Instead of apologizing and moving on with his day, he responded by telling me that I wasted his time. Huh?? You're an hour late ...clueless. The quality of Dave's work was largely good, and he offered reasonable, practical solutions to the items we discussed. Dave's follow-through with communication was very disappointing for 1. receipts/invoice and 2. follow through with minor touch ups. The moment we paid him in full--which we did the same day the last work item was completed--Dave became largely unavailable. While Dave explicitly stated he would send the receipt the same day we paid, we did not receive it and we had to text him three times over 5 days. He finally responded to the 3rd text stating he will send the receipt "shortly." It still hasn't arrived 11 days later. The lack of transparency is particularly concerning because the final bill was significantly higher than the initial estimate; though the scope of work increased, we have no way to verify the final costs without an invoice and receipts. We also noticed that the area he painted after work was done had white patches. We requested him to complete the paint touch up. When Dave finally responded to our outreach regarding the touch-ups after 5 days and 3 follow up texts, he informed us he could not return for more than a month due to a busy schedule. When we pointed out that we had paid for a complete job to be finished in a timely manner, he told us he could "send us some money for a paintbrush if it's that much of an emergency" so we could do it ourselves. Do not trust him, he does good work, but believe all the one stars, he is a liar kept my front door key , had to change a brand new lock. I worked with him for years, then all of a sudden, he messed up refinishing a countertop, said he would fix it, I waited 3 months , then he snapped when I yelped him. Dave replaced the rotted threshold to the front door and adjusted the front door's alignment as the door was not closing properly. He custom cut a piece of wood to fit the threshold and the result was very nice and solid. Will definitely use him again for these odd jobs around the house. read more

We did have a miscommunication on the initial date but set up a date/time the next week. He was professional and arrived on time, which I appreciate. Blocked driveway with work truck twice, blocked garage door with materials, I opened, and almost destroyed the garage door. Agreed to build a weatherproofed door. Charged $400 labor, materials cost went way over budget, did not verify receipt, did not finish job as agreed after payment was given. When asked to finish job, he said I was asking for free work, a "cheap f**k", and I should pay him $400 more to complete the job. He said I did not pay him the agreed amount, so he will not complete the work. Full review: NOT RECOMMENDED I hired Dave Gallegos to make a new door for the appliance area in the backyard in December 2023. It needed to be a wooden door that is weatherproofed. I made sure he knew that it needed to be weatherproof in multiple texts and after he inspected the job site. He quoted me $400 for labor and additional materials charge. I agreed to pay the discussed amount. He did not agree to any negotiation on the labor charge. He came on the agreed day to do the job. He confirmed that the labor price will be $400 before he started the job. I made sure he knew the door needed to be weatherproofed and insulated after he inspected the site. He initially said materials would be $200-250, but then said materials price came out to ~$375. Not much I could do when he was already out the door at HD. He did not get the insulation foam that was discussed. He came back, didn't provide receipt of materials, and went to work. I made sure to remind him that the door needed to be weatherproofed. He finished the work. When I went to inspect his final work: he had made a new frame for the door. Perfect. The door was not aligned with the frame he had made. It was slanting on one corner. He blamed it on the door and the frame. I paid him the agreed fees because I did not want to argue with a "professional handyman." After reviewing the project the next day, he had forgotten to put a weather strip on the 4th side of the door and forgotten the insulation. The door is facing full sun and wind. I requested that he come back to finish the project. He said that I should trust him and the door doesn't need a 4th side weatherstrip because it is already weatherproofed. I insisted that he come and finish the project as discussed. He told me I didn't pay a lot and that I should pay him $400 more because he has to come back to the job site. He called me a "cheap f**k" on text because I only agreed to pay his $400 labor charge and out of budget, unverified materials cost. He did not show me receipt with total materials cost. He insisted that he went above and beyond with his labor, the door didn't need a 4th weatherstrip because it doesn't rain in the Bay Area, it doesn't need insulation, it is a perfect job, and if I wanted more modifications, I should have let him know before he started the job and should have paid him more than what we agreed upon. After that, it was not worth the time and effort to question his work. I had to hire another handyman to finish the job as I had intended. NOT RECOMMENDED. Unprofessional in every manner and amateur handyman skills. P.S. - He also blocked my driveway twice with his truck when there was plenty of curbside parking. read more

We had a small leak in the shower stall of one of our bathrooms due to old silicone sealant grout needing to be stripped and replaced. I looked at the problem and decided that it was a bit above my skill level to do a good job of thoroughly stripping away the old grout in order replace it with new grout. Got in touch with Dave with some pictures of the stall and he quickly got back to me with an estimate. He and his worker were at the house the next morning and did a great job in replacing the old grout with nice, new grout, and also pointed out some unnoticed issues with the previous water leakage. Our front door Smart Lock deadbolt wasn't sliding into place properly, and Dave was able to assess the issue and fix it in a matter of minutes. Adjusted the level of the door, fixed the crashplate position, and now our lock works as good as new.
