Set in the open Nevers Road Park, this market offers a variety local goods and a fun morning. When my friends and I walked over from nearby parking areas (which were plentiful and easy to get to), the smells of freshly cooked donuts from Faddy's Donut Shop and the sounds of a Grateful Dead tribute band met us. After grabbing some donuts, instead of sitting in the nice rest area set up near the band, we began down the line of stands. We found a little of everything we wanted and more!! We grabbed a couple slices of pie from Granny's Pie Factory, a brown butter dark chocolate chip cookie from LaBrioche Bakery, a couple of jars of homemade artisan teas from Whole Harmony, and a bouquet of freshly picked flowers from the Syme Family Farm. Shopping here can get a bit pricey, for example, a South Windsor Farmers Market tote bag was $5; however, you're supporting local businesses, many of which don't have storefronts. It's well worth chipping in a few extra bucks with the quality of the goods and the personal attention you receive at the stands. I would rather save my money and spend it here than at big chain stores that don't need it. Every vendor we went to, especially the individuals at the Syme Family Farm and the Whole Harmony stands, were extremely kind and helpful. The vendor of Whole Harmony allowed us to try a couple of teas he had out as well as the lavender lemonade (all of which were extremely delicious); he also told me how to properly steep the teas and gave me a loyalty card that offers a free jar after ten purchases. The vendors at the Syme Family Farm stand told me how they handpicked each flower, and wrapped up my bouquet--which was thoughtfully put together with care--and put it in a plastic baggie with wet paper towels around the stems to keep the flowers hydrated after I asked if they would be all right since we were not going directly home. I was very impressed by these two vendors' professionalism and kindness. The South Windsor Farmers Market is definitely a farmers market you need to check out!! It's open every Saturday in the morning (which is an extremely convenient and great time) from the middle of June until the middle of October. The organization running also has a list of what vendors will be there each week on a document on the website. You'll really enjoy every minute of being at this market, and you will undoubtedly find spectacular goods!!

I also paid $6 for 6 Gala apples at one stand but when I bit into it later....one of the best apples I've ever eaten. There are also bakery vendors with whole wheat pizza crusts, homemade croissants, arrays of fresh flower arrangements, fresh berries, etc. Clean eating at its best. Some items are a little pricey but the quality is tangible.

Overall, I thought the stalls were decently priced and we bought a lot of items ranging from fresh beets, garlic, mixed greens, to fresh cheese, and mushrooms. Apart from food and produce they sell yarn that comes from the wool of local sheep. I saw a distillery stall where they were handing out samples - it had quite the line. A stall that sold dry teas and infused syrups (I bought one actually) Maple syrup, soaps, I could go on. There's a booth for those who use Hip and apparently from $10 you get $30 to spend so it's a place where even those on a low budget can come and take advantage. Then there's the food which, you should definitely try. It was our first time trying food from Afghanistan and it was incredible. They were like these dumplings filled with either meat or squash, we chose the squash, and then it had lentils on top and a rich yogurt sauce that was absolutely phenomenal. I mean, honestly, it was a great experience, and the place itself is so beautiful, it's no wonder that there's lines of cars parked and others waiting to find parking. That's the only drawback, finding parking is gonna be rough, but when you do, ohhh the goodies that await you! I honestly wish I lived here, I'd be at this farmers market every Saturday.

Very nice indeed…read more Located on a long side street in the Central Business District of funky Northampton the Market specializes in the expected fruits and vegetables, but also had quite a selection of plants and flowers. The colors of the fresh vegetables was terrific- a photographers dream of orange and yellow tomatoes, purple eggplants, bright red and deep green peppers, plus the distinctive coloring of beets and carrots and sunflowers. I've seen some bigger markets, but really - if you're looking for fresh produce this should be more than enough for you to peruse. We picked up some zucchinis and a pint of "Chicken of the Woods" (not sure if its a wild mushroom or edible plant) from the Wild Edibles stand. So this Farmers market is between OK and Good so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. I think if there were more vendors out here it would be great. Despite the fact that it's kinda small for a farmers market, I was surprised at the variety I saw. Macaroons, ice cream, coffee, produce, flowers, hungry ghost bread, candles, soaps, meats, eggs, hungry ghost bread, polish pastries, handmade jewelry, live music, hand spun wool yarn, did I mention hungry ghost bread? I repeated HGB because they had a line that wouldn't quit. They had 5 different kinds of breads available, plus a couple of cookies for sale. Their bread is the best, there honestly is nothing like it so try it out if they haven't sold out by the time you get there. They had a wheel you could spin for a chance to get discounted or free things and we won a $2 off coupon at the polish pastry tent. We got this savory donut thing (I totally forgot what it's called) filled with squash, potato, cabbage and cheese wow. It was really really good. Picked up some produce where they had a lot of heirloom varieties you definitely wouldn't find in a mass produced supermarket. I ended up getting some watermelon radishes, rainbow carrots, and these funky potatoes that are Ruby red when you cut them. They had some nice live music going as well. Would definitely come back to pick up some goodies.

The ones I particularly patronize are Red Fire Farm (this being, from both its size and the number of its patrons, the market's star) and Hungry Ghost Bread. They often do have live music, and while it's crowded, well ... I'm a veteran of the Haymarket Friday/Saturday pushcarts in Boston, so "crowded" is a matter of perspective. Yes, the prices are as high as one can expect for fresh farm produce and boutique operations, but it isn't as if one can't go to Big Y or Stop & Shop to find poorer quality at a cheaper price. As it happens, they do take SNAP, and while most people on SNAP can't afford to blow their wad on a $6 pint of grape tomatoes or a $7 loaf of bread, the market will double up to $10 a week, which makes these things quite affordable. Last week I left with a pint of tomatoes, a loaf of bread, and a bunch of very tart chives. Finestkind!

This is my new favorite orchard in the valley…read more It's in a beautiful location on rolling hills, surrounded by quiet roads and beautiful trees. There were lots of butterflies and a few interesting birds of prey while I was last there. The orchard has rare varieties, including new and coveted strains - like Sweetango. They also have begun planting trees the european way, I believe it's 2000 trees/acre. The trees are smaller, denser and produce an amazing yield in less than half the time ... in all, very neat to compare to the old-type orchard trees (also on site). Great cider too, and helpful staff that are happy to provide more information about the Orchard.
