My mom and I come here once a week to spend time together and play bingo! There aren't many places you can go for a couple hours, have a chance to win some money and eat lunch for $20. We buy the 2 regular game packets for $6. We buy one of each of the extra games for $6, then another one of each of the three blackout games for $3. Then we split an order of their chicken tenders and fries for $5 each. The employees are very friendly. The establishment is clean. They also offer a rewards type card for different days of the week where you can get it signed and earn free regular game packets. This place is cash only, so plan accordingly. I had not been in years, and my son and his friends have been playing regularly with me on Fridays recently after a very long absence. I have been a regular at this bingo hall for a long time, playing almost every night. Sadly, I haven't been back in weeks, and neither have four of my friends, due to the unprofessional environment created by a specific caller, Jimmy. Our main concerns include: Professionalism: On multiple occasions, Jimmy has had a very strong odor of alcohol while working. This is accompanied by frequent mistakes on the calls--sometimes up to 10 errors a night--which disrupts the game for everyone. Hostile Environment: Jimmy frequently discusses politics over the microphone. He has repeatedly made derogatory comments, essentially calling patrons "idiots" if they do not share his political views. He also plays the radio in the break room at an excessive volume to broadcast political talk shows that mock certain groups, which is incredibly uncomfortable for those of us trying to enjoy our evening. Targeted Neglect: I've personally experienced and witnessed Jimmy intentionally ignoring "last call" hands from myself and my friends, even when we are clearly visible to him. It is disheartening because I feel unable to address this with on-site management, as the managers are Jimmy's direct family members (his mother and his aunt). Because of this conflict of interest, it feels like there is no accountability for his behavior. We miss our nightly bingo, but we will not return until the environment becomes professional and welcoming again. read more

Saturday evening session. Went as a group of four, with two first timers and two who hadn't played in a really long time. Staff were super nice and gave us all free daubers and helped us understand the two packet minimum which cost only $6 per person. They gave us scheduled sheets and explained how the games worked and the seven ways to make bingo are helpfully printed on the bottom. We bought a $2 power ball type thing and spent $7 more on single game cards each. There were a few singles we sat out but even if we played all it wouldn't have cost over$20! It was an awesome three plus hours for twenty bucks or less! One in our group got bingo on the last blackout game with the biggest prize, split between five winners they still got a couple hundred bucks, not bad! Good snack bar with fast, friendly service, a welcoming regular player next to us who gave us helpful tips, and a clean and comfortable space to play. If you're a casuals bingoer is suggest only 1 packet and the add on games, they go too fast for more than one packet if you're a new. Went again and was just as stoked. I absolutely love DAV Bingo, and while 5 stars might seem extreme for a random Bingo Hall, I assure you that is not the case. Things to note right off the bat, they are serious - NO OUTSIDE FOOD, and that also means no booze. Although they can't offer booze their food is super reasonably priced - albeit diner type fried food. However if you are like me and prefer the AM session - you can get their AMAZING breakfast burrito for $5 stuffed with eggs, cheese, hash browns and sausage. They also have delicious chicken tenders and ranch dressing... #justsaying. That's not all that makes DAV Bingo a fun place to go - it's the people that work there. They quickly make you feel part of a team, even if like me, you can only go a month or so at a time. Also, the regulars, they are so nice even if you sit in their seats - shout out to Ruth and Manuel. I have won 3x, and although it was miniscule amounts it was worth the time, and I will be back... save my seat! My family and I visited this Bingo parlor last night and had a great time. Unfortunately none of us won, but three of us came really close. The staff here were very helpful. Being that we didn't really understand what we were supposed to be trying to get on some of the bingo games that were being played, they came around often to help you out. The price of the paper packets were $2.00 each, minimum buy in was 2 packets per person which was a great price or one $5.00 paper packet. You can also purchase a computerized board for $40.00 which many people did along with having the paper as well. Being our first time here we were all given a free dauber, a gift they give to all newcomers. Each game went by pretty quick, sometimes only 4 -5 numbers would be called and someone would already have a bingo. About every 4 packet games played the workers would also walk by selling $1.00 sheets for another upcoming game that had two games in one. First game would payout $50.00 and then the second game would end in a blackout paying $1000.00! This place has a concession stand that has a lot of food items on the menu at very reasonable prices and the food looked really good. I also noticed people had brought their own cups to use to get free water or their own coffee cups to get free unlimited coffee that was located in the front near the cashiers. This place is straight trippin balls! For non bingo people out there, this is what I call a real bingo hall. Giant ass room, utilitarian table and chairs, and a tiny caller stand on the side of the room. The vibe is super serious and sterile, like a hospital, people are biting their nails trying to win the the big one. Or at least I was. It was really intense because it caters to regulars who know what their doing. They go quick and you have to keep track of all 12 of your cards, while the PA system is muffled like a horse race track. If you miss a number you are screwed. One of my favorite things about this place was the little camera that they have on the ball, and the monitors around the room. It's zoomed in fisheye, so when it shows them picking up the ball, you get the nitty get details of the callers finger nails. It's creepy like watching the Blair witch project or something. Very awesome. Also I won a shit load of money. I spent $4, had 3 hours of entertainment and won $63 bucks. Now that is a deal if I have ever heard of one. I used to go to Mississippi pizza for bingo entertainment. But I really hate getting stuffed animals and other knick knacks for prizes. Gimme the cash baby! This place has an entertainment style all its own and more portlanders should check it out! Oh yeah if you go late night. Bring your own snacks. Next time I'm brining fried chicken and Dr Pepper. The staff is friendly and the money supports Disabled American Veterans and other non-profit organizations - good place to start! There is a quaint snack bar and several vending machines if you get hungry or want a soda. You can even get table service once the game starts. Alcohol is not allowed on the premises, and there is a tent for smokers outside. The competition is not for the faint of heart, and a bit tough for newbies. It is fun once you get into it, but getting acclimated to the environment takes some time. Bring cash! You buy in with an admission packet, or basic set of cards. There are different levels you can buy in at. I spent about $13 for the afternoon, which included two sets of bingo cards, most of the blackout games, and a soda. You have the option to add more cards or rent an electronic dauber system, which is one of those digital heads up displays. I think the machines are an unfair advantage and pretty expensive for the casual player, but that is a comment on bingo in general and not this specific venue since the machines are available in a lot of bingo halls. Bring your own daubers or purchase them at the snack bar. In between the regular games they sell cards for early bird games, regular blackout games, and speed blackout. Speed blackout is FUN! One card and the numbers are spoken really quickly. On the regular blackout games, they start with a simple pattern for the win, then build upon the same card with another pattern for a win, then fill the card completely for the blackout win. The first announcer today mumbled into the mic and didn't enunciate his words, making it practically impossible to understand which game was starting and what the winning patterns would be. This is the second time I have gone to this bingo hall, and I don't remember having this trouble the last time. Fortunately the mumbler was replaced halfway through the game by someone who spoke more clearly. This is an awesome place for people-watching, and an entertaining way to pass the time. I really like the fact that they have games every day and multiple sessions every day. It's pretty easy to find and the staff is friendly. We ran into a couple issues while we were there. When we purchased our packets we explained to the cashier that we were new to the venue but not to playing bingo. She explained a few things, but not all the games that were specific to that location. So on a couple games you just had to know how they worked or you would be lost. Also some of the callers were terrible. The first caller mumbled so badly that you could not understand him. At all. Had we never played bingo before and not had a general idea how the game sessions go we would have been totally lost. The second caller was no better. This is the real deal, old school, win cold hard cash Bingo. Facilities - It's got AC, it's clean and bright. Lots of parking. Monitors are all around so wherever you sit you can see what's going on. Food - Ummm, it's actually good. Over two visits and numerous friends we've tried: fresh veggies, great hot pretzels, tater tots, BLT, toasted cheese, rice krispie squares, chicken strips, fries, chocolate cake. The hot food is not greasy, it's hot and made when you order it. I mean, let's keep it in perspective - it is a Bingo hall, but this food is surprisingly good. People - Employees are very friendly and helpful. The patrons are also very helpful to the newbies who are trying to figure out how there are so many ways to win Bingo. Make no mistake though - they take their Bingo very seriously (as indicated by the good luck charms and dobbers strategically lined up). Cost - You can play in every game for about $20. 2.5 hours of good, clean fun. Not so great - it's hard to hear exactly what the caller is saying outside of stating what ball came up (which you can see before you hear anyway). There is a lot of lingo that new folks do not have a clue about, and they mumble and/or speak so fast you can't make it out. You will need allies somewhere who know what's going on. Summary - This place is what old school Portland used to feel like before it became "weird" and hipster. It's an eclectic, diverse mix of down to earth regular folks. I have played here for years mostly because of the lack of other options. Although the staff is mostly very nice, I'm frustrated with a few things: 1. I can't tell you how sick I am of seeing the same people win night after night. Literally. I can walk in and know who's going to win simply by looking around. I'm never wrong. 2. Those same people who win ALL the time do so by buying the electronic bingo machines and putting HUNDREDS of $$ of cards on them. How do I know this? I've seen it several times. If that's the only way to get a win at DAV bingo, I might as well retire from the game now. I'm not going to be successful just spending my piddly $40. 3. WAY too many multiple winners. A regular game that pays $110, usually gets split more than 8 ways and the "winners" get maybe $15 each. That happens every single night. Over and over again. I can see it happening once in a while but good grief. It's getting stupid. I know that winning isn't everything and I do really enjoy playing bingo but damn, a win once in a while would be nice. It gets expensive and depressing to never win and watching the same folks win MULTIPLE times every night. To the workers: if you're going to talk smack about one of the other workers or players, do it away from where players can hear you. I had to listen to Courtney talking trash about another worker. I thought it was rude, mean and unprofessional. I like most of the workers and the snack bar food is good but overpriced. Other than that, there's not much I like about this place.
