Trying this for first time. Supposed to be best Halal in town. I have to say it is. The food was excellent. Tasty, but most of all fresh. I ordered the mixed grilled kabob combo. The lamb was succulent, chicken perfect, and kafka great. The rice is the long grain pasta like rice. Salad fresh. Also got the chicken kafka wrap. It was excellent with three pieces. Inside the establishment is a tiny but very clean place. You can tell they pride the cleanliness and make it truly Halal. About the only downside is the area. I never saw more degenerates in one place in my life. Since the grilled kabob was fresh, had to wait 20 minutes, which made for entertainment seeing all the locals on drugs, selling drugs, and with their pants half way down. God bless Albany. It's pretty rare for me to order takeout, but this was what I was craving! It's slightly off of Central and has a parking lot, which is greatly appreciated during the dinner rush hour on Central. I got the combo Chicken and Lamb over rice. The food was fresh and the food flavorful. I preferred the lamb over the chicken, the chicken was good but was just not as well seasoned as the lamb. Food is decent. The afghan salad is the best in the city. The rice is also some of the best of any halal in the area. I would give 5 stars, but sometimes the fish tastes a little dried out and sometimes it's fresher. Their hot sauce is also some of the best at any halal spot around. My daughters love both the lamb over rice and the chicken. The portions are large and the meal comes with a soda. Definitely worth the price. This place is open late and these guys are whipping out some great food. It is located in a rather run down part of town. If that scares you, don't go at night. I went minutes before close and it was fine. I called ahead and picked it up. Masks are required but I didnt have mine and it was okay. The mixed grill was delicious! For the price, I would order this all the time if I lived in the area. There is mo real dining area right now. Not sure if there ever was, but food comes out fast and hot. After trying halal guys in New York City we were trying to find something comparable in Albany and try a few different restaurants. I'm happy to report that I actually liked this establishment more than the halal guys cart in New York City. The food here tasted fresher and less processed, and was not greasy in the slightest. The hot sauce wasn't quite as hot as the one in the city, but simply adding more of it to the white sauce still produced the desired effect. Excellent customer service, off street parking in a small lot, reasonable prices, and large portion sizes all indicate that this is getting bookmarked and will be our go to place for takeout going forward. Had high hopes and the food was fine, but the rest of it...sketchy. First...it's in an unsafe, and I mean, really unsafe neighborhood despite the fact that it's just off Central Ave. There's no parking lot, street parking only, and there are scary dudes all over the place. Garbage everywhere on the street, homes in major disrepair; you know what I'm talking about. We go inside to find a young couple swearing at each other, arguing, fighting...they aren't customers!!!! They haven't bought anything at all. They are standing and being verbally abusive to each other. They are literally calling each other racial epithets and swearing back and forth, all in front of the counter girl and us, who said nothing. We placed a to go order right away and waited a good 15 minutes for it to be ready. This couple stayed inside fighting the entire time!!! I refused to look at them because I didn't want to get involved at all, and honestly, I thought they might commit a crime against me and/or my wife if I even looked at them. I just couldn't believe that the counter girl didn't ask them to leave or call the police. The couple wasn't shouting, but they were back and forth to one another certainly loud enough for anyone inside to hear and be made to feel very uncomfortable. I would definitely suggest you do not come here at night and in fact, just do a call in order if you want to risk it at all. No way I would eat in here; way too many undesirables around. Ample portions, naan bread was grilled perfectly and the lamb gyro meat on both our combo gyro and combo rice meal was flavorful and moist. I also enjoyed the yellow rice quite a bit. All meals come with a can soda (Pepsi and Crush products) or a bottled water. Combo rice meal was 10 bucks and the combo meat gyro (chicken and lamb) was 9 dollars. I would order food here over the phone, keep my car running and locked (bring that spare set of keys) and run in and grab my food and haul rear...but that's it...don't spend any real time in this place. Wear your bulletproof vest if you're planning on eating in. Dang, I haven't felt that scared waiting to eat a meal in a very, very long time. read more

Simply the best lamb gyro I have ever eaten. Instead of a typical pita bread, the owner Khalil serves the gyro on a na'an, which wikipedia tells me is "a leavened, oven-baked flatbread". The na'an was softer and lighter than a pancake and melted on my tongue. If that wasn't great enough, the lamb was the most tender and well-seasoned lamb I have ever had; it was flavorful and juicy with just the right amount of crispness on the edges. This was combined with a mild, yogurty dressing, chopped green peppers, onions, and (I think) tomatoes and cucumbers. There are a handful of tables and chairs in this small, no-frills take-out style joint. It is not in a great neighborhood and may be out of the way to visit. But it is very clean, the staff and owners are friendly, and for about $10, you can enjoy an incredible gyro, french fries, and a can of soda. There were several desserts available and other menu items that I did not try as this was my first visit. read more

Decided to treat myself for my birthday and not cook. I know what I wanted but based on the online price and the in-person price, I settled for Halal Grill on Ontario Street. Well, I should have cooked. Purchased was the Steak over Rice and Wings over rice. My Partner and I shared the meals. The Steak was more like a "Steak-Umm" product. It was some type of thinly sliced facsimile of meat , all chopped in tiny bits and pieces over the "rice", which was vermicelli, with a water logged taste (the meat). Don't get me started on the chicken wings. They definitely were cooked last week with a taste of rancid oil. Or the type of oil that has the flavor or scent from everything had been fried in it. The best thing about both meals was the salad and the bread. Perhaps the only two items that can't be messed up under any circumstances. My next birthday.........perhaps by then, I would have saved enough to challenge the online price with an in person purchase. There are no two ways about it... this place rocks. Before you even walk in, you'll pick up on the exotic scent of a Middle-Eastern kitchen. Upon entry, you'll be greeted by friendly owner/operators who readily share their pride and satisfaction relating to the freshness and quality of their ingredients. Did I mention that it smelled good inside, too? The food appeared to be prepared fresh per order. The "meat-to-rice" ratio is not insignificant - especially in consideration of the fresh ingredients used. The chicken and lamb were perfectly seasoned and sat atop a subtly seasoned bed of rice. The white sauce was slightly tangy while cool and refreshing. Anyway, if not most importantly in the minds of many, the prices are unbelievably low. Some of my dishes were as low as $9.99 - and the portions featured in these dishes were not much less than the more expensive choices. The total bill was easy on the wallet, and I was not for want of quality or quantity. The only possible complaints that anyone could proffer would have something to do with the neighborhood. It is located in a working class area within the City of Albany. With this said, it's a business with dedicated, off-street parking that does its best to maintain a clean, attractive appearance.
