Hate to write a bad review but they did a pretty unbelievable thing when repairing my amp. I gave them my vintage 1969 deluxe reverb to work on. On the back of the amp, there's a cool smiley face sticker that's clearly been there since the 70s. It's the coolest little sticker I've had on there since I bought the amp. I mean, a real vintage smiley face sticker from when that brand was first invented. They took their Dave's Sound Repair sticker and put it directly on top of my sticker. It just says "Dave Sound Repair. Amp Serviced on 9/24." I mean he put it directly on top of my sticker. I tried to take it off and it ripped my smiley face sticker clean off. Who gave you permission to put ANY sticker on my amp? Let alone on top of MY sticker. I mean what even is that? When in your thought process did you think "you know what I should do? Cover up this guys sticker with my sticker, he won't care." I mean the entitlement is insane. Never giving you guys an amp to work on again. read more

I took in a Reeves 100 that was blowing fuses, a DeArmond 1802 weeper wah with a nonworking pot and a homebrew amp (built in a lunchbox) that I'd gotten from Reverb on a whim that had a pot that eventually failed. Dave had all those in top repair within a couple of weeks at a great price. No fuss, no oversell. Dave and Bill LISTEN to you, they don't automatically try to upsell you, as others have noted. That's a blessing; if you've ever been stung by repair folks who passed along an eye-popping bill for more work than was requested, Dave and Bill are your solution. What can I say that already has been said in previous reviews. Dave fixed my 'project' and 'intermitted' 1972 Ampeg SVT (Tube amp). The amp issues were for an expert to fix and that is Dave. Dave was willy, explained Technical issues in plain english, and took time with me. I am much better for the experience and grateful. Dave makes the amp like his own and strives for perfection. I just picked up a favorite electric guitar from Dave's Sound Repair to see why one of my pickups quit working. I need to keep the guitar all original since it is a Fender Custom Shop model with hand wound, signed pickups. Bill has taken care of my guitars forever and was able to find the problem and fix the existing pickup rather than replacing it. Also picked up a second guitar I had there for a setup - it had never played right before. Both came back playing and sounding better than they ever had sounded before. Once again Daves Sound Repair, and Bill Baker (guitar tech) are friendly and came through with fast, expert work, once and done. Simply an honest, trustworthy business I will continue to rely on. Dave is a class and classic act. Once you walk into the shop, you'll know you've brought your amp to the right guy. He recently took on my very troubled (first real issues in 16 years, though) 2008 Fender Emerald Green SE Hot Rod Deluxe--volume and tone fluctuations, noise, etc. After some trial and error, a few suggested mods, and a second trip back to the shop, Dave had it sussed. His explanations and suggestions were thorough and clear. His price was fair, and when he didn't get rid of all the issues on the first go around, he only charged me for an inexpensive part the second time. And he's a genuinely friendly guy to boot. The idea of Dave's is great. "Mom and Pop" type of shop. Not an overpriced chain like Guitar Center. Skilled tecnicians. Dave does the amps and Bill does guitars. Dave is pretty solid. He knows amps for sure. Bill does a decent job. I wouldn't say he goes above and beyond, though. I'm not sure if Bill is a part owner. If he isn't, he should be. I think he'd be more incentivized to go the extra mile. When you bring your guitar into Dave's, you want Bill to work on it like it's his own and not stop until it's perfect or until he's done everything you've asked him to do. Unfortunately because of how busy Bill is, he just wants to get through all of the guitars he's got in the shop. So, "turning around" the guitars seems to be his priority, rather than going the extra mile. He gets a paycheck either way, it seems. While Bill's a sweet enough guy, he's a little difficult to deal with. He's not nasty or hostile, but I personally prefer to work with a guy who tries always to find a way to do what you've asked him to do. Instead, too often he gives you all the ressons of why what the easiest or quickest approach for him is the best thing for you. That sort of personality just bugs me in business. Again, he just doesn't seem incentivized to go the extra mile. read more

Dave's Sound Repair is a hidden gem! If you're serious about music, serious about your gear, Dave's the man to go to! Doesn't BS you, doesn't nickel and dime you. The man will tell you how it is, and will give great quality work! Call him up, tell him what you need and let him do his thing. That's pretty much how it's been with me. I recently brought my acoustic guitar here for what I consider a major repair and was blown away by the quality of the work and service by tech Bill! I will definitely be bringing all my guitars here for any work that is needed! I was immediately impressed because this is the only repair shop I could find around the NYC/NJ area that was able to put stainless steel frets on a guitar. When I called the shop Bill was friendly, professional, down to earth, and basically a cool dude who would talk nerd-details and specs about the project. I ended up calling over a period of months while I researched and finally pulled the trigger on the repair (a big job and fairly expensive). Bill kept me abreast on the progress and when I finally picked up my guitar I was floored. Not only did he hit a homerun with the work, but it was like having a new guitar! The fretwork was impeccable and the setup was true and smooth. I highly recommend Dave's for any guitar (or other related) repairs, even if you life in the city, I would still recommend Dave's over any other place. Needed to find someone who could fix my Krank Krankenstein amp. The company that manufactured it is no longer in existence and finding parts or information on it is almost impossible. Dave was able to figure it out and get it sounding like it used too. He really knows his electronics and amps, finding someone like Dave that's still around doing this is impossible. I've been bringing my equipment to Dave's for years. They've worked on my amps and guitars. Notably, I have a '69 Telecaster that I bought used many years ago. It had a number of issues. Three other repair shops couldn't fix it. I had all but abandoned it. So I brought it to Dave's. Bill Baker got it right. It's been my favorite guitar ever since. I also have a Strat but was not real happy with it. Bill asked me a lot of questions about the type of tone I was looking for and recommended pickup replacements and a set up. I'm playing it through a 1966 Deluxe Reverb that I bought from Dave's four years ago. The tone is amazing and the action is super smooth. When Dave & Bill say it works - it works. There isn't anyone else who I would EVER let near my equipment. I was looking at the other Yelp reviews. I feel the same way. Can't recommend these guys enough. read more

I have been bringing my gear to Dave and Bill for over 25 years. These guys are the at the top of their game. Their prices are more than fair given the high quality of their work. Dave has serviced multiple Marshalls, an old Ampeg Reverb Rocket II and even a Line 6 modeling amp. He always gets to the bottom of any issues and returns my amps in great working condition. Dave has never tried to sell me on repairs or upgrades that are not related to the reason I came in with the amp. Bill has been doing setup on my guitars along with upgrades and mods. He did an absolutely 1st rate job re fretting my all time favorite Les Paul when it was 30 years old and the frets were past prime. Dave's Sound Repair is the only place I will take my guitars and amps. I have been going to Dave and Bill since 2003 when I got my first vintage tube amp. Dave has done a masterful job retubing my 1970 Fender Dual Showman Reverb and even repaired a Roland Space Echo that I was having problems with (turns out there were little creatures living in it----eeek!). Bill has been setting up and taking care of all my guitars during the same time period and I am willing to drive my guitars the hour or so when I can to have him work on them. I have been using Bill Baker at Dave's Sound for years now, and I will not let anyone else touch any of my guitars or basses. He is super nice, patient, and mega skilled. He makes all of my guitars play and sound amazing. I mostly get string changes and set-ups, but he has also done some more involved work for me like fret leveling and polishing, pickup swaps and custom wiring, and he even swapped the neck and re-installed a poorly installed Floyd Rose tremolo (from a previous shop) that gave amazing new life to an old custom made guitar. Dave is the only person I will let work on my amps and electronic gear. He is super knowledgeable and a really nice guy too. Love these guys! read more

First off, I call Dave's this morning - a Saturday - at 10:20 to see if they're open. Turns out they weren't but Dave answers the phone anyway. I say "Are you open?" Dave says "Hi Evan, we open at noon." I see Dave perhaps once or twice a year yet he knows my voice and greets me personally. Always I nice touch. Then I bring in my amp at noon. A six way knob is slipping and needing replacement. I also bring the part (thanks Roy Blankenship for sending it to me). Dave turns the knob a bit, walks out, returns with a small screwdriver, and tightens the screw. All fixed. We chat for 15 minutes as I often do with him and leave, amp in hand. No charge. I do leave the replacement switch behind as a gift. :) Shout out to Bill Baker also, the guitar tech, who's a lovely guy as well who does nice work. Good reliable service by people who know their trade and charge a fair price. What more can one ask? read more

I've been coming to Dave's Sound for a few years since getting a recommendation from a friend. Bill and Dave exhibit qualities in their work that I look for in musicians I play with... thoughtfulness, intention, and passion. Every job I give them they do with a zest that reassures me that they genuinely enjoy and respect gear repair. Most recently I brought a bass to Bill to have the nut seated for BEAD tuning, something I've always wanted to do but never had the courage or trust in a tech. Bill went in there like a surgeon and got that B string seated perfectly, its just snappy enough, doesn't bottom out anywhere, and responds to tweaking (not one of those magic setups, that if you touch a thing disappears). Bill also did a couple other things to the bass while he had it that were thoughtful additional touches (polished the frets, fixed a strap pin, etc). I dropped it off weeks start, had it back midweek, and to rehearsals and gigs by weeks end, loving every minute. Couldn't be happier, not that I expected any different! Thanks guys! read more

First of all I'm a professional musician of 45 years, and guitars and amps are tools to me to make money so I can eat and put my daughter through college. If they don't play or sound excellent then the audience or studio suffers. With that said with my guitars I only trust two people Tina out in LA and Bill at Dave's sound repair. I'm a left handed player who plays a lot of flipped over righties and it takes a special Tech to intonate them properly, Bill has also done a lot of fret jobs for me on Tele's, Grestch's Strat's PRS's ect... All my guitars play like butter and I play them all day everyday...ugh. lol. Dave now is a different story, I first took a broken '66 vibroverb to Dave back in 1979 in Morristown and when he got done it sounded like it was NEW!!!!!
