They also have a large beer and wine selection behind the Banter stall where you can choose any six-pack or bottle you want and drink it inside or take it home. Inside the I love On The Rise Bakery and Rising Star Coffee inside the Market Hall. They also have Craft Collective which serves lots of craft beers and wines by the glass. There's lots of seating and tables to enjoy your meal, work, meet with friends, etc. One of my favorite spots in the VAD is The Corner. It's a small section in the Market Hall that sells little treats, jeweler, candles, etc. from local makers and small business owners. It's always fun to see what they have there and good to support these businesses.

We visited The Van Aiken District for the third time, although we haven't visited in a few years…read more The area is similar to many outside shopping area, but also has a small inside market area. We had a great time strolling around inside and out. The district has a nice selection of stores. There is everything from a plant store (Stump) to ice cream (Mitchell's), to clothing stores (Clevelan Clothing Company and others). There is definitely a focus on more local goods and shops. The area is not expansive so it is easy to stroll around and see everything in a short period of time. Had it been warmer I would have liked to sit outside with a coffee.

Legends never die; well, at least they're not forgotten. In the battle of Randall Park Mall versus…read moreSouthgate, the original still stands. I would wager, dear reader, that you didn't know Southgate Shopping Center was one of the first large shopping centers in the USA? Neither did I until I visited my home state recently and did a nostalgia tour after a 20-year absence. Dedicated in 1955, Southgate opened with 44 stores. At its peak, in the mid-1990s, back when I cruised the parking lots on my bmx, it had 150 stores. It faced competition from Randall Park Mall; but that giant fell in 2008 and today well.... Today, Southgate stands as a monument of the old times growing up in Cleveland. I remember riding bikes up to Kmart with Joe and buying food when Kmart still had cafeterias. I had my groundbreaking event of seeing my first movie alone in the theater at Southgate (Transformers!). Putt Putt? Nuff said. Who could forget staring into video game cases in hopes of someday acquiring a Neo Geo at Toys r Us? Perhaps the most interesting thing to me about Southgate back in the day (second only to the amazing curb jump in the back) was the pet store, Petland. Somehow Petland had exotic fish and animals that seemed so interesting to Midwest children; the saltwater tanks seemed only unfathomable dreams back then. Anyway, before I get too nostalgic and further date myself, I will say that I'm surprised there is still some life at Southgate. I had forgotten about Mr. Hero until I drove by it. I almost went in for those wafer fries. There's dilapidated stores, like old wounds, festering around Southgate, unfilled. Like all old things, however, there must be an end and a new beginning. Not sure what is in store for Southgate Shopping Center (pun!), but I thought it deserved a review from a former resident of the glorious north coast.

just as i thought about the steelyard commons adventure, i shall say this…read more. What the... but what i should be saying "where the..." where the heck did these come from?? i swear yesterday these weren't here. steelyard commons didn't get all the stars yet from me because chic-fil-a and yes, the big mart of walls that most of us don't admit we shop at but we do don't exist there yet. they are still just glimmers in mom and dad's eyes. if by mom and dad i mean city planners, architects, and investors, ok. well, marts of walls is actually a fetus now, but i digress. give it a few months and it will be the mecca of all that is good for those of us living in the city vicinity. it's already doing pretty darn good, though i just don't understand why i never see that many people there. weird? that's the part that creeps me out. huge ass stores with no one in them, no one in the parking lots, and just space everywhere. it's kinda creepy. like a comet exploded and hit the earth and i didn't know it. instead i'm just shopping like a little happy girl in target buying god knows what because if it's in target, i must need it. where steelyard will be in about a year is city view. yes, it a bit farther away from cleveland, but still easily accessible, city view offers a heck of a lot. mart of walls. chipotle qdoba bed bath and beyond dicks sporting goods giant eagle petsmart a crap load of random stores including cell phone stores, hair places, you know, random stuff. there's a lot of stuff here. and it's good stuff. to city view i say "thank you, i didn't know i needed that much random shit from bed, bath, and beyond" and to steelyard commons i say "why are you so empty? stop it. you're creeping me out. and if i should be in a fall out shelter, someone please tell me." both, i think are pretty good places. one's just the older sister to the fetus, one's just being born. ah, feti. i just made that up. feti. use it at least once today. recycling areas that needed it? ok. good job, clevo. as long as you're not taking out landscape that animals need and instead recycling old developed areas that needed a revamp, i say much kudos. so to all of this development that apparently is happenning right below my nose and i don't even know it until one day it's there, kudos to you. EDIT: my friend tells me they built this over a toxic waste dump. is this true????? wow. if it is. holy crap on toast. is that why my feet are glowing??
