Especially that one dude... I have a friend, well not really a friend, more like an acquaintance. This guy is always in some sort of trouble, never has a drivers license but is always driving a beater anyway. The kind of dude that will bend over backwards to help you out but you're kind of worried he's also casing the joint while he's helping. Anyways, this guy asked me if I'd help him get some stuff out of his storage unit. He's behind on payments and doesn't want it auctioned off. "Bring your truck and we'll be done in a jiffy" ( this is back when I had a truck so probably early 2000s ) I swing over to the dive he's living in to pick him up. He's talking my ear off about some ridiculous Jerry Springer show type behavior and the sudden realization hits me... am I assisting in some sort of criminal offense? Are we on our way to rob a storage unit? I'm honestly scared, my heart is racing, I'm calculating my exit strategy if this looks to sketchy. Trying to keep my cool, I start tiptoeing around what he's going to do with the stuff we're saving from auction. He claims he has a better spot at "his old lady's moms place" I can't make this shit up! As we pull into the storage place I noticed all the cameras, oh man, I'm about to be on the worlds dumbest criminals. The dude tells me the code for the gate, from memory, okay I am feeling slightly better. We drive down the main aisle, take a left, and halfway down this row is his door. Well the door that opens the hall that has about 6 doors in it. The first key doesn't work. Beads of sweat form on my temples. The second key he tries doesn't even fit the padlock. Christ almighty I'm stressed. He pops in the third key, click. The lock opens. He reaches into his back pocket and grabs a small flashlight. He opens up the door and shines the light around the closet, relief floods my body. There's absolutely no way this shit belongs to anybody else but the guy I'm with! We cleared what he felt was important and didn't bother to lock up the rest. So like I was saying, everyone was feeling good, especially that dude in the corner that totally reminded me of my derelict buddy. The nerves were calmed and I recorded a great episode of the GoodTalkJosh podcast!

On a nice day, I would choose to sit on the outdoor deck rather than inside. Entertainment includes pull tabs, darts, pool table and TVs. Food menu is fat fry item only so we opted to just stay for a single beer and eat lunch elsewhere. Bar is full with several draft beer options. We slurped on a pint of Deschutes King Crispy Pilsner for $6.75 each. The staff and regulars were unwelcoming; not a single smile was offered or seen during our visit. It's safe to say, we will not be returning.

I know some people were more into the dive bar vibe, but me not so much. They offer food, but I have never tried it myself. There's pool tables, darts and other events like karaoke pretty regularly. There are lots of tvs so a decent place to watch a sporting event, but not the presidential election. People dress up for Halloween. It usually isn't too loud so you can usually have a conversation, there's some bigger tables available, but also a large amount of bar seating. I've never had an issue with anyone that worked here, bartenders are nice and make drinks as requested.

She had already scoured their channel guides to see which local teams she'd be able to show, so we shared a cheerful grumble about how you can't just get one subscription to cable anymore and see all your teams' games. I really loved how detailed she was with everything--which games are on, which drinks they have, how to make them, how they serve their food. She didn't seem like the owner (I don't think) but she knew the whole place like the back of her hand. I had a prime rib dip, which was just the sandwich you want when you can have a little cheat. Good chewy onion rings that didn't pull apart after one bite--you get batter and onion, both, every time. Jus was good, meat was tender, bread had a nice chew to it. The chef puts his name on at least one dish, and the bartender went on about how much scratch cooking he does. I asked if she recommended something specific, and she rattled off half the menu. We had our food orders taken quickly, as we stated that we'd need to be in and out fast. She accommodated us and told us that there was only the one cook. You pull up to kind of a crummy parking lot in front of kind of a crummy-looking strip mall, and you walk through a heavy security door. Nothing looks or feels fancy from outside. Inside, though, everything's clean and well lit. All the furniture is well made; there are lots of custom booths and the light fixtures all match. You don't feel a sense of luxury, but they built this place from the ground up, they built it right, and it's a nice antidote to the exterior vibe. There are at least a dozen huge flatscreens up around the room, at least downstairs. Evidently there's a whole upstairs that we didn't even check out. There aren't a ton of sports decorations, they keep it tidy--but the TVs are showing sports news or the game. This place must get thumping for big games. I can't even imagine trying to park those days. You get a warm greeting right away, with menus on your table in seconds. The menu is a lot of dependable old pub-grub favorites. Pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, chips, rings, fries, and so on. Thing is, they put a lot of thought and effort into each one, kinda going for bragging rights for the best in town on lots of simple dishes. They make the onion rings in house, I'd bet. You can add garlic and parmesan to your chips. The sandwiches are built right with plenty of filling. Prices are competitive, and you will definitely get full. Some people who love to eat love pub grub, and some of those people built the menu and designed the recipes here. We had a couple rounds of cocktails, and all of them did the trick. Made well, served right, good balance of sweetness, good flavors. If this place were a little closer we'd be here a lot.

This small building can be easily missed if you don't take the time to step inside and see what it's all about. It's got a fireplace and a couple tables inside, but my partner always stops off here for the whiskey. Personally I don't drink much whiskey, but he gets excited by the selection and the helpful people behind the counter. They can help you find something in your price range. You can also get a flight. They have special Whiskey Talk nights and tasting events. You can get also get other drinks and even order food to eat inside. I usually get the Black Rabbit Red wine, but there are a couple beers on tap. Of course this is also a stop for a passport stamp. If it's cold and not too loud we do occasionally sit inside. It has a quaint, cramped vibe so you may get to know your neighbors. If the weather is good we often sit outside by one of the many fires. Sometimes there is live music playing in the courtyard and this makes for a great way to spend an evening. But if you don't know you can also get your drinks to go and walk around exploring the grounds, just be aware you are not supposed to cross the street with your drinks to the pool/Nui Nui bar.
