    Fresh pastries

I absolutely love the service here at Darkhorse. I was visiting Canada from the US and looking for a local coffee spot and I am so glad I found this place. Every pastry that was ordered was fresh, hot and delicious. I love the aesthetics of the place and how everything was neatly placed. inside and outside seating with available and it smelled amazing.

This Dark Horse Espresso Bar is in the "up and coming" area. I ended up coming here after eating at Famiglia Baldassarre next door and before heading over to Blood Brothers Brewing. The actual retail area is small but there is big back kitchen/bakery area. So now you know those pastries is freshly baked in house. The garage door opens during summer and if you want to have this curbside cafe feel, there are a few tables and chairs set up on the sidewalk. I found Dark Horse roast a little too dark for my liking. But it is still a great cafe to chill when you are in the hood.

This cafe is completely different from the other dark horses in the city. It's quiet, locals frequent it on their way to work or during a break, and the view is of industrial sceneries. I actually had a great experience - came in at 11am, the barista was very nice and chatty and I basked in the sunlight with my notebook and americano. The only downside is that it's only open during work hours so I can only visit during my off days.

This is a favorite spot of people who live or work in the neighborhood, being tucked down a light industrial street that most people don't even know exists. The big glass garage door opens up in the summers, with chairs placed outside, making for a nice place to read a book while you have your coffee. The street itself is pretty quiet (assuming a train isn't roaring by). This is also the central location for baking the yummies that go into all the Dark Horse locations, so the baking doesn't get any fresher. However, if you're super picky about coissants, you might want to pass, they don't have that Parisian crispness. I found the Americano wasn't as strong as the other locations, but it was still tasty.

    Americano and an egg croissant.

This place was just a couple of blocks from my hotel, so I stopped by after my morning workout to get an açaí bowl. The service here was friendly, but I wouldn't characterize it as prompt. There were other orders placed after mine that got completed first, which is fine- I understand a smoothie may be more straightforward than a bowl, but...read on to see where I'm going with this. When I got my bowl I was kind of disappointed that their idea of a bowl is actually a cup. Why? Okay, part of the allure of getting an acai bowl is having a bountiful display of fresh fruits, granola and other fixings. By serving it in a tall cup, it meant all the toppings were condensed in a more narrow opening at the top. But then, to take it a step further, I realized none of the toppings on the açaí bowl were fresh fruit. The toppings were shredded coconut, granola, almond butter and cacao nibs. All shelf-stable items that are fine, but kind of a coincidence that none of them are things that would take more time to prep. So essentially I got an açaí smoothie with stuff on top. I had wished I head read through the menu more throughly. When I saw they had açaí bowls, I thought it would include some fresh fruits- that's just been a feature of the hundreds of acai bowls I've consumed in my life, so I just assumed that was the case here. As for the açaí mixture itself, I wasn't over the moon for this either. I was getting too much of a lemon vibe, when I really wanted to have the mellow flavor of the açaí come through. Overall, the store is beautiful, the employees were friendly, but I just wasn't digging my açaí bowl in a cup. At $16.75 CAD seemed like kind of a steep price for a less than average bowl.

The menu consists of health bars, bowls, salads, toasts, wellness shots, coffee, tea, and smoothies. Note that the prices here are a bit higher compared to other smoothie shops. I tried the Ultimate Recovery Smoothie ($16.75) and loved it! Made with orangic blueberries, collagen, cashews, matcha, vegan protein powder, chia seeds, barmilk, dates, and sea salt. The ingredients were blended nicely, and it was flavourful, refreshing and filling, making it a perfect on-the-go snack. The staff was friendly and service was good. The Yorkville location has an airy but warm ambiance, with a good amount of seating. I'm giving 5 stars for the smoothie itself, but overall 4 stars for the experience because the case storing the health bars had a few flies in it, which was a bit off‑putting.
