I went here last night with some friends. We chose Darrell's because it looked divey and hoped that what we found inside would provide cheap drinks and entertainment. There were paintings of half naked women all over the walls, pool tables, a big bar complete with some homely looking regulars clustered around it, and plenty of seating throughout the place. The bartender was really friendly, but not in a pushy way. He let us know that they have live music there Friday through Sunday of almost every genre. I would recommend this place for a chill hang out, and I would definitely come back here. read more

When I first moved to Shoreline, I'd joke about going to Darrell's because it seemed to be a dumpier dive than the Echo Lake Tavern (yeah, that bad). My biggest complaint about Shoreline has been it's lack of good places to hang out at or find entertainment. But, now that it is under new ownership, Darrell's Tavern is awesome. I went on a quiet Saturday night. Everyone at the bar was super friendly, even (or particularly) the really trashed people. Dan, the owner, was bartending and really friendly. He sat and chatted with us for a while. Great atmosphere, which Dan is continuing to improve. He's really passionate about improving the bar and making it something to be proud of. He described it as a Ballard bar for Shoreline, meaning something young and full of individual identity. The music in the juke box was a great selection. The drinks were very well priced. I guess on Wednesday nights and Sunday nights there is live music. One night is more rockabilly and one jazz but I forget which is which. And there is an entrance fee those nights. I might go for the music, but I have to admit I enjoyed the chatty, open character of the dozen or so people who were there on a quiet night. I'll definitely be back; it is my new bar of choice for the area. read more

Old style dive bar. Can't believe it's been there all these years. The amazing thing is my mom used to be a bartender there and then years and years after that my ex wife became a bartender there also briefly. Interesting place. Not really for me. But people who appreciate that old time dive bar feeling may find it a comfortable place to hang out and play some pool and get a cold beer. read more

My husband and I stopped in here the other night after dinner for a night cap...we have been wanting to stop in here for a long time and we sure are glad we did because it was great! Dan the new owner was super conversational, witty and nice! His girlfriend was also. The prices are reasonable and the drinks strong! I loved the 60's chandeliers all around the bar! Very 60's but Dan also had flat screen tv's mounted so there was a good mix of decor. We have wanted to find a bar to frequent where everybody knows your name and I think we have finally found it!! I stopped in to take a look around and grab a quick beer on a evening walk and found the excellent Kevin McCarthy jazz combo on stage. They are Sunday regulars at Darrell's and are worth the time to drive north and check out. Bar was clean, no funky odors, clean restrooms, pool, darts, etc., everything you'd want. This bar was closed for a while due to the death of the previous owner. It was a great place even then, but he was very old and not too interested in turning it into anything other than what it was - a passable dive bar with a few regulars. It used to have stuff filling up half the bar, so it literally had half the space that it has now. Ben was a nice old guy and he shall be missed. I spent many a rainy Sunday talking to him at the bar when I was the only person in there. However, on to the new! Dan, the new owner is really stepping it up! He cleaned the place out, added a ton more tables and a stage for live shows. He's been doing a great job bringing new business in. The jukebox is changed for the better and though I haven't been on a live music night yet, I hear it's awesome. It's really about time that someone brought a great local hangout to our neck of the woods! Dan preserved just enough of the flavor of the old place (the bar, the retro light fixtures etc.) and a lot of newer modern features (not to mention it now has a full bar instead of just beer). As a previous reviewer mentioned the "plasma screen looking thing on the wall" is a piece of art that Dan preserved from the good old days. It's probably been there at least 20 years. The collection of old cars is gone from the parking lot too, so plenty of parking. I was STOKED to find out it had reopened. So So disappointed i was not able to come here during the Holloween Party. It has Live Music, Strong Drinks, a very friendly crowd. This bar has been one of my very own local hang out. Sure its getting a bit popular drawing crowds from outer neighborhoods, but change is good. Different personalities are nice. Im still waiting for one of those independent type of a woman who knows what she wants and has a job and her own place to plop next to me and say, " Hey You ! You belong to me tonight and I am going to buy your drinks all night! " I love equal opportunity and all that but I havent seen one woman yet that has done this for me so maybe it will never be equal....It would be nice though because my pocket is getting light and i need a few drinks tonight, maybe tonight is the night to find her. Darrell's is still one of my favorite bars of all time. When I lived in the neighborhood I spent a lot of time here, had lots of drinks, and lots of trouble. I'd make the Aurora Romp whenever I had money in my wallet and Darrell's was like a second home to me. This place is blessed in a way because if you don't live close then you have to travel to get here which preserved it from becoming hip and all full of dumb dick city boys and their cum dumpster entourage. read more

Stopped in here last night for a couple of beers, and I think The Cabin has some competition for the Best Local Watering Hole in the Shoreline/Richmond Beach. Darrell's may look a bit scary on the outside, but they've cleaned it up inside. Downside: No food service (One table had a pizza that they brought in from elsewhere). Upside: Pinball! (An Addam's Family machine that was in great condition). And a great jukebox. After putting in god knows how many $$$ into the Jukebox at The Cabin, where the music hasn't changed in 10 years, it was nice to have a different selection, complete with old school Seattle Grunge-era stuff (Mudhoney, Old Soundgarden, Pre-Teen Spirit Nirvana) and some Punk. The owner (Dan) was super-friendly, and let me know that they have live music fairly often, including Jazz on Sundays, and an Open-mic on Wednesdays. Worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood. read more

This bar stinks as a neighbor. I live on the same street just down the block. On weekends I have had patrons peeing in my yard after they left the bar. I have had people parking in my driveway. They are loud too, with bands on the weekend, during the summer you can hear them through out the neighborhood. You would think for National Neighborhood Night Out they would try and do something to give back to the neighborhood, NOPE! Please do the neighborhood a favor and enjoy this bar, but don't wreck the neighborhood leaving. If Darrells would only reach out to the community around them this could change some opinions. read more

Horrid. Horrid. Horrid. I've been here twice and have not had a good experience yet. I've heard that now that they're under new owndership that the place is cleaner and smells less like an old man's derelict apartment. It's hot and musky in the summer time. The pitchers have sharp edges from chipping. i'm not sure if it's safe to put yourself at risk of drinking glass, but I wouldn't recommend it. There's one staff member that has no people skills and comes off as rude. The bands are usually not worth the cover charge so I recommend not going on the weekends. The pizza is excellent, but they are small. Pool is always free but there is only one good pool cue. Heavy Metal Tuesday is cool. I also like the carpet on the walls. read more

Don't give them your credit card. If you leave it overnight, they swipe it and attach a 20% tip tip to it without your permission. Both Visa and Mastercard say that this it's illegal. The owner has no problem charging your card. read more

I think Darrell's has new ownership since I last visited, but I think the new owner has a great appreciation of the nostalgia of the place and that is a great thing! I'm glad I got to see Ben behind the bar and hear stories from his daughter about his life and times. RIP! From great service, good drinks, and free pool all the way to one of the best open mic's in the area, Darrell's has it all! The owner/staff are all professional, yet are SUPER friendly and ensure a great time. Local bands tear up the stage every weekend. There's a certain dive-bar feel, still with quite the modern touch. It also doesn't hurt one bit that its located right off the E line Metro. All in all, this is one of my favorite spots in N. Seattle to go out to. Best friggin dive bar in the area, they have a skeet shooter video game from the 60's that takes up half the wall, plus cheap strong drinks, good place to watch football, play pool & darts. The only place in the area that isn't a strip club that doesn't serve booze or a trashy casino. read more
