I also explained that I have been a loyal client who has previously flown out of state to see my longtime stylist, but I was hoping to find someone local. I never received a response to my message, so I called. The person that answer confirmed the owner had received message and told me a person outside their salon would be a "better fit." I reached out to that person as well and received no response. Message received. The whole experience was disappointing and honestly painful. Looking for a new stylist as a queer/trans person already comes with a lot of anxiety around whether a space will actually be safe and welcoming. Sadly, this interactions let me know that my concerns were real. I can't speak to their intentions, but I can speak to the impact: I did not feel welcomed, wanted, or safe as a prospective LGBTQ client. I wish businesses could be more direct about who they aren't prepared to serve, because being quietly redirected elsewhere after explicitly asking for a queer/trans-friendly space feels awful.
