The fact that you can take a stroll before (or after) your meal in a UNESCO World Heritage site also earns it key points in my book. As I was commuting from central Copenhagen by public transit I was slightly concerned about the location. As it turned out it was extremely convenient and a pleasant 5 minute stroll from the train station which connected directly with Norreport. An amazing 8 course meal that was particularly fresh and flavorful. The lumpfish Røe was the best I've had, and it's one of my favorites. The lobster and sweetbread combo also stood out as world class.

One of the chef partners used to work for Jan Restorff, who knows everyone in fine dining around Copenhagen. Our server Johan grew up in the Faroe Islands like Jan Restorff did and got his job here because of Jan. One of the other chefs used to cook at Geranium and is the house mate of the head chef of Rasmus Koefoed who grew up in Orange County not far from where my father lives. We met Jan the day before and prior to that we met Patrick who used to work for jan at Formel B. Small world Copenhagen fine dining is eh? We were preceded by word from Christian from Den Gule Cottage, the other establishment down the road overlooking the beach. Because the path to this restaurant is literally through parts of the forest, one of the cooks from Den Gule walked us over. How much hospitality is that? When we arrived we were immediately greeted by Johan and secondly by Lars, the other partner. We sat outside, had some bubbly and a few small bites, enjoying the vast tip of the forest before heading inside for the main meal. This little red hut is from architecture of years past and the owners after looking for space in Copenhagen proper fell in love with the two buildings not too far from each other in Klampenborg. Altered to contain modern functional kitchens, they put a lot of heart into making high quality food in both establishments. As surprised as anyone they achieved a Michelin star here just the end of last year and the food shows. After looking at the menu we couldn't not get everything to make a full tasting menu. It was our last meal after all... Food: Salted mackerel, smoked cheese, cucumber and radish. Lobster, peas, mint and almonds. Danish summer tomatoes. Rabbit, fennel and green strawberries. Cascina Riveri, Birbet, Monteu, Roero. 2010 Rustenberg, Straw wine, coastal region. Phenomenal. Past histories at Geranium and Søllerød Kro cooking definitely shows. Not quite the ultra modern of the former or too French driven like the latter, but utterly delicious in their own style, just like the funky building. If you go here you should explore the space. Hit the upstairs restroom and see the cool slightly psychedelic paintings and obviously the views of nature all around. They have an interesting hallway that they built leading to a side building where the service station and kitchen reside. The service from Lars and Johan is extremely warm and comfortable, Throughout the night we chatted with them extensively about Danish cuisines new movement, what they love, the classics and things like why they love Danish lunch but not so much traditional dinner. We ended up there well past midnight even though we showed up at 7.30. We ran through the dark forest with cell phone light because we had to catch the last two trains at the station which never came (that's a whole other story). Even Johan got caught in that scenario. The walk is safe, but because it was so dark it felt a little murdery. We were immediately greeted by our waiter and he took our coats once we reached the restaurant. The dining room is tiny and only has 5 tables. The night we were there only one other table came. It was very intimate. The ambiance is beautiful and the service was superb. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu. I can't remember every dish, but everything was so well balanced and incredibly delicious. The waiter always made sure to explain all of the ingredients to us and the process of each dish. The standouts for us were the tartar of ribeye and summer strawberry dessert. After having a bad experience with tartar a few days earlier we were a little wary, but it was amazing! Definitely one of, if not the best thing we ate during our trip. Overall, this is an amazing restaurant and it is clear why it has a Michelin star. I have been to a few one star restaurants, and DRC beats them all. Definitely come here if you have the chance!

And the rich chocolate dessert topped it all off. Walked here from Skodsborg along the edge of Dyrehaven (the Deer Park) and returned via the coastal road (Strandvejen). Part of the charming Gentofte municipality near Copenhagen, just twenty minutes by train, Jordnær dates back to Vildgaard's teen years when cooking gave clarity to troubled youth, his wife and mother of six children described as "someone to live for" serving as front-of-house manager who also greets guests and even answers e-mails. Part of ARP-Hansen Hotel Group's Gentofte Hotel, though nothing about Jordnær feels like a "Hotel Restaurant," it is after greetings from Tina that guests are led to a room both simple and elegant featuring light colors, glass, traditional lamps and a fireplace. Sharpened by three years at noma, though Eric's cooking expands well past fermentation and foraging in favor of ideal Ingredients that sometimes come from outside Scandinavia, opening bites are best enjoyed with Champagne and range from a delicate King Crab Bonbon or Lobster and Roe in a Tuile to a Tart of silky Tuna topped by a spoonful of Ossetra Imperial Caviar. Completely meat-free, though Eric is not a pescatarian, Jordnær's Rosset Waffle has become something of a signature piped with Fjord Shrimp Mousse beneath more Caviar while a Scallop skewered over White Currant Juice and its follow-up of "Langoustine Essence" are each two faultless bites then gone. Assertive with Oysters in a bath of Horseradish and Dill, then pulling the reins with Panna Cotta featuring Asparagus, Grapefruit and Lobster, Caviar makes another appearance as the Vildgaards' favorite Beluga Sevruga variety eaten in several spoonfuls amidst Miso and Black Currant Wood Oil. Never pretentious, Tina and Eric both presenting plates to each table even with Michelin starred Chefs dining alongside their spouses nearby, Amberjack arrives curled on clear glass awaiting Ponzu prior to housemade Bread plus Butter churned nearby. Taking no shortcuts, slowly cooked Turbot showing mother-of-pearl luminescence beneath a thin layer of truffled Farce, the Langoustine used previously for its essence soon arrives whole in warm Sauce before a sizable Takoyaki intended to be bitten in half with Truffle and Caviar consumed before using the bottom as a sponge on the plate. Well portioned with timely service, staff adapting to a diner's speed without a hitch, Dessert begins via smooth Mousse atop Berries before proceeding to a ring of herbal Custard and "Chamomile, Milk, Honey" that replicates a Honeycomb's appearance so accurately that one wonders if it is 3D printed. Not done yet, Mignardises highlighted by French classics and a warm Custard Tart served with Coffee or Tea clipped tableside, a final charming moment amongst dozens occurs as Tina leads guests to the exit and presents them with Bread, Butter and a signed Thank You note along with the menu.

They all tasted very good but again it is pretty Danish. On the individual items from the menu, the foie gras appetizer is the best and the lamb dish is also very good. This place makes their own green sauce called "klorofyl" (!) and it is delicious, they serve it with few dishes together. Overall, setting is unmatched with Oresund views, atmosphere is cisp and chic, and the servers do a really good job. The only thing on the menu was a three course meal for a fixed price and we selected that. The soup was very good, as was the main course that consisted of beef and mashed potatoes. We both thought the flavor was excellent with a unique mix of spices. The desert was good too. One benefit of this restaurant is it has a lot of windows that look out on the courtyard and street. After having our coffee we sat there enjoying the evening and talking; I guess we sat there for an hour or so without any disturbance from the waitresses, I really liked not having the feeling of being "kicked out". The menu's little and consists of a lunch menu, and a dinner menu. The lunch menu consists of different salads and open faced sandwiches. The choices are a blend of typical danish specialities, along with some french "bistro"-influence. All choices of the menu can be recommended but I especially enjoy their Fried Fish-filet with Remoulade on top of Rye Bread. Really Good. Crispy on the outside, Soft and well prepared on the inside. At night, go for their Moules Frites (mussels with french fries) or go for a steak. When you choose to dine here, you're guaranteed a decent level of quality and service. My go-to place at the harbor. Prices are also pretty fair in my opinion (98 kr for my Fish Filet at Lunch).
