Well isn't this a cool historic place. First of all, for me, you can order Sizzle Pie right in the theater! And there are countertops for the seats to put your food on! What? Never seen that. The interior of the whole place tells its story. It's been thru time and changes. The bathroom is the funniest. There is a sign on the door that says something like pardon our 100year old plumbing system, the tank refills slowly. lol... and it was slow. Nice venue to watch a movie in, especially since it's not a generic cookie-cutter big box chain. For one, it's in a lovely old historic building but the interior has been updated to hold a large screen and modern, comfy seats, and they always schedule a nice mix of films and/or special events. Decent screen size and sight lines, and good sound. Front lobby is kinda funky though, with some tight traffic patterns; I mean, we're talking about an old building here, so I'd go upstairs to the bar where it's a bit more spacious and dialed if you want a pre or post viewing drink or to chill. No matter how you see it, the Hollywood is a blast from the past worth appreciating and preserving. read more

I saw interstellar on 70mm film in one of the main theater rooms and let me tell you it was one of the most amazing experience I've had watching a film ever! The seats were very comfortable the sizzle pie was cheesy and crispy and that Diet Coke was amazing (from a local soda company which I love).I love how small and intimate this theater was I can't picture myself going to franchise theater ever again. read more

Hollywood Theatre really is a treat. The website gives a great list of their upcoming movies which you can book online, and the space itself inside is very clean. At this point I've been to almost a dozen movies here and the feeling is that I don't really need to go to an AMC or other chain again. I love that they have specials now and again like Kung Fu Theatre which I'm 100% on board with now. Definitely worth checking out. I had been looking forward to checking out this theater after hearing how great it was from all the locals. It did not disappoint. The building's architecture is absolutely gorgeous and the inside still holds all the charm of a 1920s theater. The staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming, especially when I couldn't get my ticket to display on my phone. After I dealt with that, I grabbed a small popcorn and headed upstairs to the theater. I thought I had taken photos of the interior, but I guess not. I'll have to remember to do that next time I'm in town. I had a great time seeing The First Omen in 35mm here. I can't wait to go back the next time I visit. read more

I love this theater. I'll slide right into the highlights: the theater is old-school funky and just cool. The staff is uber-friendly. Concessions are unique! Craft beer & wine selection, CBD water, etc. You've gotta try a bag of buttered popcorn with nutritional yeast sprinkled on top. The movie chairs are comfortable, recline, and have beverage holders; there's also tables in the theater around most of the seats so you can place food items or hang your purse. I do want to point out the restrooms are gender neutral and there is only 1 restroom upstairs with 2 stand up urinals and 1 stall with a toilet. It's quite close quarters, just FYI. read more

One of the best movie experiences in Portland! I've been coming here for 18 years and still love everything about it! A lovingly restored old time theatre with a street facade that is an icon on NE Sandy. The Hollywood Theatre runs a diverse plethora of 35mm and 75mm films, independent, classics and recently released. The largest theatre is on the first floor with two smaller, more intimate theatres up the ramp (second floor.) When I first moved to a Portland, having a beer or glass of wine at the movies was a fun unique experience! Made even better by the low price of admission and fresh popcorn with real melted butter. Back in the day, you could get all this for about $10. Now, 18 years later, it's only $13 and the still the best deal around. There are several beers on tap, this is Portland afterall! And always a hard cider for people like me who don't enjoy beer, and wine along with the non alcoholic drinks as well. There is a Pizza Window connecting to SizzlePie who makes a legit slice, and even Ruby Jewel ice cream, which I think is better than the Portland chain that has all the lines. The seats are comfy and stadium style so the view is clear. Plenty of room for drinks and snacks. I used to live in the neighborhood so would go catch a flick on my own all the time. If I went on a Monday or a Tuesday evening, I could show up just a few minutes prior, get my snacks and still get a good seat. This is a wonderful venue and I hope it remains part of the Hollywood neighborhood forever. It's a real neighborhood/community theatre. read more

A great movie palace that has pretty eclectic programming. It's in the middle of the Hollywood district so there are lots of great stores, bars and restaurants close by. The only negative is that there is only metered street parking so that can be a hassle. I've been there several times. Such an incredible building! I've been driving past I it for years, and always wanted to go inside. I saw they were showing parasite last week, so i decided to check it out. We arrived early, too early in fact. Box office opens 30 minutes prior to a showing so we grabbed sizzle pie beforehand. The inside isn't exciting as I thought, we were in the theatre up to the left when you enter. Not sure if the other theatre is the grander of the two? I enjoyed learning a bit of history before the showing, only 5 minutes of previews as well. Enjoyed the show, but the best part is the entrance. read more

I love feeling the history of this building every time I'm there. If you're someone who eschews main stream Hollywood movies, this is definitely your place. B-Movie trivia? Queer Horror? Beer-themed movie nights? 70mm classics? They'll have some moving picture theme that fits your motive. Standard movies run $9. For some showings and special events, expect to pay more. It's the best movie theater in Portland. Duh! The main room is the nicest screen in the city. It's a bit not up to snuff only being equipped with 2K Digital Projection but it also happens to be equipped with 70mm and 35mm Film projectors so it all evens out. I realized when I started writing reviews, the Hollywood Theatre was definitely one of the firsts. Boy oh boy have times changed! I feel like my old review is wayyyyyy out of date and is due for a major update.... First off, this is probably the best non profit organization I have ever been a part of. Since they had a recent change of programming, new program director, and going on a new direction, this has been my main theater of choice. There is something for everyone since we offer a wide variety of programming. I have now been a regular volunteer since April 2011. Since then I have seen a boost of improvements of the theater and the attendance has skyrocketed since. First off, long gone are the rusty and uncomfortable red seats in all 3 auditoriums. New are the donated comfy reclining seats from Regal when the Broadway Theater shuttered its doors. We held a campaign drive to help raise funds to have them installed. It was the fastest and definitely successful campaign that benefited all attendees. The upstairs auditoriums have more leg room plus tables in each aisle that have a similar layout to the Laurelhurst. The wide array of beers of tap and wine have also won regulars and newcomers. The prices are reasonable and paired with the best popcorn with real butter in town you got yourself a winner. Customers also have the option of buying caramel popcorn or the recently included "Masala" popcorn that are both made locally. Long gone is 50 licks ice cream and because of me the theater now sells "Scoop" ice cream bars :-). Soon pizza will be offered by "Atomic Pizza" so stay tuned!!!! There are many new programs that are offered monthly to appeal to anyone that may be interested in attending. The "classic" film series and "family" film series are welcoming additions. They are usually aired during the weekends at matinee hour so prices are totally reasonable. Live Comedy hosted by Ian Carmel is always a big hit and once a month "kung fu cinema" and "Grindhouse presents" usually have packed shows. For those - arrive early to guarantee good seats. Membership is the best deal for discount tickets and exclusive benefits such as free parking, free popcorn, and invites to special screenings. Renovations continue to take place with the "marquee" kickstarter campaign going in full swing. Volunteering has become the norm for me and it is great to see others like me who do like volunteering at the theater. For a while we had to suspend orientations because shifts were filling up fast as soon as the schedule would be available. That shows that the community has been a huge support for this landmark theater. I plan on continuing to volunteer and attend as a Hollywood member as long as the theater continues to stick around! read more

I really enjoyed watching a movie at the Hollywood Theater. It was my first time there, and I plan in going there more often. The inside is beautiful! It has a retro charm about it with a wonderful lobby area you can sit upstairs and enjoy a beer or conversation if you wanted. In the actual theater room, the seats were pretty comfortable and I watched a 3 hr movie. Half the theater has small tables which was pretty convenient if you have a beer or pizza. Also you can slide in front of the table instead of making others stand up if you are sitting away from the aisle. *but be careful cause if you do cause its not exactly level and you don't want to be spraining your ankle. They have great selection of craft beers for $4. They have pizza from the place next door. And with a matinee for $5, my movie was a definite score! read more
