Called and asked when they have availability for a haircut appointment. The owner couldn't give a clear date of availability. Supposedly they were booked for the day and for the next day. He said that one of the barbers might be able to give a schedule but that was not prompt. Also, I asked if they can do a fade style haircut but they said that they are not able to do that as they are not barbers but cosmetologists. As a result they cannot use a razor. Even tho they claim on their page that they do mens haircuts. Would not recommend this barber, as the customer service isn't so great seems like. The owner also started getting pissed and told me "I already told you why we cannot use razors and that we only do hair styling and cosmetology". Absolutely rude of him to say that only a minute into the conversation! The tone of voice was not nice. read more

Oh my god, he is wonderful!!!! Took amazing care of my hair and gave NO PRESSURE of coming back to him. I got a red dye to my natural dirty blonde. He made it look just like the color I showed him!!! I will trust him with my hair's color and cut from now on!!! So happy to have found him! UPDATE: over a year later, and Darryl is still the only person I trust with my hair. He recently got his own salon and I was a little scared that his prices would be too high and he would be too busy for me to continue to see him, but I should have known better. Although it has been about 3-4 months since I had my hair done with Darryl I'm catching up on my reviews and so better late than never. This is a mixed bag of a review as well I experienced positives and negatives. First things first I will say that Darryl was an unbelievably nice, polite, skilled and attentive man-stylist. Making an appointment was also very easy as I ended up needing to reschedule it on more than one occasion always giving plenty of advance notice and the appointment setter was always so pleasant and understanding. The salon is neat and clean, stylish and organized. You may be wondering why the 2 stars then and so now I'll tell you. Number 1 main issue: Short hair and uber short hair is an entirely different beast than long hair is. I used to have very long hair and so personally speaking this is a fact now that I have the complete opposite. Cutting it and all that is involved in it in order for it to lay and piece well is an art-form in itself. Another fact: Long hair hides a multitude of sins as well due to sheer volume; short hair will not and therefore the opposite is true; it shows everything. I've had both so once again I know. I have super short hair, it's no more than 1 1/2 inches at its longest part and when it's when cut and colored correctly I have an uber adorable pixie platinum blonde doo that returns daily compliments on both the cut and the color. Although I always explain beyond clearly when I call to make appointments for my cut and color that although my hair is uber short the color part of the visit isn't going to be anything like the shortness of my hair; IE: Its going to take hours to the tune of around 3 if history repeats itself as after wearing scalp to tip platinum blonde for a solid year now that's what history shows.... I also state that my natural hair color is 'stubborn' and taking my outgrowth of medium brown back down to the platinum won't be as easy as one will assume once they see me so to please allow for enough time for my visit. Also in my pre visit call I ask the stylist if they are accustomed and comfortable with using the shortest blade on a pair of clippers on a woman's head as that's what mine will need in the back and sides as well as finding out their comfort level with texturizing using scissors. My pre-visit with Darryl was no different than any other stylist I have visited since moving to Sac 7 months ago and so far have tried 3 different highly paid professionals who swear they know how to do platinum blonde coloring only to find out once I'm in the seat that well they've never did an entire head of platinum before..... Darryl did do an excellent job on returning my hair to pure platinum on this visit which is awesome as when I walked in it was a bright yellow/orange in color with spots like a cheetah from the previous colorist Monique at Elly Hair Salon in Rancho. And this visit with Darryl did take about 3 hours as like I had warned pulling ALL of the yellow out of my hair is going to take time regardless of what the "color wheel" says everyone's hair is different; blame it on genetics... The cut that he did was the area I was most unhappy with, I had sent pictures of myself to him before the appointment with how my hair was before meeting Monique including the cut and color as well as verbally explaining what I wanted and what tools were used in the past going so far as to say if you can give me what I want using other tools I have no issues as long as the outcome is the same. Well the cut ended up being choppy and boxy and did not blend well at all sticking up all over my head and no amount of product would get it to stay down..... I do understand that although I did do my best to 'prepare' him in advance for the time it was going to take I can't say as I blame him for having to see for himself and so he had an appointment or two scheduled that ended up having to be either rescheduled or wait until we were done he handled that well as well, however I could see that he was getting a little bit nervous at how long the process was taking and I began to feel a bit rushed....... I've learned a lot about my search for my new platinum colorist and pixie cutter here in Sac since moving here 7 months ago and that is this: Everyone specializes in long hair and color but few specialize in uber short female cuts and solid scalp to tip platinum coloring. You can see that he kicks ass with long hair, styling and coloring long hair so I guess the only thing I'd say is that if you fall into that category such as all of the previous reviewers have you'll be blissfully contented and happy... If your like me which I suspect very few are as I rarely see chics sporting uber short fantastically cut styles these days I would look elsewhere. read more

I think I might be a stylist's worst nightmare. I have been box coloring my hair for years and I never shy away from giving myself a bang trim. I don't usually like sitting for hours getting my hair done so I put off getting cuts for months. All of this abuse on my hair has taken its toll and I decided it's time to settle down and find myself a hair stylist for the long term. I read the yelp reviews and bought a groupon. I bought the full highlights + cut. Darryl actually ended up doing corrective color and a beautiful cut. He took the time to explain what he was doing to my hair as far as grey coverage and highlights. He also explained why he was taking this approach. We discussed ongoing maintenance and how often it would require touch-ups. The highlights are natural and thee color is closer to my natural color than it has been in 20 years. At my age subtle and pretty are the goal and he nailed it. The cut - my hair was getting so long and it was fun to have long hair but it was DAMAGED. I'm talking a good 3-4 inches of split ends. With the new beautiful color it would have been a shame to have damaged hair. He cut and styled it. I had started having breakage in the back which left an area even shorter than the rest, rather than cutting it all off he spun me around and showed me how it looked and asked if I wanted to leave it or trim it shorter to match. I decided to cut it shorter to match. I appreciated that he took the time to show me and get my input. Finally we discussed the plan moving forward. Micro trims to start to get some length back, free bang trims, color maintenance and some at-home deep conditioning tips. I feel great about my hair and I am actually looking forward to going back. Darryl is the most competent hair person I have EVER seen. I have difficult hair, very fine & very thin, and I don't want it short which is what every single hair person suggests for 'body'. Darryl has done a great job giving me a hairstyle I love and can do every day. He will give you great ideas if you don't know what to do. And if you want to do something awful, he will tell you it's going to be awful. And you can get your bangs trimmed free in-between cuts. By far the best hair person in Sacramento, maybe in the world. So first of all, I had an appt scheduled for another day but I realized that time frame didn't work I called & immediately the receptionist found a time that worked for me. The day of my appt I walked into the salon, it felt so alive people talking & laughing. They instantly offered me beverages, everyone just seemed so friendly they seemed like a family. I watched other people get their hair done & it looked great. I was scheduled with Darryl for color highlight & keratin which was est a 3 hour appt. He is awesome! I didn't have any idea really what I wanted just pictures from the internet I showed him & told him to do what he thought would look best. It looks amazing. He kept great conversation but gave me time to read as well! My hair feels amazing & looks even better. I even left with some goodies that were sold at great prices! I went in last Friday Dec 13,2013 to get my haircut for the first time by Darryl. I got the groupon deal 45 for cut and color. I never been to a place in sacramento before since I always go to the same person back home but I am soooo glad that I tried this out. I think a lot of people here will agree with me that Darryl is such a sweet and nice person. We talked throughout our two hours session together. He's sucha happy and outgoing person! I have been going to Darryl since I was 12 years old and I am now 24. He is the only hair stylist I truly trust with my hair. I went to a couple other hair stylists when I was living in San Diego and new York but other than that I have always gone to him because he is absolutely the best! I have really curly bi-racial hair and he always knows what is best for it. I use to go to him for all my school proms/homecomings all througout high school and my hair was always a work of art. He has colored my hair whenever I have been in need of a change, whether that be honey highlights for summer or majestic dark brown for the wintertime. First of all I'm not a review person. But this guy has kept me as a recurring client regardless of price. My schedule is extremely hectic and he is willing to work around it. He is very honest and patient with his clients and works to meet your needs. I have large curly hair and a lot of it. It can take hours. But he made me feel comfortable and even talked me out of deciding to damage my hair by bleaching it. Absolutely horrible! Rude and unprofessional! And this was from the owner, Darryl. I called to ask questions about the groupon and setting up an appt for my mom to get her hair done. She hasn't had her hair done in 2 years. My brother passed away and my mother has been filled with sadness and anxiety. She was feeling up to gettin her hair done. So i set the appt. I called and spoke to Darryl. I asked about the groupon that stated 58 dollars for a cut and all over color. He asked me if i had already bought the groupon. I said no. Then he said to me "dont buy that groupon, ill honor the price for you". I arranged for a ride for my mom because i was at work. She was very excited to get her hair done. When she got there,she was a lil early so she had a seat and waited. When Darryl finally got to her, he gets her in the chair and then says that she "has too much hair" and "this is a lot of work". He then told her that he would at least have to charge her 120 for her hair.. He didnt even discuss cutting her hair.. He acted like she was an alien. Touching her hair and looking disgusted.. My mother left in tears. She then had wait outside in tears for a ride. When i called to get an explanation of why he treated my mother the way he did. He said that i should have "read the fine print"!. He never mentioned there would be a extra charge. The groupon said that it was a 120 dollar value for 58dollars. So basically he decided he wouldnt honor the groupon... He never apologized. Not once felt bad about the way he treated my mother.. If he had of told me it might cost more then i would have given her more money..i just wanted her to be pampered for a hour.. My fault for not reading the Groupon. But he told me not to buy it and he would honor the price so i trusted he was a good businessman... Im very disappointed and i was so upset at the emotional distress my mom had to go thru. Especially this being her first time out since my brother passed away...All she wanted was a cut n color. She didnt deserve his rude behavior towards her gorgeous hair... I bought her hair dye and my daughter dyed her hair. She looked beautiful for the church brunch the next day. But beware of this unprofessional rude scammer who likes to make people feel bad for having thick hair and who doesnt want to keep his word. Extremely disappointed with their service. I purchased a Groupon for full highlights which feels like a rip off now. I was driving over for my appointment I receive a call from the stylist who was going to do my hair that she is running 15 mins behind. I explained to her and asked if someone else can take me at 12:30. She said her boss would take me and then I spoke with her boss and he told me that it will take over 2 hours. I was going to ask him if there is a possibility if we can reschedule but he just hung up on me and redeemed my voucher without notifying me. What a cheap! I was 5 minutes away from their location. He could be courteous to let me know if I don't come for my 12:30 appointment, he will be redeeming. I didn't get my highlights and paid for a terrible service. You should ask your staff before blaming customers what I stated to her when she called me the first time. I told her that I was on my way to he salon. Another thing that I find extremely rude was you could be courteous before redeeming my voucher and warned me on the phone about that. Seems like you are in this business to rip customers. read more

I decided to try this salon since I will be moving to the Carmichael area. It took 4.5 hours to color and highlight my hair. It was on the long side (but it was only half way down my back (and I'm only 5'2"), but I have never been in a chair for that long for my hair. They tangled/knotted my hair in four different areas that once they got to the last tangle/knot that I told them to cut my hair because I couldn't sit there anymore, they weren't going to get it out (it was bigger than a pea) and I was hungry. I asked for natural red highlights and I got fuschia. They bleached my highlights and then had to put red toner in my hair. SO NOT WHAT I WANTED. Not happy with this place and would never go back. Was not worth the money I paid. read more

I just had the most awesome experience at this hair salon. I had bought a Groupon and sometimes you can be met with less than enthusiastic response. However, as soon as I walked in the door, Darryl and his assistant Desiree greeted me with enthusiasm and warmth. After Desiree took me over to the chair and combed me out, Darryl came over and started assessing my needs. I was dealing with about nine months of color outgrowth and not having had a haircut (except a bad self job!) in about six months. They both were very confident and made me feel like they could not only fix my hair but make it better than it ever was. Darryl is a GENIUS with color and he gave me the most beautiful golden highlights and warm undertones. After a trim, Desiree styled my hair and I absolutely loved it. I found Darryl Hair Studio after my other appointment failed! He is Professional and I learned so much about my hair which I usually wear natural. I'm glad I found him on YELP. Free parking. I hate to give Darryl a bad review but it was well deserved. I came to Darryl with chunky blonde highlights with chunky dark low lights on the top half of my hair and dark undertone with a few blonde highlights pulled through the bottom. The services I requested were a base touch up on the dark, a highlight retouch, and lastly a keratin treatment to seal it in. I told him several times before he started to be careful not to let the dark bleed through onto my 613 blonde highlights. I also informed him that my roots would take a little longer than usual to lift to the blonde because of all my past keratin treatments. He talked over me and dismissed all of my requests but assured me that those are amateur mistakes that he would not make. Since he had good reviews I trusted him and finally shut up. That was a horrible move. Fast forward to the bleach. He applied bleach first and the highlights roots came out copper orange. He was going to put the keratin treatment on over that until I stopped him and told him they didn't lift enough which was as obvious as can be. He seamed annoyed that I wouldn't accept the half lifted root because it was going to take more time to re bleach my hair. Again, this is why I warned him before he started so that he could prepare for this. So he put on a higher level bleach that was so strong I couldn't breath and was coughing while it was on my hair. He rinsed it and the highlights were the perfect shade finally. I was happy. Then he went and ruined all the work he just did by applying my dark base to the low lights and allowing them to bleed through on all the fresh blonde. So basically when he was done I had leopard spots on the sides of my head. And my hair looked like I had grown out highlights by about 5 months with freshly dyed dark brown roots. I couldn't believe that after he practically laughed at my concerns of dye bleeding onto the blonde, he still managed to let the brown bleed onto my highlights the worst it's ever been done to me in my entire life! It was obvious what he did and he owned up to nothing. He pretended as if it weren't there. In my opinion he should have applied the dark color first then after went through with the blonde on the highlights. That would have avoided bleeding completely. During this process I had told him how thin my hair was and he laughed and agreed. So I told him I was hoping to not get charged the max for the keratin treatment since my hair is so thin. He never responded but shook his head agreeing. He was acting rushed the entire time but he only had one client come while my hair was processing. So we get to the keratin treatment that I have had done several times in the past and just needed a retouch. He applied it to my hair it took him about 10-15 min. And then he immediately blow dried it onto my hair and then finished with a flat iron. He didn't let the treatment sit on my hair for the 20-30 min that is required to effectively activate the keratin onto my hair. He rushed n never let it sit because he was eager to get finished with my hair. Then let's get to the payment. My hair looks ruined and blotchy like I did it at home. He charges me almost $600! He charged $350 for my keratin treatment on my very thin 10 strands of hair, and $250 for half a head of terribly done over processed highlights that looked like they had 6 months of new growth because he let the base bleed onto the blonde. I told him if the keratin is advertised as 300$ why is he charging me 350$ for it when it's so thin and it took him 15 min to do a treatment that usually takes hours to complete. He got attitude n said ok I'll give you that and took 50$ off and charged me $300. I didn't want to argue anymore with him about money so I paid it and left. Even after I paid the overcharge he didn't offer me my change back I had to stand there and say don't I have change. He really entitled himself to a tip. I Did make him give me my change. I know he thought he got over on me but in all actuality he missed out on a good client and potentially more money because I would have been a Reg client if he wasn't money hungry with absolutely no skills. He has much audacity trying to over charge me for a keratin treatment that he didn't even complete correctly while at the same time he boasted about being a keratin educator. Smh I would have tipped him well and even paid his $350 for keratin if he had done a great job and took time on my hair without complaint. I left looking worse then when I had came and terribly regretted going to him. He did my hair like someone who has absolutely no training at all and I WILL NEVER RETURN! Save your money and your hair go elsewhere. read more
