***Update*** I really want to downgrade my original review based on my follow up experience, but I'll let you know what happened. As mentioned that pepperoni was life changing, so I made the traffic filled journey back in the rain to get a larger portion. They were sold out and the kid working the counter said it would be 3 days before they had stock again. This is nuts, place I frequent, don't sell out of snacks, so what's going on here? I did get more jerky, but it didn't taste the same. My original piece were savory. This jerky was much sweeter and I don't like sweet meat. Clearly consistency is an issue here. Also, the service was bad. On my original trip the guy told me the price, which I gave the cashier. This time, the guy handed me the bag, when I asked for the price, he said it would be weighed up front. Up front, the guy asked me the price and I told him the kids said he'd weight it. The guy walked off, talked to the kid and came back with a price. Really...? Looks like the weekend help is either lazy or incompetent. Had this been my 1st trip, the review would be one star for sure. read more

I give this a 5 star rating because they deserve one. The meat is perfect if you need something cut the butcher is a professional and does a perfect job. The flat iron steaks are my favorite and they run out fast in the summer! I also love the Island style pork roast so much i get one once a month it is a staple. I've seen this place on Instagram on a food truck that I follow. I read some of the other reviews on here and honestly some of the people that leave reviews are soft as marshmallows. Seriously giving two stars over nothing to do with the food, service, or environment/ambiance. I was in a pinch for a 4th of July BBQ that I was invited to at the last minute. I had to bring some good meat. The burgers and hot dogs doesn't do it for me. I picked up the marinated Kalbi short ribs, a couple of meat sticks, and Brauts. For added indulgence, I picked up a couple of six packs that carried local beer from Georgetown Brewery. The meat was amazing! I arrived late and food was already prepared. I purchased 5lbs of Kalbi and it was gone in 30 minutes! People were already full when I arrived and let's say they made room for this amazing piece of meat! The Brauts were juicy, and the jalapeño cheddar meat stick I had as a snack on the way there will have me returning soon. Did I say soon? I meant today after work! read more

They are so accodating here. I came in just for some doggie bones. They have them in the freezer for sale. But I have two Yorkies and asked if they had any smaller in width. Came in for a nice prime rib and they did not disappoint! Drew was very helpful as I never bought a prime rib before. I do not shop anywhere else for my meat since I started coming here. First off, customer service is top tier, they are always so friendly! Then they have such great quality meats! I was looking for somewhere to go that has grass fed, and organice meat and that's all they have! They have premarinated and regular meat, some produce options when you walk in the front too. Prices are extremely comparable to grocery store prices, so do your body a favor and stop shopping at the grocery store for meat and go to Dave's! read more

She would go in and place an order for different steaks cut in different styles and different thicknesses as well as meats ground to certain Specifications. My rating is a four for two reasons. The meats and sausages are fantastic, albeit a bit pricey (most are worth it). The counter help possesses an astounding knowledge of the products. The marking down (barely) is for one product purchased that was iffy (chicken hindquarters); they did not appear fresh. Otherwise it is a great place to go for local and specialty meats. Excellent guacamole made in house by Martein (spelling?)...my favorite butcher. There is no Dave...maybe there used to be yet Derek has owned it for years. I go for the pepper bacon and the guacamole. Prices are not the cheapest yet the meat is from local farms and fresh. Produce can be iffy yet that's the nature of a small corner store. They attempt to stock fresh produce and if it doesn't get bought right away, then it looks a bit sad. I'll still buy it, no complaints. I work hard to support local and Dave's is no exception. Great store, friendly staff and good food! I highly recommend folks go here with an open mind and find the "good" in their neighborhood grocery store! I was driving home from a bowling tournament in Tacoma with my best friend Travis in the car and we decided to stop at Dave's to check it out. Travis use to be a butcher in Nebraska so he knows his meat and knows the proper cuts as he was trained in France. After parking the car and walking inside we were greeted by a young man behind the counter. I was immediately drawn to the pepperoni sticks. They looked delicious and I think the young man knew with the way I was gazing at them that I needed to try one. AMAZING!! While I chewed in delight, Travis and the young butcher sorted out our dinner for the night, pork wrapped in banana leaf (cooking instructions included). We also had to grab some of the Hawaiian marinated chicken thighs. Boy was that young butcher helpful, he even carried the meat to the counter since I had injured my hand in the bowling tournament. Just before leaving I talked Travis into grabbing a 6 pack of beer. They have a decent selection for a butcher shop and after all any time I cook something that has to sit in the oven for hours, I have to drink at least a 6 pack. I popped that banana leaf roast in the oven for 4 hours just as the butcher told me to. I pulled it out at exactly 645 pm and by 7 it was like there was a party in my mouth and everyone was invited! No seriously, that pork was to die for, succulent, juicy, amazingness! Even Travis was impressed, and that's saying something because he usually complains all the time. The next night I decided, what the heck?? How about I throw the chicken thighs onto the grill. I figured Travis would want to try them as well so I got ahold of him on the Xbox (metal of honor) and invited him on over. I threw those thighs on the grill till they were perfectly done and brought them in the house on a bamboo cutting board. Within 5 minutes, my mouth was back at that party! AMAZING meat here!!! Since this two night gorging of meat, I find myself at Dave's almost once a week. I won't buy my meat anywhere else. read more

Decent butcher shop, price is comparable to Safeway, but the quality is a little better. They don't offer anything exotic, like my old butcher shop in Oakland, CA(alligator, duck, rabbit, etc). Staff is friendly & helpful, willing to cut meat for free if they don't have the cut you're looking for. 1 star deducted for not carrying full chickens, as I think that's a pretty basic item. I would recommend Dave's to anyone near the Point Defiance area, however I haven't been to the other butcher shop that's slightly farther away from me... yet. read more

I love the food here and the staff are friendly and helpful. However the last 2 times I went in, people were wearing either just face shields, or even worse, one of those chin shield jokes. Since it is now accepted that covid is spread, at least partially by aerosolized breath, these do not protect anyone from COVID. (imagine breathing out a lungful of smoke. I love this place. Great selection of meats ranging from steaks, chicken, pork and fish. Their Hawaiian pork loin wrapped in green leaves is fantastic along with their candied salmon jerky and then of course one of my favorites is the guacamole dip, which sells out fast. They also have a nice selection of vegetables and fruits, along with a decent selection of beers and a rather nice selection of wines. If you want something particular for an upcoming party or a certain cut of meat, stop in ahead of time and they will help you out. What a great place!! read more

Store was sparse of variety in the produce section and overpriced (mind you, I live within walking distance of the Proctor Farmer's Market and happily spend money there). Bought a head of garlic for $1.00 that ended up being ENTIRELY MOLDED over. See picture. Bought 1 red pepper for $1.99/lb. That was all that was worth buying for at its listed price point. Dave's Meat and Produce is an excellent place to visit if you like fresh, quality ingredients. The staff are usually pretty helpful. The meat they carry is hormone-free. The produce always looks amazing. The spices-in-bulk are always aromatic. There is a parking lot behind the building. It's North Tacoma, so street parking is an option but not always available. I've never tried the attached coffee stand. My only real complaint here is that the hours aren't that great. Tacoma Boys carries a very similar range of meats (and more produce) but is open 24 hours. If you live in the neighborhood, give them a visit! read more

Today, my wife and I decided to check out Dave's Meat & Produce. We've been looking for a [local] butcher of grassfed beef. We walked in shortly after 10AM. Was promptly greeted by Derrick. He asked what we were looking for. Even made a joke about how I was staring at the steaks. He gave his opinions regarding his preferences of different cuts of beef. The ribeye is the best of the steaks...as compared to the New York strip and tenderloin. I happen to agree. We made some conversation about where we were from. Very pleasant guy. Seems to know his bbq meats very well. I really like the way he communicates with customers. Before we went to pay for our steaks. He said, "I have to let you try the flat iron steak" or something to that effect. He then wrapped a steak for us. Placed "N/C" on the paper. My wife and I were shocked... Who does that anymore? I would never go here again. I bought a Groupon for 18 dollars for 30 dollars worth of meat. We looked around and found the prices were ridiculous. I was looking for chicken breasts and for 6.98 per pound I got only 5 breasts costing us 28 dollars. My fiancé was picking out produce and most everything was wilted and old. Plus, the old lady behind the counter checking us out was not welcoming at all. She was clearly upset the coupon wasn't opening when she was redeeming it and I think she was upset we came in using a Groupon. I give it 1 star because the girl at meat counter was nice and had a great attitude. Go to Tacoma Boys! At least people working there are happy and welcoming. read more

I live within four blocks of Dave's and end up here quite often. In the summer time on walks, bike rides or evening promenades I will stop in for dinner items or a beverage. This is my go to spot for last minute ingredients or quick fixings. Dave's has great things going. It's quaint, it's high quality and it's close to my house. Sometimes the fruits and veggies offered are nonexistent, but I believe that is due in fact that some of the produce is locally sourced. The meats are awesome included but not limited the steaks, fajita fixings and kebobs. The older gal who works is great and extremely friendly to me and my son. However, there has been times when I did not receive good service and I had to ask several times to get help. I also miss the bulk spice section. Creole Pierre is a great man who arrives in the summer months. His wife and him provide Tacoma with great smoked meats and favorite side dishes. The spring and summer months are decorated by an outdoor grill and dining area for Taco Tuesdays and grilling on the weekend. This place has high quality produce and meat and is a convenient spot for a juice or ice cream bar if you are in the area. read more
