A huge thank you to Lisa, who was exceptionally kind and patient. She took the time to schedule a genuine, heartfelt phone call with me that felt far from transactional. I often deal with high levels of anxiety, and I was met with nothing but warmth and understanding throughout every step. Meeting the cats and chatting with the foster homes was a seamless process, and I truly appreciate that all the cats--including Linda--are kept up to date with their vaccinations and medical follow-ups. Linda has been with me for a month now, and she is truly my best friend. I will definitely be returning here when I'm ready to adopt another companion in the future!

My experience adopting a kitten from here was wonderful…read more These people really love cats - from what I can tell, it's a pretty small group that rescues and fosters on the side while working full-time. I fell in love with a kitten online, but there was already an applicant ahead of me, so I resigned myself to accepting I probably wasn't going to get him. But Pam was so great - she stayed in constant communication with me, and when she hadn't heard back from the other applicant in two days, she emailed me at 10pm to say I had first dibs (which I feel is fair) and that she'd make sure the kitten was at the adoption event for me to come see the next afternoon. So we headed over to Pet Valu in Clifton to meet the kitten and adored him right away. Kristen was so sweet, helpful and genuinely happy to see that one of her kittens had found a new home. She provided us with tons of info and advice, along with a Pet Valu adoption coupon kit. Their vetting process is pretty standard; you fill out an application with details about your living situation, current pets etc. In the final stages, you sign a contract promising not to declaw and that you'll send them proof of having the kitten spayed/neutered. The experience was quite painless (unlike interactions I've had in the past with some larger/more well-known rescue groups), and these women are doing a fantastic job. Definitely check out their kitties if you're looking to adopt!

They have volunteer opportunities to walk dogs, take them on dogventures, or host them over night! I had organized a group of 12 volunteers to become certified in taking these pups out on a dogventure. These dogventures provide the pups opportunities to explore life beyond the cage. We went hiking with two dogs at Scott's Run and and another pup at Difficult Run. One of the dogs we had taking hiking was adopted one week later! I highly recommend checking out their dogventure program! I am so glad that I found this. It's a great way for both me and the dog to relax and enjoy nature.

If I could give a negative star I would…read more I have fostered multiple dogs back to back for this shelter but my last experience revealed a DISTURBING lack of professionalism and humanity. After providing feedback regarding a major communication discrepancy, the dog program manager acted out of spite immediately. During a phone call, Michelle W. (dog program manager) repeatedly talked over me and refused to let me finish. She continuously mispronounced my name despite multiple corrections. Even before I could finish a sentence, her final words were "you can finish but at the end of this phone call, drop off the dog at the shelter" and "I don't need to have a reason. I can ask for the dog back because I can". They attempted to force a well adjusted puppy (one I had fostered for over a month) back into a cold kennel environment as a "power trip" simply because Michelle didn't like receiving a constructive criticism. It was clear she lacked empathy for the dog's stability and was prioritizing her own authority over the animal's well being. The adoption process here is abysmal. At the adoption event, numerous potential adopters who were interested in my foster dog said that the interview process is a joke. The interviewers talked more about themselves than giving the potential family to speak. A lot of them said the interview didn't even last 10minutes. Worst of all, I witnessed firsthand they use a lottery system (that's what everybody calls it at the event). They literally pull a name out of a plastic bag to choose the final family for the dog. Lastly, I find it interesting that Dawn (the executive director) responded to my google review asking to "connect directly". During my call with Michelle, I repeatedly asked for the contact information of a supervisor. Michelle lied and told me there was nobody above and she was the final authority. While the rescue claims their decision to pull the dog was for "safety" that concern only appeared AFTER I voiced my frustrations with their non existent communication which resulted me and my foster dog to stay at the vet for over 4hours. Was the "safety" they were worried about actually the safety of their own egos? As a rescue using an animal's placement as a tool for retaliation against a foster is very very disturbing and unacceptable. This organization is not what they market themselves to be. They claim to appreciate their fosters, but their actions prove they view them as disposable and animals as leverage. If you want to support a rescue that values animal welfare and basic human decency, this is not the right place. I would stay far away from this one.

I was able to meet her in person only a few days after reaching out and make my decision to adopt her! The process was super quick but not rushed, easy, and pleasant. Yuzu was healthy and happy and made herself at home with me pretty instantly. They also have a really cute facebook group where other people who adopted from the rescue can post their pets and show off how they are with their new families. Recently, Yuzu had some dental issues that prompted me to reach back out to the rescue for help with. Melissa was super responsive. She responded back from the Facebook page and truly went above and beyond! She was extremely kind and proactive as if Yuzu was her own kitty, prioritizing my voiced concerns and taking things step by step to also prioritize Yuzu's health and happiness! This organization misled us from the start. They were not honest about the breed of the puppy we adopted, and they failed to disclose serious pre-existing medical conditions. We later found out they didn't give our puppy his proper initial vaccinations or fully deworm him before adoption. They waited several hours after the adoption to send over his medical records--which revealed he had been diagnosed with hookworm and roundworm, and had only received a single dose of medication with no follow-up. After a vet visit, we found out he was also positive for tapeworm and Giardia. On top of that, he was underweight for his age. When we reached out to the foster, they admitted to feeding six puppies from one trough and "letting them fight it out" for food--completely unacceptable and neglectful. My vet said this rescue has a poor reputation for a reason. They do not properly care for their animals, and it shows. To make matters worse, we've been told they block adopters and delete negative reviews on Facebook to avoid accountability. That alone says everything. This organization needs to be held responsible for the way they're handling these vulnerable animals and misleading loving adopters. Please do your research and advocate for these animals who deserve better

I found this organization when I was ready to adopt after the loss of a senior cat, and was mainly…read moredrawn in by being able to go in to meet the cats and by how close it was to my home. The people that work at this location were all wonderful and I greatly enjoyed speaking with them. They deserve endless praise. I put in a general application and followed up to ensure I didn't need to submit anything further, and was informed that I was approved and asked to come in to complete the process. I replied that I was making sure everything was in order and that I had a foster in the home until the end of the week (for sure leaving over the weekend) and would have space after that point. I asked a few follow up questions about a particular couple of cats that I was instructed to ask by the adoption counselors. My egregious mistake was either following up in less than 7 days, or it was that I had dared to foster with another organization. Based on the emails that would follow, it seems that it's unacceptable to contact any other adoption organization or to foster (even though there's no information on fostering through KSC?). So I was approved around March 9 and it's now the beginning of May and I've finally gotten them to say that I am being turned away, with no stated reason, after an initial approval. In the meantime, whomever was emailing me was incredibly rude for the sake of it. I asked for clarification about an ambiguous wording on dogs and was told that this cat's rule on dogs is clearly stated and that she must go home with another specific cat from the shelter. Unfortunately, the adoption counselors had also thought wording was ambiguous and told me to clarify. And they weren't aware of her messing to go home with a specific cat. In fact, they told me she'd been there years and clearly wanted me to take her. Unfortunate that this person would rather keep a cat for years in that tiny place than adopt out. Additionally, there were constant comments that were an obvious attempt to take a moral high ground but didn't make sense as a reply to an email, and it quickly became clear that they were trying to insult me and insinuate that I am not capable of caring for a cat. I inquired about one not yet medically cleared and they made comments about how "expensive" her condition could be. My resident cat was on the same ear drops and the combined household income is far above what is necessary to care for medication. Lol we both work in healthcare. The scrambling to find any reason to deny my application after having approved it was impressive. And unlike some other reviews, it seems that no one was able to dig up any even minimally negative information that could be used to deny my application after the fact. It's unfortunate that poor attitudes kept a cat or two out of a good home. If you read the other negative reviews, know that they're real. I had plenty of pleasant interactions until suddenly they weren't. You'd think I insulted them by contacting other organizations, or that a couple extra emails is actually a burden. They seem to not truly be about the cats at the top level.

We saw adorable five-month-old sisters on Petfinder, filled out an application, and King Street Cats got in touch quickly. We set up a time that worked for the foster family, went out to Alexandria, and waited in a small closet-like room for them to arrive. I think it's wise for shelters to have a place where you can interact with cats you're interested in. While we were there, they put two other kitties in the room with us, but they weren't interested in us. The two girls we were interested in, Jacintha (whom we renamed Lilah, which is Hebrew for night) and Zaneta (whom we renamed Harley, after Harley Quinn), were as friendly as the listing indicated, so we decided to go through with the adoption. Since we were already pre-approved, filling out the final paperwork and paying the adoption fee was quick and efficient. If you want to adopt a cat from (or any organization), I recommend filling out an application before going. KSC is an all-volunteer organization with a small shelter in Alexandria. They have set weekend times for seeing cats, or you can set an appointment. They were clearly busy caring for the cats at the shelter, so knowing what sort of cat you're looking for is wise. They also remind you to bring a carrier with you when you go to adopt. I recommend throwing a toy in the carrier to distract the cat during the drive home. The only thing I don't like is that KSC is the primary name on the microchip all cats who leave the shelter have. But the adoption was overall a good experience, and our kittens are very happy in their new home.
