I adore chicken sandwiches and love spicy food so someday I want to get to Nashville to try the chicken sandwich that it is so famous for. Until then, I have to rely on local options. This place popped up on my radar so one day I came with the family. It is a very minimalistic sort of restaurant with not much ambiance or pretense, but since the food was paramount to my visit I focused on that. Their menu was a little confusing: for chicken they essentially have tenders and sandwiches (sliders), but of their four combo meals each seemed to allow you to add more of the other, or cheese, or whatnot. Kaleslaw (coleslaw) and fries are standard, as are lots of dill pickle slices. I ordered a chicken slider at the second-highest spice level ("Extra Hot") with the kaleslaw on the side. It came with fries and a side of "Dave's sauce" (a mayo + sweet ketchup like mixture). My wife had the second-least spicy level ("Extra Mild"... a/k/a lame) sandwich, and my son got a plain ("No Spice") tender. Food was up relatively quickly. My sandwich glistened with grease and hot sauce and the chicken was much larger than the bun. Perhaps that is why they call it a slider and not a full sandwich. I bit in expecting the heat and I got it... but only because it was fresh out of the oil. Once I allowed it to cool for a minute the heat was gone. I may have a pretty good tolerance for heat but this seemed pretty wimpy. Tasty... yes, in a Cajon blackened chicken sort of way. But my mouth wasn't burning or anything. My wife's extra mild sandwich was mild to the extreme and if someone told me it was blackened fish I would have believed them. It tasted fine, but not spicy at all. My son's tender was very dark with a craggy coating that appeared different from our spicy chicken sandwiches and was decent, though I found myself dipping it in Dave's sauce for more flavor. He liked it plain. The sides of fries were coated crinkle fries with a seasoning spice mixture applied, and they were great. The Kaleslaw was a lot better than I expected and I wish I had ordered it on my sandwich after all. Note for next time. It didn't seem to have much onion or flavor outside of the kale/cabbage, but that worked for me. My wife loved the copious amounts of pickles that came with our three orders. They don't advertise it as Nashville hot chicken so it isn't fair for me to compare it to that. For $40 it wasn't cheap but the sandwiches were good. That being said, the college-chic atmosphere didn't do it for me. If I come back, and I likely will, I will need to order the chicken at the hottest setting (Reaper) and see how it goes. read more

Dave's Hot Chicken has been on our radar for a while now so when we drove by this location in Albany we just had to stop in. Hubby ordered the Dave's #1 Hot Tender Basket and I ordered the Dave's #3 Mild Tender & Mild Slider Basket. Our food came out in about 5 minutes. Everything was delicious! The slider was huge, more like a small sandwich. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, even for mild. It also had a really nice crunch. I enjoyed the thick cut pickles, kale slaw and Dave's sauce. The toasted potato bun was an excellent choice. The tenders were fairly big as well. Hubby got 3 tenders in his basket. The hot was spicy and packed with that classic Nashville flavor. I tried here for the 1st time while in Albany. It's definitely a cute fun space. I had one of there ice cream mixed with slush drinks was a combination of sweet and sour but tasted really good. My husband decided to eat hear on a Sat afternoon after an event nearby. I'd been talking about it since it opened because he loves spicy chicken sandwiches. They're using good deli pickles which I love. I ate my husband's and my kids. I ordered a slider and tender combo lite mild so I could share with my kid. The slider came with daves sauce, kale slaw on a nice soft bun. I kind of wish it was a toasted bun. It also came with 5 pickle slices, Dave's sauce on the side and good crinkle fries with some powder seasoning. The tender came on top of a slice of bread. As someone from western NY I was missing a little pat of butter for the bread. Anyways, everything was good but not spicy at all. All things considered, this was definitely a 5 star sandwich for me. The place was surprisingly busy at 3pm on a Saturday, especially for Albany. I did like that the decor had some Albany-themed decor too. My friend and I were brought here because of their app download promotion. Within a certain timeframe, if you downloaded it they would give you a free slider when you order ahead. I thought the slider would be pretty small because of the name, but I'm happy with how much it filled me. You get to choose from 5 of 6 different spice levels which I appreciate! My friend got it hot while I chose mild. I could've gone up a little bit, but I accidentally bit the spicy first and thought they were trying to kill me. Luckily my mild was sort of perfect, I could've done a bit spicier. If you're not sure what to pick between two options, choose the spicier one because you can grab honey packets that both make the slider yummy and cools the spice. I'm giving 5 stars because this is a fast food chain restaurant that had a solid product. Also, I liked that you can see the differences in chicken size and shape between two sandwiches. So, I am a big fan of extra spicy food. And this place did not disappoint. I was in Austin for the past month and searched for some hot Nashville Chicken. This place popped up, but the closest location was San Antonio. Not driving an hour for that, especially since I saw some Yelp reviews from my Yelp peeps in Albany. I agreed and followed, but then my stomach growled at me in the car and I remembered... Dave's Hot Chicken. It was on my way home on Western Avenue, so I headed there. For those of you who don't know, it is one of the hottest new franchises spreading across the country, and I am so glad Smallbany got one. Location is great, lots of parking, and love the fresh new vibe inside. They greeted me at the register with a pleasant smile and asked if it was my first time here, which was a big star for me. It's places like this that not only focus on great food but great "SERVICE!" The service was fantastic, and the workers were so professional and pleasant. To explain, the chicken was juicy and crunchy with just the right amount of spice. Next, I tried the crinkle cut fries which were solid. To elaborate, the fries were crispy and seasoned. On the other hand, the macaroni and cheese was awful. It was incredibly bland and the noodles were generic. On the flip side, the chicken sandwich was excellent and it is the best item here. I saw a TikTok about this place, and when I searched it didn't realize we have a location nearby! I made an order on the app and it was ready within about 10 minutes. Either things are made in big batches, with long waits in-between, or something was backed up in the kitchen. A smooth delivery of food is always better if possible. - Make the fries more appealing, or make them optional. Crinckle cut packaged fries are so-so, especially when I can to go other places, even some chains, that are either serving hand-cut fries, or seasoned fries. Unless, of course, the fries are a "price raising item" to help manage the cost of the chicken. - Be a bit more factual about the milkshakes. They say made with real ice cream, but I'd be willing to bet it's soft-serve ice cream, because as it melted, my shake did not have the expected taste or consistency of a milkshake made with milk and hard ice cream. Next time I visit a Dave's I'll definitely get either soda or water, as these milkshakes, for me, were not as good as ones I've gotten at other burger/chicken chains. - Either turn down the volume of the music playing, or install a microphone. As customers' orders came out, the employees had to call out numbers multiple times, competing with the music, before the customers realized their food was ready. Of course, handing out buzzers or being able to send messages to a cell phone number would be even better, but the investment is probably not justified. - While I appreciate the effort to keep the restaurant clean, having someone come to my table while I'm waiting for my food and ask me to take my items off of it (including my drink) while I'm sitting there is unnerving. If it's important to keep the tables clean, be sure to staff someone to do it immediately after tables are vacated. read more

It's definitely hot! I was pretty happy with the food from this new spot. The chicken was flavorful, surprisingly moist and tender, and yes, hot. I got the medium and it was just tolerable but I usually get mild when it comes to things with this type of spice so I wasn't too surprised. Although I'm not sure what the Reaper is like!! The sliders were nicely done with cheese, pickles, and sauce, but the chicken was seasoned a bit too much (shocking that's even possible) -- seems as if the chicken is loaded with Old Bay/chili powder. They finally opened a Daves location in Albany. They're originally from California and have been expanding their restaurants in the east. Knowing that they finally opened a restaurant here, I had to go try it out! The location very close to University at Albany, plenty of parking near the area too. The store itself is also fairly big. It is very crowded as of todays date because the store just opened and everyone wants to try it out! I had to wait around 30 min for my order and food. The service was great! They had people giving out free stickers. There was a person helping everyone with the menu before they got to the register. I recommend getting Dave's number 3 because it comes with sliders, tenders and the fries. You get to try everything if its your first time! Make sure to get some honey on the side when you get your sauces, it tastes really good with their signature sauce! I got my chicken hot and it was really well seasoned and crispy. There was a lot of seasoning on the chicken, but it seems the seasoning is just on the milder side, so if you're looking for spice, get the hot level or even higher. I was also a bit disappointed that aside from not being spicy, the seasoning was also on the sweet side? If not spicy, I was hoping for some salty/savory fried chicken but it had a more sweet profile instead. This was my first time trying Dave's Hot Chicken. And I can't say I had a bad experience. I ordered the 2 Sliders with Fries. The fries were not amazing. They were definitely something I could eat, but I did find them a bit flavorless. The "Dave's Sauce" that came on the side helped that quite a bit. That sauce was incredible. It's obvious that they are making a copy of the "Cane's Sauce" from that fast food chain, but that was a good thing. They both had a good size piece of chicken which were obviously the same thing they use as their Chicken Tenders. I ordered one of the sliders with the Mild flavor and one with the Medium. I only noticed a very very small amount of more heat coming from the medium slider. I will in the future for sure try out the hot flavor. The chicken was pretty tender and worked with the Cole slaw and soft bun it came with really well. Now... the prices are kind of insane. For that meal it was $18. For the amount of food you get I feel like it should've came with almost double the amount of fries and another slider. I would say it came with 10 French fries overall. Checked out Dave's hot chicken and found the meal to be quite tasty. For fast food this is one of the better pieces of chicken that I've had. It is white meat but juicy, it tastes like it's been brined and the breading has lots of flavor both savory and a tiny bit sweet, nice combo. You can choose different heat levels from nonexistent to fiery and everything in between. I always wanted to try this place out. I drive by it all the time. It's usually pretty busy, so I thought today. I would give it a shot, I stopped in for lunch. the inside was clean with nicely decorated walls, which gave me a graffiti vibe. surprisingly, I was first in line when I walked in I stood there for a couple of minutes while the young man behind the register had his head down and was on his cell phone a co-worker said to him we have a customer he looked up at me I smiled and said hello I got no smile back or an apology for making me wait. In fact, he seemed very annoyed I was there he then said, "What would you like?" kind of rudely You can tell he didn't want to be there there was also a young lady with him behind the counter she was OK but you can tell she didn't want to be there either by the way she responded when I spoke to her about my missing soda I ordered. This bad excuse for customer service already turned me off to this establishment and I would not come back just because of how I was treated but since I was already there I just ordered for the first and last time. I got a daves #3 one tender and one slider with cheese and fries. The fries were the best thing in the meal, very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and very well seasoned. The tender was OK it came out hot but was a little dry. I wasn't much for the seasoning, though it had an off-putting sweetness to it that I didn't like. The slider was not that good, but also, a little dry inside, the kale slaw was watery and bland, and the daves sauce on it was just OK, nothing special. This combo meal came out to $19.59, which is very expensive for lackluster customer service and not very good food. This is a one-time try for me. I will not be coming back read more
