Sadly, my insurance changed to Medicare about maybe 4 years ago & when I called to make my appointment, I was told over the phone that he does not accept it. I actually did not know Drs. could do that. In addition, the hearing aid did not work out. At the time, he was very interested in knowing why and how it could be improved, as he is thorough in his work and if I remember correctly working with the company on improving its development, which he had been forthcoming about and I took no issue with. I was devastated I could no longer be his patient, as we had built a relationship over the years, and he was aware my symptoms had returned and severe migraines had developed. When I called, the usual nice receptionist who I had know for YEARS had a bit of a "that's life" attitude, didn't offer any recommendations of other practitioners, and I never saw or heard from him again. I very much felt abandoned. To perhaps have received a call from his assistant, or at least been pointed in a direction that would help me instead of leaving me floundering for help all over again after years of suffering prior to finding Dr. Kohan, would have been a better way to handle the situation. I was searching for a specialist at his level (good luck), placed on forever-long wait lists w/the pandemic, now left far overdue for treatment. I write this more out of disappointment he's no longer my doctor, not malice. Dr. Kohan gave me hope. He said things like, "You have your life back, go live it!" (At the time I WAS doing well, but then it changed), and "We believe the research is about 10 years away from surgery to correct your hearing." But I ended up not cured in any way, and as we were trying other things to heal me, it came to a screeching halt. He was doing his job, and well. Dr. Kohan had so many patients that he may not have even realized & this all his support staff with regard to how it was handled. But your employees represent you, and these are people's lives. I didn't "get mine back." That being said, I am sure Dr. Kohan is still a great practitioner and worth getting a first or second opinion from. read more

I didn't visit the doctor, but called the office to see if the doctor treated patients with tinnitus as it wasn't one of the services listed on his website. The receptionist told me the doctor does treat tinnitus, but when I asked what approaches he uses (hearing aids, sound therapy, etc.) she told me that it's all on the website. Hmm, If he doesn't list tinnitus as a provided service then why would he have his approach of relieving it listed; it isn't on the website. If his receptionist is reluctant, and too rushed, to speak with me and provide answers,then what can I expect from the doctor himself? read more

I began seeing Dr Kohan and his superb office staff July 8, 2019, for treatment of an injury to my right ear sustained during diving and causing sudden hearing loss. This was a fairly traumatic discovery, but the calm, confidence and expertise projected by Dr Kohan enabled me to orient myself more effectively to the challenge. Indeed, upon first meeting Dr Kohan, I was deeply impressed not only by his professionalism and knowledge, but also by the certainty with which he prescribed an aggressive course of treatment that has already yielded a measure of success. I would give Dr. Kohan 100 stars (more!) if I could. Dr. Kohan (and his office) are extraordinarily kind and caring. Dr. Kohan restored my hearing. One day I woke up and heard a "pop" sound. I didn't think much of it, however after a few months, I noticed my hearing was greatly diminished plus I had terrible tinnitus which was driving me crazy. I went to see my regular ENT doctor, who had his audiologist test me and confirmed that I had 20% hearing loss. He said that I needed to see an inner ear specialist. He sent me to a top specialist (who I will call "Dr. Z"). Dr. Z read my charts from my ENT and said nothing could be done and suggested a hearing aid. I did try several different kinds but was not happy with any of them. I remembered my appointment with Dr. Z. I felt he was very dismissive and did not take abundant time with me explaining my hearing loss and options. I thought, before I resign myself to hearing loss and needing to wear hearing aids, let me just find the best inner ear specialist I can and get one final opinion. Thank goodness I listened to my higher self/intuition and not accepted that Dr. Z was a top doctor and stop there. Listen to yourself above anyone else! Thank goodness I did lots of research and found Dr. Kohan. He had his expert audiologist test my hearing. Then Dr. Kohan came into the room and said, "I have good news for you. Your hearing loss is conductive and can be reversed through surgery." That was amazing to me! Dr. Kohan did the surgery and now I hear perfectly once again. A true miracle. Plus Dr. Kohan is one of the kindest men I've ever met. He must be an angel. read more

I have been suffering with vertigo. My primary care Doctor recommended a Otolaryngologist/ENT that specializes in sleep disorders and had received unfavorable reviews on Yelp. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Kohan after hours of research: he was highly recommended by Organizations devoted to resolving Vestibular Disorders, also by a Meniere's Disease Support Group, and one Reviewer on Yelp - Not to mention all the Top Doc Awards. I did have to wait more than a month for an appointment, but is was worth it. Dr. Kohan took the time to give me a comprehensive examination, which included looking at the films of my brain MRI, balance tests, auditory testing (he has an Audiologist on Staff), and other appropriate tests. I was scheduled for vestibular testing during that same week; he called me and discussed the results that night. At all times I felt that he was professional, highly competent and capable. I was not diagnosed with any vestibular disorder, and I feel confident my vertigo is not ENT/vestibular related. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Kohan's for 3 years and have seen him approximately a dozen times for different problems. Dr. Kohan is highly knowledgeable with great humility, proceeds in a cautious style and is unfailingly patient in responding to questions. I have never waited more than 10 minutes to be seen with one exception. Dr. Kohan was in surgery and his staff notified me he would be delayed, one sign of his courteous and professional office. I went to Dr. Kohan with partial hearing loss ear, sleep apnea and other breathing problems. I also had that sixth sense that something was wrong, but I couldn't figure it out. After waiting almost 3 months for my initial exam, Kohan put me through a battery of tests, and after all was said and done, said "sorry, I don't know what it is. I can't help you." and totally abandoned me as a patient. Two months later, I found a lump in my neck that turned out to be a malignant cancer nodule on my thyroid that according to my doctor at MSKCC had been there for a very long time. It was one of two, the other was pressing up against my windpipe on the inside of my thyroid. Hence my difficulty breathing. The doctors were all excellent, caring people. The opposite of Kohan. If you're looking for a doctor who cares -- and has a basic curiosity about what he's doing, i.e., diagnosing your illness -- IMHO you'd be better off examining yourself. read more

Dr. Kohan is a wonderful ENT. I was suffering from what I thought was a terrible ear infection for more than a month. I had the worst pain and had tried different antibiotics and went to several different ENTs. My last ENT couldn't figure out what was going on and then texted Dr. Kohan who had been a colleague of his and he recommended that I get a CT of my ear to rule out cholesteatoma. CT confirmed the diagnosis and I went to him for follow up. I didn't have surgery with him simply for insurance issues- but he was the one that unraveled the mystery. Thank you Dr. Kohan!! read more

I saw doctor Kohan December 2019. I Was advised to get a hearing test for a possible chochlear implant. I am travelling from Philadelphia to New York so not the easiest commute. I get hearing test done. I had some tough interactions with the chochlear implant coordinator at his office, but after her March 3rd email saying all was good and that she would be moving forward to see if I was eligible and that she would keep me informed. March 3rd 2021 I still have not heard from the coordinator or the office. I just called them since they do not respond to emails and was told that nothing was done and they would have to start the process all over again. I feel that they don't care about there patients and definitely do not care to send an email saying we are behind and it will take longer due to the pandemic. that's all that was needed. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Darius Kohan. First, he saved my husband's hearing when he woke up one morning and "spontaneously" lost all hearing in his right ear. A friend recommended Dr. Kohan, and because we moved quickly, Dr. Kohan was able to perform a miracle and restore his hearing. We call him Dr. Wow in our family! I have been deaf in my left ear since 1-1/2 when I got meningitis and lost all hearing in that ear. Most of my life I had good hearing in my right ear, so I didn't need to do anything about my left ear. Three years ago I noticed a loss of hearing in my "good" ear and went to Dr. Kohan myself. I failed my hearing test. With the care, kindness, and guidance of Dr. Kohan, last spring I received a cochlear implant for my left ear and heard a sound inside my head for the first time in over 60 years. Another miracle! Enough time (1 1/2 years) has passed since I had surgery for otosclerosis performed on both ears by Dr. Kohan. I waited to make sure there were no side effects/relapses related to my hearing. The surgery has changed my life, both professionally and personally. I can hear better than most people I know. I was 65 at the time of the surgery. If you have the same diagnosis and are resisting hearing aids, run, don't walk, to Dr. Kohan's office. An admitted coward, the surgery was a total non event both times. Dr. Kohan is the absolute best! His calming nature & wonderful bedside manner put my daughter and both my husband and I at ease when we first met him. We feel so blessed that he is going to be taking care of my daughter's ear issues. Dr. Kohan is very professional and answers every question and concerns one might have. I found him online, as I noticed significant hearing loss in one ear over the past few months - turned out I had an outer ear infection but unusually (apparently) no pain associated with it. Dr. Kohan was very thorough in examining my neck, nose, ears etc. Then, his colleague Dr. Vazquez checked my hearing and explained every test. Turns out I have some hearing loss due to a hereditary condition - but Dr. Kohan had read my chart and patient form well and acknowledged that given my job and lifestyle, that I didn't need a hearing aid at this stage - which is my round about way of saying that there is no unnecessary upsell here. I wish all Dr. Office experiences were as seamless as this. Oh yeah, and if you go to see him, the office is through the lobby entrance on the north side of East 77th St (no exterior signage). read more

i have never written a review of a doctor, or for that matter, any review at all. why dr. kohan you might ask? because, from beginning to end he and his staff were outstanding. my first appointment was an evaluation, and thorough testing. after surgery was deemed to be the proper course of action, a date was set up for within a weeks time. the surgery was done at the ny eye and ear infirmary, and went smooth as a gravy sandwich. at this point, i would like to mention that the folks at the ny eye and ear infirmary were top notch, from beginning to end. post op was like a dream come true. bottom line: i am so very grateful to have been directed to dr. kohan and his staff for their caring, and professionalism. would i recommend dr. kohan? yes, in a heart beat. v. kerpel please note that this review has some how been attached to the name sarah l. this is a yelp glitch, as it is written by me, v. kerpel read more
