If you don't have good insurance this guy wants nothing to do with you. He literally laughed in my face and said my collapsed and bulging cervical discs (that I've been conservatively dealing with for over 10 years) "wasn't bad enough for surgery" I have nerve damage, numbness, tingling, pain, can't do a lot of normal every day things ...I haven't been able to carry even a small hand bag for YEARS. After asking "how bad does my pain need to be in order to get help", he said it needed to be the worst pain of my life. Since when is pain level the deciding factor? What happened to his oath? He also did NOT examine me, just sat across his desk from me & glanced at my MRI ....guess what, my chart is full of examination notes he DIDNT Do! Well it has been over two years since Dr. Liauw performed neck surgery on me (c5/c6). I wrote a review last year about the mess I am in as a result of the surgery: There has been no change! Currently I apply hot compresses to my neck every morning to relieve the stiffness and aching. I did speak with him about a year ago; he said he would go back in and fix it if I wanted. I am going to write a factual account of my recent surgical experience with Jason Liauw, MD in December, 2021. I am a 58 year old male who is overweight but otherwise in good general health. I was scheduled for a 3-4 hour procedure with 2-4 nights total in the hospital. Dr Liauw performed a T10 to L3 spine fusion on me Friday morning December 17. That evening - while the anesthesia was still wearing off - I could immediately feel that there was something terribly wrong in my back: I could FEEL the metal pieces Dr Liauw had installed (the term is the "instrumentation") moving around inside my body! Dr Liauw was contacted and after examining me and looking at imaging told me, "I need to operate again and tighten things up". Two days later on Sunday morning December 19 Dr Liauw performed an entire second surgery on me to fix the things that were not right the first time. I was discharged from the hospital two days after that. Ok.. Five days after my discharge I called 911 and an ambulance took me to the emergency room -- I was in agony! After x-rays I was told that that the metal parts Dr Liauw had installed in my back were "disconnected". Five days later a DIFFERENT orthopedic surgeon operated on me for the THIRD time and, besides suctioning an entire litre of fluid (hematoma) from my abused body, determined that EVERY one of the "screws" Dr Liauw had installed in my back had become DISCONNECTED. Every one! This new surgeon cleaned up the mess and corrected the problems with the hardware installed by Liauw. I was back home on the 3rd day following the procedure and since then I've had an easy, unremarkable recovery. So - 13 nights total in hospital instead of 2-4 and THREE TIMES put under anesthesia and operated upon. Jason Liauw MD performed the same surgery on me TWICE in three days and still - based on the results - didn't get it right. A different surgeon did my procedure once and so far I'm doing great. I pray I don't have any life-long permanent damage other than the emotional trauma of 13 nights in the hospital - the pain, the worry, the sadness. I can't thank Dr. Liauw enough for his amazing work. I needed a surgery, and I was in great deal of pain, not only he was able to see me in a short notice, but he was able to schedule me for a surgery before my original appointment to see another doctor. I lived in Pasadena, and I had to do the drive to his office, but it was totally worth it, as his staff are amazing as well, understanding of my needs, and my schedule. I have know Doctor Jason Liauw for approximately one year. Dr. Liauw performed a spinal surgery on me that helped to maintain strength in my body after it was discovered that I had Multiple Myoloma. Just wanted to say that I've read a couple new reviews recently and I would like everyone to know that if you have an HMO, he can be reported to the Ca. Department of Managed Healthcare. If you cannot report it there because of the type of insurance you have, they are more than happy to help. I did that. Also, you can file a complaint with your insurance company. A few months ago I met with Dr Liauw because of some dibilating back pain. It was discovered I had a tumor that ate away at 75% of my L4. He did surgery and did such an excellent job. I am now currently walking 2 miles a day. The support I have received from Taylor from his office has been so amazing. He has been there from day one to answer all of my questions. I woke up on May 22, 2022 and realized I had suffered a stroke that paralyzed my entire left side of my body. I called 911 at 7:30am and was rushed to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Their by the grace of God that Dr. Liauw was on staff that morning and acted so very professionally getting me into surgery (after MRI exam) and removed my golf ball size tumor from the right side of my brain by 9am. I believe Dr. Liauw literally not only saved my life but because of his professionalism he prevented me from further paralysis. I realized after being in ICU that some stroke victims were far worse that I. I am eternally grateful that through the events that morning that Dr. Liauw just happened to be on staff. What a gift! I never do these, but this experience has to be known. I have been in the medical field for 40 yrs and I know my stuff!!! I have done everything that involves working in a medical office, from medical assisting to management. I was so looking forward to his expertise, and waited 2 months to see Dr Liauw. I heard that he was "the guy". I was brought back into the room and his PA took a brief history of my sciatica and neck condition. That took about 10-15 min. Never touched or examined me. He then brought me into Dr Liauw's office. He was sitting behind his desk. He spend 10 minutes with me and basically just went over my MRI and said he wouldn't do surgery on me at this point. (which I do not want) Also he never examined me. That was pretty much it. The icing on the cake was a complete neurological exam was documented in my chart and a 60 minute visit. . I understand that part of that is looking at my MRI, but come on. I was stunned when I read it. I called the office and was told by the PA that he understood my concerns and that it was a template that he uses and he could take it out if I would like. I told him that this is not right and that this is fraud, and that here was a full neuro exam documented which included my upper and lower body strength and my reflexes. Dr Liauw in my book is a miracle worker. He is extremely caring, confident and what he did for me proves to be an excellent surgeon. I was in horrific pain for almost six months, with a cyst on my spine.between L4-L5. He ordered a few more tests from ER, and the next day, I had my surgery. I woke up to no pain! A true miracle! My nephew recommended him to me and I couldn't be happier. Chronic pain is so depilating and he was able to set me free. I had no hardware put in, no stitches, all glue. I know I was lucky. Dr. Liauw performed disc replacement surgery in L5 S1 and I am currently 4 weeks post op. I stopped pain meds after 3 days and feel amazing. I am hiking between 3-7 miles per day and didn't realize how debilitaing the pain was until it was gone. I am sleeping better, standing straighter and walking faster. I first met Dr. Liauw last July. I was referred by Dr.Kelly Fordyce, my general doctor. Upon my examination, Dr. Fordyce did testing and thought I may have hydrocephalus. She ordered a CT scan the next day. Upon receiving the results she sent my scan to Dr, Liauw. After consulting with each other, i was referred to Dr. Liauw for a consultation. The front office was welcoming, friendly and followed all the CDC protocol to prevent the spread of covid. Dr. liauw performed testing and we discussed my symptoms. We was not convinced I had Hydrocephalus. He said my CT scan was not conclusive. Dr. Liauw referred me to Dr. Parshaw Dorriz to further investigate my condition. Additional testing was done. I felt so lucky to have both doctors caring for me. It was decided that I did have hydrocephalus and I needed to have shunt surgery. I was very confident that Dr. Liauw was the best surgeon in the area. The surgery was successful with very little discomfort. I didn't need to take any pain pills. My staples were removed after three weeks and an adjustment was made to my shunt. I saw Dr. Liauw six weeks later and he was so pleased with the outcome of my surgery. Interview more than one and listen to their plans and make an overall decision that you think is best. He didn't push me in either of my choices. I would recommend him and his office. Savior I realize that every situation that a person is in is somewhat unique, but at the end of the day a Dr has a job to do! . I can tell you that I went to eight doctors that failed me before I met with the exception....That Dr is Dr. Jason Liauw . 8 different Drs and Not a single one of them had taken the time to look deeper at my situation. They all treated me with the same protocol , one after the other medication's injections more epidurals, physical therapy more prescriptions and so on. 18 months of pain that finally boiled over. I was at my last hope. I was desperate and was on the brink of going to the emergency room a couple times but held out for my visit with Dr. Liauw. He was my ninth doctor concerning my issue and he was the only one to take a deeper look into what might be troubling me. I'm not sure if it took him 1min or 10 minutes, whatever it was, it was more than any other doctor had done. He recognized the severity and realized protocol sometimes isnt enough. Two weeks later I ended up having a multi level fusion surgery on my lumbar spine and the removal of a 1.5 cm herniation that everyone else had missed. Finally I am on the mend. I am my 83 yo mother's health advocate. living in another state that often involves listening in on appointments via speaker phone. My mom fell and smacked her head on concrete a month ago, resulting in a 4 day hospital stay with a diagnosis of a brain bleed and plaque in some of the neuro blood vessels. She was referred to Dr. Liauw for a post hospital follow up. I'm restating she is 83 years old. She doesn't drive and relies on public transit and uber for transportation. It's a big deal to get to appts. Upon arrival she was seen briefly by his assistant and then escorted into his office. I was listening on speaker. He never offered her a chair, let alone introduce himself to her or myself. His demeanor was dismissive and so unprofessional. My mom stood there while he talked at her, never asking if she had any questions or concerns. While the bleed had stopped she has significant ST memory issues. He was uninterested and unconcerned. Less than 5 minutes spent with her. Shame on you, Dr. Liauw. Do better. Show some compassion and ffs offer your elderly patient a chair. There were 2 of them. read more

I've always stayed in pretty good shape by running up to 6 miles a day and lifting weights, but after 22 yrs as a Police Officer, wearing a gun-belt and sitting in a B/W for hours at a time, the job took its toll on my lower back.  After retiring, I started having excruciating and debilitating pain in my legs and lower back.  I tried OTC meds, rest, ice, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Physical Therapy.  I saw TEN different Doctors over the course of three yrs.  I was going to stop after the 9th Doctor but luckily, I saw one more and the 10th was DR. LIAUW.  I'm glad I sought the opinion of #10. The Orthopedist that performed surgery on both my elbows and both my shoulders years earlier recommended Dr. Liauw for my back issues.  My wife accompanied me to many of my Doctor visits so I could get her opinion too, as to how we felt about each Doctor.  We were both most impressed with Dr. Liauw.  From our first meeting, he was very patient with us, taking the time to answer ALL our questions, and we had many.  Dr. Liauw explained what the MRI findings meant as well as showing us the corresponding images.  The disc between L4-L5 had significantly degenerated over time and was providing no cushion anymore to the vertebrae above and below it.  Additionally, the L4 vertebrae was slightly shifted forward, impinging the nerve that correlated to my leg pain.  Dr. Liauw went over all my options and the pros and cons of each.  I was already resigned in knowing I would need surgery to correct my lower back issues, but was not feeling confident with any of the previous nine Doctors I've seen up to that point.  After meeting Dr. Liauw, I knew he was the Doctor I wanted to perform my most serious surgery to date. I had the surgery in May 2020 and it went picture perfect.  I had a Lumbar Laminectomy with TLIF Fusion at L4-L5.  Dr. Liauw was there in the Recovery Room as I awoke.  I was still groggy, but Dr. Liauw was able to explain how well my surgery went with me.  My post-op visits went well and Dr. Liauw continued to answer all my questions.  On several occasions, I would email Dr. Liauw and he would actually respond within minutes, even late at night! After four months, I was able to do 30 pull-ups again.  Within a year, I was running 6 miles again, although my times were expectedly slower, I was just happy to be running.  I was also lifting weights again.  I knew I had to modify my physical activities for my "new normal" but I was happy to be free of the pain that sent me to all those Doctors in the first place. If I had to do it all over again, I would still seek more than one opinion, but the final opinion would be with Dr. Liauw.  I highly recommend at least including Dr. Liauw in your information gathering if you are having significant back problems like I was. Dr Liauw and his PAs Taylor and Haley were, and are, fantastic. I've had to visit several doctor's offices within the past 8 to 12 months not just for myself, but, for my wife as well. I can tell you that the concern they have shown towards me and to my wife has been amazing. They truly have gone above and beyond compared to all the other doctors. Now, specifically about Dr Liauw; I had significant pain not just in my middle lower back (L3, L4, L5 area) but, also that ran down first my right leg for a few months then switched over to my left leg. There were times when I had trouble walking. Anyway, one of the things I noticed immediately after surgery was there was no more pain in my legs. Understandably there was surgical pain in my back but, I could tell right away that he had resolved the issue in my back and my legs. I highly recommend Dr Liauw and his staff. I highly recommend Dr. Liauw and his amazing team to anyone needing major spinal surgery. I was recommended to Dr. Liauw by my own Neurologist because she had found that four disks in my spine needed to be replaced. These disks had been the source of a constant, almost crippling pain throughout my left side. Nobody could find the source, and I was beginning to think that I would have to just live that way. We called to make my appointment with Dr. Liauw that Friday and although he was booked out for weeks, he made time to see me the following Monday! From the get go, the Doctor was friendly and honest. He gave us all the information we needed, including what would happen if I had the surgery and what would happen if I just left the situation alone. Our first impression of Dr. Liauw was that he didn't "push" the surgery. He just gave us the facts and let us come to our own decision without any pressure. We found this refreshing, and after speaking again with my Neurologist, we called to book the surgery. From that point on I was treated with absolute respect from his amazing team. His Surgical Coordinator, Alyssa found an open date that fit my schedule (at the END of a calendar year) and then proceeded to get a number of approvals from our (very stubborn) Insurance Provider while we were still standing there! (We couldn't believe that!) Next, I got to work preparing myself for the procedure with the help of his two AMAZING Physician Assistants, Haley and Taylor, who answered every question I could possibly come up with in a language that I could understand and with the same honesty that we had found in Dr. Liauw. They were both there to calm any fears I still had with actual facts and also with a very human understanding that I found very refreshing and at times, my only source of comfort. Franco and Haley got me over some major hurdles in the "what if" department with patience, professionalism and at times some much needed laughter. Taylor's honesty and sense of humor went a very long way. My surgery went off without a hitch and I am eight weeks out and almost fully recovered. The almost crippling pain I had "just gotten used to" is 100% GONE! I still don't know what shape I'd be in now if it weren't for this experienced Doctor and his excellent team. Yesterday I was given the green light for Physical Therapy and I am ready to get started. I have nothing but thanks for both Dr. Liauw and his AMAZING team of assistants. My husband hurt his back while carrying our dog out of the backseat of my car in April. His first specialist diagnosed one disc having been dislocated thereby pressuring the nerve that triggered sciatica that shifted from the lower back down to his left calf and the pain was so constant and excruciating that even the highest dose of painkiller didn't help mush. And two epidurals each produced only two days of pain relief. He couldn't walk without a walker. When we went to see Dr. Liauw for the first time we learned that actually three discs, not one, had bulged. After three months of extreme suffering a simple surgery by Dr. Liauw cured him instantly. No more pain since! Meanwhile our next door neighbor who had suffered 10 years of similar back pain chose another surgeon for the same surgery because that surgeon who operates on patients 4 days a week was available much sooner than Dr. Liauw was. What a huge mistake she made because after her surgery she has continued to suffer pain daily although to a lesser degree. Please see Dr. Liauw at least for a second opinion even if you have already chosen another surgeon!
