfully refers to specialists when indicated. Dan Hwang is one of the best internal medicine doctors I have been to in many years. He is thorough, and listens to what you have to say. I especially like that he is so friendly, has a good sense of humor and I didn't feel like I was being rushed out the door. Too many times I've waited to see a Dr. for up to an hour! and then only had a few distracted minutes of their time. I've only been to see Dr. Hwang two times. and he helped me w/ very weird skin condition, even though he is an internist. I had been to 2 dermatologists, who basically blew me off and I was very frustrated, so decided to try an internist. I just made an appt. for a physical w/ Dr. Hwang and I'm sure it will be done very thoroughly. I was seeing Dr. Tisi in the same office, but she no longer works Friday's so I switched to Dr. Hwang and I'm very pleased to have Dr. Hwang as my primary physician. read more

My husband and I had a similar experience to another reviewer. We both met Dr Hwang and like him personally. But we never heard back from him after getting blood tests done. So we called the office multiple times. Never could speak to him, just got random messages from his staff. Everything seemed ok with my results but my husband has high cholesterol and the first medication he ever took had a negative impact on his liver which is not uncommon in about 20% of people who take common cholesterol medications. He reviewed this with Dr Hwang, who gave him another medication. 2 months later he did new blood tests and the new medication had not only not lowered his cholesterol at all but had the same negative effect on liver function. But again never heard from the doctor. My husband called asking to speak to Dr Hwang each day for 3 days. A staff member said the Dr would call him back and of course he never did. About a week later, we got a letter in the mail stating that my husband's blood test results indicated that he has high cholesterol and should see the doctor for treatment. Furthermore, the letter stated that my husband showed liver issues consistent with drinking too much alcohol and should perhaps reduce his alcohol intake. Are you kidding? My husband called Dr Hwang one more time to try and discuss. He did finally get in touch with the doctor himself who said that he should continue to take the cholesterol medication as his cholesterol was too high. And, oh, that he should maybe stop drinking so much. My husband hung up. We are in process of finding a new doctor. read more
