I've been purchasing online for several years now (I live on the west coast) because I love the idea of keeping fabrics out of landfills and paying local women a living wage. I've purchased for myself and also for gifts. Sari skirts, ponchos, scarves, silk bags, and GORGEOUS yarns. And recently harem pants. (So comfy) Purchasing online means you can't choose the specific color or fabric. For the most part, they are able to accommodate my requests for colors. Order 1326337 My wife ordered from this company and received defective yarn that would not hold together. It literally pulls apart with no strength. After several attempts to contact this company with no response, my wife left a review so other people don't make the same mistake. Amazingly the owner replies by calling her a liar then admits that (Nicole) Darn Good "bad" Yarn had been selling defective yarn and added additional berated written attacks to my wife. Customer Service? Good Luck! This is what my wife said. She told my wife to send it back at our expense. My wife has documented everything including attempted calls and e-mail to this crappy company and is happy to supply a video of the crap that was sold to her for anyone to see. I have called many times and added a note to your Loop feed. Now I am trying to reach out to you via e-mail. I got 7 hanks of your Wisdoms Tapestry Yarn. I love the colors but HATE the fact that it pulls apart in the white sections of the yarn. This yarn is so weak in the white sections, that it makes it almost impossible to work with. I don't know what to do with it. I had high hopes of making something beautiful with this yarn but it breaks so often it makes trying to use it a miserable experience. Since I wanted to try this silk yarn and the Yarn of the Month club was severely discounted, I took the plunge and placed an order. The yarn feels very nice to the touch, but it breaks easily. I'm using the yarn from my first box to make a pair of fingerless gloves. The colors are beautiful, but because I'm working on several projects at once, they are finished yet! Since discovering Darn Good Yarn a couple of years ago, their skirts have become my go-to wardrobe staple. I love that each one really gives you two options, as they are double-layered so you can wear the layer you prefer that day on top. They encourage me to be colourful, which cheers me up, yet they are suitable for almost any occasion. There are multiple ways to tie them, including as dresses or tops, though I usually go for the simple wrap-it-around-my-waist method. The style means the sizing is very relaxed - the same skirt will fit someone who is around size 10 up to around size 20, just the amount of overlap varies. I've lost 30 lbs since starting to wear these, and all of them still fit me (inconveniently, that is not true of all of the rest of my wardrobe). Are there any downsides? Ummm... sometimes when they arrive they have a strange musty smell, but that's gone as soon as you wash them. If you buy directly you can ask for what you want in a general sense (e.g. blues / geometric patterns) but can rarely choose a specific item. (See note on FB group.) They are very varied in pattern, but all dry very fast, so they're particularly great for travelling. There is also an FB group for connecting with other enthiasiasts, but also for re-selling (great for deals on new items, or passing on any you may decide you're not so keen on). The other advantage to the FB group is that it hosts official sales (where you often get to see the exact item you're buying). Four stars instead of three because in the end, I actually love the project I made, but it was a very long road to get there, which was not my expectation with a kit box. I gave the mystery box subscription a try. My first reaction was the color was not anything I'd pick, but that's part of getting a mystery box. First and biggest problem: each of the three skeins had around eight knots. And they were bunched so it wasn't like the yarn had a maximum yardage before needing a join. I dived right in on the pattern included for the yarn. Next problem: the pattern was a reprint of a pattern on their website meant for a different yarn with no variation for this yarn. It was a scarf so I didn't bother swatching. I got well into the pattern and thought the fabric felt a little tight for a scarf. That's when I looked at the band and saw the recommended needle size was bigger than the pattern indicated. Ripped it out, started again. Got more than halfway through and simply hated it. The pattern was selvedged on only one side and so it curled in and the color variegation clashed with the pattern's stitch definition. I cut my losses and ripped it out because I knew I'd never wear it. Long story short: I could not shake the feeling that they took the yarn, looked through their own catalog for a pattern with a similar weight yarn, and put them together in a box without knitting up a tester. In the end, I ripped out three skeins worth of work. So why the Four Star review? Once I found a pattern that worked, the end result was a scarf I have worn every day. Let's just say I kissed a lot of frogs on my way to something that I love. The four stars here represent the destination, not the journey. read more
