Das Meyer is THE wedding cake place. They made my wife and I's wedding cake and did a great job!!

For my husband's birthday I had asked for a Bailey's chocolate cake with filling (YUM). For the decoration, I asked for the Guinness harp. I was a little nervous when the girl behind the counter didn't know what it was but when I picked it up that weekend and saw it in the display area, it was more than I could have hoped for. I'm surprised to find myself writing a mediocre review for Das Meyer. I went to a cake tasting one Saturday with my wife and a friend who is getting her wedding cake from Das Meyer, to see what all the fuss was about. They both raved about the cakes, and I'm not much for heavily frosted/iced cakes, so I was dubious. I was surprised by just how good the cakes we tried were. Good enough that we decided to get my wife's cake done there. Picked up the cake at the appointed time, and was generally pleased with the results so far. Wish I'd been more specific about how I wanted the cake decorated, but that's neither here nor there. Pricey, but again not unexpected for a specialty bakery, and when your wife says she loves a cake, you go with it. We cut into the cake and were amazed at how dense it was. Unfortunately, the cakes inside - four layers, alternating white and chocolate - were inconsistent. Both white layers were uniformly dry, and while one of the chocolate layers was fine, as moist and good as we recalled, the other was wet, seemingly sodden with something. They commented at the tasting that they pride themselves on buttercream that isn't too sweet, and yet, this cake was overwhelming. All of the guests agreed that it was too sweet, and a good portion - over half, of the frosting was left on the plates at the end of evening. My wife is an expert on the subject of buttercream and declared this more heavily butter than shortening, and the way it reacted to heat agreed with that - again, neither here nor there with regard to the review of the cake itself. I would say that you should be prepared to be very specific when you order your cake with Das Meyer. The cakes at the tastings on Saturday are fresh, and lightly iced. If you enjoy them, be sure to request that when you order - this cake had nearly a quarter inch of frosting on the sides in an attempt to compensate for imperfectly thick cake layers. So, in summary - good cake, but inconsistent. Be specific about your wants and needs. Do the necessary work to ensure you get what you want out of the experience. Oh, and bring cash or checks - no credit cards accepted. read more

We used Das Meyer for our wedding cake and they did an outstanding job! It was everything we hoped it would be and more! The cake looked and tasted amazing! Das Meyer has good tasting cake but that is about it. The staff is very snobby and rude and unwilling to acknowledge or apologize when a mistake has been made. I placed the order for my cake about 6 months before my wedding and provided a picture of what it was supposed to look like. It was supposed to have olive green vines and blooms made out of frosting and real purple flowers were to be applied. Two weeks before my wedding, I dropped off the final payment and went over the specifics of the cake and design. When we began discussing the flowers, the girl I had spoken with told me that the flowers I wanted to use were very delicate and they were concerned that they wouldn't last the whole day. As a compromise, they asked if my florist would be willing to apply the flowers to the cake when they delivered it at 5 pm. We agreed that this would be the best course of action. The day of my wedding, the cake arrived without vines or blooms. After I returned from my honeymoon, I called Das Meyer to see what could be done. The woman I spoke with told me they could not have put the vines and the blooms in frosting on the cake without the flowers. When I informed her that having my florist apply the flowers was requested by Das Meyer, she blatantly told me that no one would have ever told me that they would still do the vines and blooms without the flowers. Honestly, the nerve of that woman! First of all, there was ABSOLUTELY no mention of Das Meyer's inability to draw vines and blooms without the flowers when they asked if the florist could put the flowers on the cake. Secondly, what kind of wedding cake bakery can't draw vines and blooms on a cake without flowers? I feel like that should be wedding cake decorating 101. I would not recommend Das Meyer to anyone, not even my worst enemy. They are either completely rude or severely incompetent. I went here to get my wedding cake. The cake was pretty but I was really disappointed in the cake itself. The top tier was white cake with chocolate moose and the bottom tier was chocolate cake with raspberry filling. The white cake was so dry and no one could tell it was chocolate moose filling! The chocolate cake was good but the raspberry filling was runny. The frosting was supposed to be butter cream but didn't taste good, not sweet just bland. Should have just gone somewhere else. I grew up in arvada and had only heard good things about them but I was really disappointed. We spent $80+ on a cake to feed 20 people and our guests preferred the dessert the restaurant supplied. I have been buying cakes, breads, pastries etc. from Das Meyer for over 25 years and have never had any issues. Their cakes are amazingly moist and no matter what we order it's perfect. Our favorite is the lemon poppy seed with lemon raspberry filling! We pretty much order this for any occasion. :-) Would never go anywhere else. As I write this I have to admit some qualms about even the rating I want to leave. While the cake was delicious and the service was really lovely, the cake itself was neither what I wanted, nor expected. We had discussed a taller shaped cake, round with square edges around the tops of the layers, three tiers, with the bottom and top in a meringue style frosting and the middle tier in a gold fondant. We received a squat three tier cake with round edges, shiny dirty ochre yellow fondant, and almost patterned buttercream. Honestly I think my biggest issue isn't that it didn't look like a cake out a magazine, although that sucked since it was almost 600$, (plus $200 for a piece of plastic "stand" which was lost, and to their credit actually in the contract, but still practically a round cutting board) but it was that at no point during the negotiations did the staff at Das Meyer ever say that anything I was asking for was beyond their capabilities. I brought photos with me to show what I wanted, and asked specifically if the fondant could be painted or sprayed gold. End of story: Really lovely people; delicious cake, but unfortunately, not a whole lot of esthetic skill. read more

Terrible Customer Un-Service Got a quote over the phone for cupcakes. As I was ordering 5 dozen the person quoted me a better price of 1.82 instead of the regular 3.00. ( i was also ordering a cake) When I drove over to place the order I was told I must have called somewhere else. I had the phone # written down correctly. The person said they wouldnt honor the quote. Now really? Guess they are doing such a great business they didnt need my money. I discovered this bakery a few years ago and since then twice a year I purchase the same cake: Lemon Raspberry Poppyseed round . It's quite delicious (5 stars). I've tried other cakes and they were Meh. Their wedding cakes look great, but haven't purchased one. The reason for my rating is the following. 1. Their Cash and In-State Checks only policy. They are stuck in the 19th Century and WON'T take visa/mc. Reason: "we're a family owned business and we'd have to raise our prices". Poor logic. Your cakes are expensive already, what's another $3-$7 for a cake/item I crave? Also, studies have shown that people spend 40% more when they use credit/debit cards, and the added expense of 2.8-3% in fees they'd pay (Uh, Hello...ever heard of Square or PayPal?) would still net them up to 37% increase in revenue. Sounds like a no-brainer to me, but they'd rather send you away or to the conveniently located ATM on site (getting a kickback?) than take CCs. 2. Phone LINE Busy a Lot. Have you heard of getting more than one line. Or, here's an idea: VOICEMAIL! It took me a while before I got through...was bombarded with a busy signal. This IS A BUSINESS, right? 3. Hot in the store/bakery. Who wants to eat in an establishment that's not cooled. It's Denver in August! The door being open with an oscillating fan isn't good for business. Maybe that's what you want, people to get their goods and go. If your A/C is broken, evap cooler not working well, smart business owners get a window or portable AC unit until the larger item is fixed. It feels like this family-owned business thinks things are good enough as they are. After all, business is good: cakes are baked and sold. Therein lies their biggest problem: Not Knowing that GOOD ENOUGH IS ALWAYS THE ENEMY OF GREAT. They could be a GREAT business if they'd upgrade their thinking and amenities. Das Meyer did our wedding cake and wow, it was beautiful and delicious! I got so many compliments on how good the cake tasted (we picked four different flavors - three on the tiered cake and a fourth for a sheet cake). They decorated it just how I wanted and it turned out perfect. I love that we get a complimentary fresh cake baked for us at our one year wedding anniversary by getting a tiered cake. They cost a little more money but it was so worth it! If you want really great tasting cake for your event, choose these guys! read more

As we pulled into the packed parking lot, we were greeted by gargoyles alongside the drive and in front of the chalet. We also noticed, everyone that walked out of the bakery had a smile on their face ( now that's a good sign!). Inside, the bakery was full of brides to be taste testing wedding cake. What a wonderful thing! We should have gotten in the cake testing line, but instead went up to the counter which was full of cookies and pastries. We tried the chocolate chip and cherry pastry and it was delicious! It had a dense bread texture with a ton of chocolate chips and a cherry pie filling center. read more

I would like to start with that my wedding cake ended up being beautiful and was very good. The reason for my review is we went into the store a few times and every time we got different answers. The first time we were there we were led to believe that with our budget of $950 we would be able to have anything we wanted that we saw on the display cakes and stay within our budget. The next time we went in to order the cake the person who was "helping" us was very negative about everything that I came in with. I thought I was over prepared with pictures, colors and the cake topper but EVERYTHING I wanted was met with "no." The example pictures I came in with were going to end up being way over our budget and the person helping us was not offering any alternatives. I wanted a four layer cake that would serve 150 people and they could not accommodate my request with smaller layers than what their standard cake came in. I was also told that my cake topper would be too heavy to use even though it wasn't heavy at all. Needless to say the first time we tried to order we left very frustrated and considered going elsewhere. The only reason why we stuck with Das Meyer is because we had a package deal with our venue. The second time we came in to order we received vastly better service than before. The lady helping us was positive and had suggestions if what we wanted wasn't going to work. She even had no problem what so ever with our cake topper. Over all Das Meyer has really good cake but their customer service could sure use some work. It is very frustrating to be told different stories every time you come in and to be told that everything you came in with as examples are not going to work. This is the first time we have ordered from Das Meyer and definitely will not be the last. I requested a white wedding cake flavor cake with Buttercream frosting for my daughters 50th birthday. We went through Das Meyer for our wedding cake last week. IT TURNED OUT GREAT! Friendly family staff who worked with us to make sure we pushed for our vision. You can go in any Sat and taste all the cake flavors - they even worked with us to create our own new flavor combo! I am reading these things and am amazed! Our whole family has been getting special occasion cakes from Das Meyer for over 10 years. We have never been disappointed!! Compared to other bakeries in the metro area they cannot be matched. They are artisans. While we have never been treated as described by others, I am wondering if there is a heightened sensitivity from some of these people. They are German and often we Americans find foreign ways abrupt. Beyond that I would recommend them to anyone and just ordered another fabulous cake from them for a friend's birthday. I give them 1 star because the cake is delicious, but I wish I could give them -1 star for customer service. My fiancée and I were interested in using Das Meyer for a 6 inch cutting cake for our wedding. Everything was great until we told them we are on a strict budget and because of that we are getting the deserts for the rest of our guests from elsewhere. After we told the lady that she became very disrespectful and rude. Told us that if we are not getting all our desert from them then they will not make the cutting cake for us. I get that companies have a right to refuse service and I respect that, but that doesn't mean I have to respect their decision. We really wanted one of their cakes, we just can't afford to feed all of guests their cake. We thought maybe we will come back in a few weeks and tell them we want a 6 inch cake. Tell them it is for another event, but we decided against that. We don't want to give Das Meyer another dime of our money, besides feels weird that I would have to lie about what the cake is for. Das Meyer is my bakery from here on out! I am a cake connoisseur; so my husband thought we would be all around Colorado tasting cakes before I would be able to decide on a bakery. We went for two cake tastings at Das Meyer and each one was exceptional. In fact this was the only bakery we tried because their cakes were so amazing. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered a cake from Das Meyer for my grandmother's 91st birthday in May. When my mother went to pay for the cake, the owner refused to let us pay and told us that anyone who has made it to 91 deserved a free cake! My grandmother was so incredibly touched by the generosity of Das Meyer. Das Meyer made our wedding cake on 10/04/14 and even did our "one of a kind" cake topper. We had our wedding right next door at Morningside Manor and everyone that came said it was perfect for us. So then fast forward... (and I mean really fast) to our one year anniversary. Das Meyer made our 1st year Anniversary cake (so we didn't have to do the 1 year "freezer" cake) and when we went in, both Hillary and Ally remembered us and gave us a hug. Don't believe them when they say they have gluten free...I am so sorry to say that I am giving Das Meyer a bad review for their handling of my daughter's wedding cake. We have purchased cakes from them for years, but needed a gluten free layer to a wedding cake. In order to even TASTE the gluten free cake, Das Meyer requires you to PURCHASE for $28 a small gluten free cake. Never mind spending the upcharge once the wedding cake is purchased. Sad to say that they lost $600 in business because of a $28 dollar cake (which we know only cost about $6 for supplies). No exceptions per the manager on the property. Leaves a REALLY BAD TASTE in our mouths! read more

Lived in Arvada all my life & grew up on das Meyer cakes & haunted house but since the son & daughter pair have taken over I will never return & I am sad about this. I would have loved to use them for my wedding cake (just like both my sisters) but after the way I have been treated the last 2 times I have bought cakes I will never even eat their cake at a wedding (which isn't great, many other bakerys just as good). I was told one price both times when I order & when I picked up was changed $75-100 more than earlier & the day of an event you cant say never mind I don't want the cake. Son is the biggest dick I have ever met, incraibly rude when picking up a $300 cake & then is hassled if you ask for help to car. Last design had way more flowers than the order so they could charge more, I told them I wanted them pulled out because it was a birthday cake & not a wedding cake, the son just fought with me aboutit & ended up pulling the flowers out my self & throwing away, what a waste. Doesn't listen to customers wants just concerned on how they can make more money on the cake. Fire your son & hire a real professional before you lose more customers! read more

Terrible company do not order your cakes from them customer service is terrible lack of training and agent messed up our order Elaine owner called and don't feel she needed to apologize that the person that took the order messed up and the day of wedding had to take the cake back to get recolored they claim the frosting was stripped off but their was over an inch of frosting on the cake that all the guests scrapped off and still gold flakes in the white from the wrong time and added correct color which still wasn't right but didn't have time to waste fixing this. Lady argued when cake was picked up and it was wrong color saying i ordered it wrong when it was the agent. Wanted something done Elaine was so rude and said it was immature for me to write a complaint about what happened and i was threatening her with writing a bad complaint when i just told her i wanted to let others know about the terrible service i've received and this was all over a $100 cake easily could have been resolved in another matter but Elaine, her son, and daughter that is the only one checking emails but is out on a leave could have taken blame apologized for the problem and offered a way to fix it since they feel short on the wedding cake. I've bought cakes from several other companies in Colorado never had an issue and love to write reviews on small companies trying to get out there so others can find them too but this one is terrible stay away from them! Also ordered strawberries and champagne left bad taste in our mouth but could have been all the excess frosting that Elaine argued was not there and i was wrong so i guess the inch plus of frosting is normal for their cakes so if you love frosting guess this is for you. A co-worker highly recommended this place and then a family friend got her wedding cake here, so it was a definite possibility on my list of cake choices. I went to the free cake tasting this morning and WOW! We were offered coffee, water and a table, right away and directed to the bar of delish cake. The owner was funny and provided some suggestions when we were debating between flavors. We are an indecisive group so we sat at a table for almost an hour going through the pictures of the different cakes and working through the different options. We had someone stop by our table every 10 minutes to make sure we didn't have any questions and provide refills, and not once did they seem to be pushing us out or wanting us to make a decision. It was always a smile and very helpful manner. I love that the flavors span across a wide spectrum so everyone can find one they like. Our favs were Berries in a Cloud and Orange Blossom. After all that sweetness we followed it up with a croissant with Swiss, ham, mushrooms and spices. MMM MMM good. Das Meyer does more than just cakes, they have the full package of service and some delicious treats too. We will get our wedding cake there and it will be a new weekend morning coffee n treat stop. read more

I went here for my wedding cake and was so disappointed in their service. I went in during their cake tastings on a busy Saturday and was told that they could delivery my wedding cake and I could have a private tasting. I called later to reserve a private tasting and they tell me that they don't do that, so we went back on a busy Saturday for another tasting taking time off from work. This time they told me that they could not deliver my cake because of the roads up to Estes Park. The road to Estes Park was finished and just fine to drive on which is why I was able to have my wedding there. I started to then just talk about the design of the cake and at every turn they told me that it was going to cost more or oh you don't want black frosting because it will color your teeth. I was looking at all the cake designs they had and every cake I pointed out they had something negative to say about how it would look on my 2 tiered cake. I never felt like a bride when they visited with me. My wedding day is only one day and I had chosen them, but they really let me down. A family business should be better with their service, but like family everyone is opinionated and there is no communication. I decided to go else where with my business. read more
