If you are lucky enough to have Dani and Keith take you on as a client don't miss the chance. The other day I said that going for walks with Dani is probably the best thing that happened to my pup Captain since I adopted him, and I meant it. Not only is she professional and reliable, she is an absolute dog whisperer. Captain isn't exactly a problem dog but as a rescue with a checkered past has some hangups, and Dani has been incredibly patient and kind with him. I've noticed a marked improvement in his behavior because of her work with him. They also say a tired dog is a good dog and Captain is exhausted after his days of play with Dani and the other pups. The final thing I will say about Dani is she goes above and beyond even the highest expectations. I routinely get professional quality pictures of Captain having fun at the park, and Captain got the nicest gift stocking for the holiday season. I've even known Dani to repair a fence herself when the city was too slow to get to it. There's seriously no one I would trust with my dog more than Dani. read more

I can't speak highly enough about Dani and her company. I was very selective about who I allowed to take care of my fur baby, Zelda the corgi... I even went so far as to regularly visit dog parks to get a feel for options. The following is what drew me to hiring Dani: 1) Dani loves my dog (and my dog knows it and reciprocates)! Dani genuinely delights in each and every one of the animals in her care. You can tell from Dani's pictures that she loves her pack -but I've also seen it in person: Dani loves what makes your dog unique, and whenever I visit the dog park she is the first person I go to to share laughs or seek information. 2) Dani protects my dog. Not only is Dani quite familiar with her own pack, she is friends and acquaintances with the other walkers and dogs that use the dog park. Dani is keenly alert and aware of situations that may jeopardize safety, and she takes actions to ensure risks are minimized -including confronting uneducated handlers if necessary. Dani takes charge, and all dogs (and humans ;) respect her as pack leader. 3) Dani is knowledgeable about dog behaviorism and she has helped my dog curb some bad habits. When I first came to the dog park I had a few problems: My corgi would "yipe" prematurely whenever a larger dog would approach her to play. Dani helped to identify this as a problem (as the "yipe" sound may activate some dogs' prey drives and actually incite the aggression it's meant to prevent), and then Dani identified and implemented behavioral intervention strategies to train my dog out of the bad habit by setting limits and using positive reinforcement. My dog also didn't used to come when called at the dog park, but since Dani I am amazed at how much my corgi's recall has improved! 4) Dani helps me feel connected to my dog when I have to be away at work. Nothing brightens my day quite like getting a text/picture of my dog playing and having fun with her friends at the dog park. I get happy and excited for my dog on the days when I know she won't have to be home alone all day. Dani and her company also keep a facebook group where I can occasionally see pictures of my dog and/or her doggy friends. Dani's pictures highlight the value I get from her service, and I more than feel like I get my money's worth. Dani's fees are very reasonable, and she is flexible to my situation. 5) Dani is responsible, reasonable, and responsive. In over a year not ONCE has Dani failed to follow through with the commitment we have arranged. In situations where Dani might not be available, her partner Keith takes over and does an equally marvelous job! In situations where my dog and I have to change plans, Dani has a reasonable cancellation policy (at least 24 hour advance notice requested) and she has been understanding and compassionate to emergency circumstances. Dani is good at responding to my text messages and she does her best to accommodate me if I have special requests. (e.g., one time I was worried something was wrong with Zelda's foot and she kept an extra eye on it and gave me her input). All-in-all, Dani's Barks and Rec is Zelda and my's top choice. I can not give enough praise to Keith and Dani for taking care of my two cats while I was away in Mexico on a two week vacation. My usual pet sitter wasn't available so I decided on Dani's Barks and Rec based on all the positive reviews and that they were local to my neighborhood. I contacted them about a month in advance to reserve time since it was getting close to the holiday season and I figured they would be busy. Before we left, Dani and Keith both came to my house to meet the cats, get keys and go over care instructions. I was impressed that they asked a lot of good questions and took notes. One of my cats is almost 19 years old, has a few medical issues, and I was worried about leaving her alone but Dani and Keith both gave me confidence that she was in good hands. The best. Don't look anywhere else. Dani and Keith have been taking care of our 8 month old bichon poodle Leo for 2 months now and we couldn't be happier. Dani takes him out every weekday for at least 2 hours. They are the sweetest people and I trust them with my little Leo. Dani always sends me pictures and updates me on how Leo is doing. She'll go out of her way to make him comfortable and happy. He always got car sickness but she went out of her way to get him comfortable by trying different techniques and now he is much better. Dani at Potrero Tales is THE best! She doesn't just walk dogs, she treats them like they are part of her extended family. She showers our pup with love, kisses, treats and let's him steal the pillow for overnight visits. You can tell she really loves all the individual dogs and treats them with the same care as if they were her own. She remembers birthdays and even got our pup special presents for Christmas. :) We are going to miss Dani so much after we move to the East Bay but will continue to use Potrero Tales for overnight visits. Before a big 3 week international trip, I struggled to find a cat sitter that made me feel comfortable. After surfing a lot of yelp reviews and sitters' websites, I realized that while most/all sitters had initial on-site meetings to get to know you and the pets, as well as any special meds or other needs, few guaranteed that the person you met would be the person who actually came and cared for your pet. Some specifically said you'd likely never meet that person. There's no way I would be ok with that. In contrast, Dani and Keith had great reviews but also did the work themselves. They both came to meet me and took very detailed notes. They documented the location and types of food, treats, and cat litter. They asked about my cats' behaviors and hiding locations and even where they liked to be scratched or groomed. When I was actually out of town, Keith sent me periodic emails and photos, updating me on how the cats were behaving. One of my cats was also getting over a lung infection and needed twice daily antibiotics for the first week as well as a daily pill for all three weeks, something Dani and Keith had no reluctance to handle. Right before I left, though, the sick one began refusing the "pill pocket" treats I'd been using but Keith worked with me via email to try out various alternatives. Ultimately, he went so far as to boil some chicken and use that to sneak in the meds. Definitely above and beyond what I would have expected. When I came home, my sick cat was happy and back to normal. The other, rather anti-social one, was also happy and healthy (once he forgave me for leaving). All-in-all, I'd highly recommend Dani and Keith. They were very friendly, kept me up to date, and handled the medical issues without skipping a beat. The next time I head out of town, I'll definitely be calling on them again. read more

I am SO GLAD we found Dani and Potrero Tales. I have a very sweet but shy/ nervous dog who needed a lot of care and attention and Dani is just the right person. She updates me with photos and texts after every walk and really keeps me in the loop. You can tell she truly cares for animals and loves her job. We recently had them take care of our cats and fish tank for a week while we were out of town. Dani and Keith both came to meet our pets before the trip and took very detailed notes. I found out about Potrero Tails (edit: now Dani's Barks and Rec) by way of recommendation from a different pet sitting company who turns out doesn't operate in my neighborhood. We have two cats, one of which recently had some medical complication but has since recovered. Nevertheless, we like to keep a close eye on him. I'm really happy I got that recommendation. Keith and Dani take great care of our cats, and are great to work with besides. They sent us pictures of the cats while we were away, and emailed over questions immediately when they had any potential concerns. They are such a wonderful resource -- we often stay in SF for a couple days and our two english cocker pups(1 1/2 yr old) are used to our 2 acre yard and wide open spaces to run around plus 3 mile walks vs cooped up city living -- They pick up and take the two boys to the doggie park or walk and my boys, even the timid anxious one, are so so happy and excited to see them and can't wait to go out with them.
